Mr. Lupo, please... Let us improve your blocks!
5
6
It is an educational game-based tool that provides user and teachers mechanisms and dynamic fit for playful learning.
Starting on architecture and the traditional game of building blocks, Lupo extends its didactics transversally towards mathematics, drawing, physics, art, history, music or design. The Lupo experience allows the participant to deepen certain technical, intellectual, visual (2D or 3D) or motor skills, but fundamentally seeks to develop the creative and social skills through group dynamics by virtue of the size and characteristics of the challenges.
New applications emerge from each collaboration and that experience progressively enriches the project. Currently Lupo has a dossier of more than 300 challenges adapted to different ages, circumstances and requirements. In the last years our systems have been applied in many educational and artistic centers either in the form of specific workshops or through an autonomous use by the heads of didactics of each center.
Lupo is an open project in continuous development that works through its own patents and grows with alliances with companies, agencies and educational or cultural centers.
7
8
Learning through play is the slogan that guides our project.
Lupo is an educational tool that cooperatively develops logical and creative thinking with hundreds of challenges and levels of difficulty and suitable for all ages (3-99 years). From our own experience first as students and then as teachers we have stumbled upon a series of gaps in educational systems very closely linked to the ever difficult relationship between theory and practice.
Our projects in this field have allowed us to share experiences with professionals from different fields, all promoters of “Learning by doing. Within this concept we include not only manual skills, but also social skills. Hence the idea of creating a cooperative toy as an instrument of social cohesion has emerged.
From our doctoral theses we have tried to approach this reality and it would be with the beginning of the teaching practice and our paternity when the interest has become more pronounced.
9
10
It is a modular system based on 7 basic proportional pieces.
Sistema Lupo is a constructive system of didactic purposes based on a set of seven pieces proportional to each other that allow infinity of rigging. Depending on the material and the scale it can be adapted to the work in groups and large scale, domestic sizes and individual playing, also it can be material or virtual experimentation when the digital software is used.
11
LOW TECHNOLOGY
THE DEFEAT
THE MANUAL
Gaming power derives from the simplicity of equipment. The system admits different degrees of difficulty and possibilities with the use of only 7 types of pieces with elementary unions.
Collapses often appear in workshops and are lived within a normality that should help us rise again. Failure is always partial and is included in the process of doing.
The work with a supporting manual is a constant in the Lupo System. The contents developed in it are the key to assess the educational strength of the toy.
REPETITION AND VARIANTS
SELF-OVERCOMING
CHILD EMPOWERMENT
The modular design and the existence of straight and curved pieces favor the possibility of multiple combinatorial. The game is, as a result, infinite, both for the construction of proposed challenges and for the development of creativity exercises.
The competitive nature of a group dynamic must always be channeled in favor of personal or group self-improvement. Losing or failing in the attempt should not be experienced as a drama and helps to train management frustration.
The workshops often favor the visibility of the child’s work. An empowering effect that helps to produce a very positive assessment of the work.
12
The concepts that guide the Lupo System project.
EPHEMERAL NATURE
PARTICIPATION
ACTIVE DIDACTICS
Every Lupo workshop contains the phases of assembly and disassembly that are summarized in the idea of the box as start and end. The ephemeral nature of the constructions reinforces the value of the process and tries to relativize the importance of the result.
The didactics is centered in valuing the participation of the individual in the group. It is a difficult relation that includes the participation, the discussion, the creativity and the resilience consequence of the failure of the demolition and its reconstruction.
Lupo is thinking and doing, is thinking with your hands. It is an active pedagogical experience based on the constructive and mental act, in the connection between theory and practice.
CREATIVITY
INDIVIDUALITY WITHIN THE GROUP
EDUCATIONAL COMPLEMENT
Sessions open an even playing field with rules, but with no clear end, which is the key to a creative workshop. Start with a theoretical approach, it passes through a guided activity and lead to creative phase, not always in that order.
The Lupo experience favors the individual or small group approach in the group work phase. The exchange of ideas between participants is essential before facing the big construction.
Sistema Lupo focuses on complementing educators and providing experiences that naturally fit into the objectives of the curriculum.
13
14
Diverse team of professionals from different specialties.
The team that forms Sistema Lupo is heterogeneous, has professionals from very different branches such as architecture, music, photography, painting, history, robotics, computer science, psychology, literature ... with extensive teaching experience and is always open to new collaborations.

The Lupo System team assiduously participates in conferences, congress and meetings to disseminate and share experiences in the academic environment.
Participation and collaboration in meetings, congresses, workshops or conferences, organized around the relationship between architecture and education, allow us to share experiences in the vanguard of this field.
Lectures and presence in doctoral thesis courts. Throughout these years, the Sistema Lupo team has given numerous lectures in Universities, Museums and other Institutions. They have also participated as members of doctoral theses courts.
We also consider important the academic and divulgative development to produce collective knowledge. For this reason, we not only document our work on our website, but also produce academic articles and documents that go deeper into the theoretical field. Likewise, we collaborate with academic or cultural institutions, obtaining benefits and reciprocal knowledge.

The cards or challenges are complements of theory on each topic.
They have an open and flexible nature so that the teaching objectives can vary even using the same base sheet for the class or workshop. For example the pyramid may be part of the history class of Egypt or Mesoamerican civilizations, it can be a workshop of visual memory or a geometric challenge. Obviously it can also be understood as a purely playful activity with no teaching load.

Lupo Tools
For the development of activities we rely on drawing, visits or group discussion but above all we come to the action through our own tools, some are experimental and of specific application in workshops or particular courses. Others however evolve in the form of products whose sale helps to maintain the Lupo project in a sustainable and independent way. All our products are endorsed by the AIJU laboratories specialized in the toy industry and have the relevant CE labeling. They have been manufactured in the Iberian Peninsula and although industrialized, in all of them there is still an artisan touch. This craft concept is more evident in some than in others, but common to all of them.
25
26
MANUFACTURING PROCESSES We encourage schools to create their own lupos and enrich us with their new versions. All of them will share didactics and challenges, it is an umbrella under which the whole experience is sheltered.
Continuous experimentation is a fundamental part of the process, for this reason we introduce the participant in the creation and manufacture of the different blocks. We seek to change the material, processes, techniques, scales ..., which leads us to adapt the connectors, the vertices, work with the tolerances ... In this way, the different scenarios occur, we learn from materials and from the philosophy that is under each technique.
27
SUPER LUPO Super Lupo is a construction toy specially designed for the large scale. The material of which it is composed is the expanded polystyrene. Material characterized by its high insulation capacity, its lightness and innocuous character that make it a suitable material for the construction of large complex structures. It is perfect for the work with groups.
28
ECO LUPO / LUPO BLOCK EcoLupo is an artisan product both in the way of using the raw material and in the execution itself. Lupo relies on national industry and local crafts. From Sistema Lupo we believe in the strength of entrepreneurship. Lupo Block is the essential series of Lupo System, manufactured in a handmade mode in untreated chestnut wood. Its pieces constitute the lupo geometry in its pure state, without anchors or joints, its rigging is performed by gravity or fit according to the geometries used.
29
ECO LUPO 3 Basic + PLAYING CARDS It is the basic version of EcoLupo 3. In this case the toy is presented in a basic kit and without playing cards. A new version of the cards is available in a new independent format, which allows you to play with the possibilities of EcoLupo 3 and also adds some possibilities of numerical play.
30
ECO LUPO 3 As in previous cases of EcoLupo, it is a craftsman’s material, sustainable and with high quality control. In this case with pieces of 3 cm. sideways. For the first time playing cards that complement the free play are incorporated. In EcoLupo 3 you can combine 3 elements in each exercise, wood pieces, a challenge card and a difficulty card.
31
LUPO PLOT The pieces are made of PLA, a bio plastic of natural origin. The box is generated by the parts themselves so that no packaging is required. The parts are manufactured by an additive printing process that does not generate waste with a RepRap printer.
32
LUPO DIGITAL It is the immaterial version of SISTEMA LUPO. The abstraction implied by lack of scale drives the LUPO DIGITAL project. An R & D project carried out in collaboration with MODELICAL, a company specialized in the creation and development of multimedia projects based on new technologies.
33
TIMBER LUPO Made for a specific workshop, Yin yang project is based on the knowledge of wood as a building material. The workshop is conducted in collaboration with Ie University and the American Hardwood Export Council for Hay Festival 2012. The wood used is American Tulipwood.
34
LUPO LASER You can find the manufacturing instructions on the Sistema Lupo website. sistemalupo.ferminblanco.com/ productos-2/lupo-laser/
This version of LUPO is the first in a series dedicated to the digital manufacture and licensed creative commons. It is realized in collaboration with the Laboratory of Digital Manufacture of the School of Architecture of IE University. In this case acoustic insulation foam and a laser cutter are used as a manufacturing tool.

We believe in the pestalozzian ideal of working on the blackboard, erasing to continue advancing without giving more importance than that due to what has already been done. For this reason the end of a workshop is always the same, the box collected waiting for a new workshop. This final image tells of our confidence in the process, breaking the preconceived idea of “the work of art” as an objective. The collaborative work denies the individual ownership of the work done. The challenge is reached between all and all we participate in its success (or failure, in case of structural collapse). The individual work is collected in the workbooks where the information and the

From the traditional ones that involve the manual skills to the digital applications with software adapted to the lupo system. Some workshops are conducted on specific topics that respond to orders received, others more generic that serve as a thread or cover gaps that we consider important. workshops in schools, universities, museums, cultural centers ... All of them made in collaboration with specialists from different fields thanks to whom the Lupo project continues to grow and we hope to continue doing so with your help. We hope you enjoy this selection of proposals!

SUBMERGED CITIES Aquarium Finisterrae, A CoruĂąa January 2016 Within the cycle Nenoarquitectura of the Foundation Luis Seoane with the collaboration of the delegation of A CoruĂąa of the Official College of Architects of Galicia.
It takes advantage of the spectacular environment created in the aquarium to involve participants in the fascinating underwater world. A first theoretical session led us to explore into different examples of underwater towns and cities, due to strategic decisions, natural disasters or legends. A creative workshop where each team creates an imagined city adapted to the environments recreated in the aquarium arises.

ARCHITECTURAL SCULPTURE Valladolid, 21.09.2014 Participatory teaching activities in collaboration with PREDIF. It is aimed at all audiences, and is developed in the context of the program MUSEO 2014 within the program Art and Culture for all. Coordinated by MUDA Architecture in collaboration with the National Museum of Sculpture program aims to visualize the content and museum activities through urban actions to open up the possibility for public participation.
50
The workshop aims to bring the participants closer to the world of architecture, sculpture and their relationships. After a tour of the building, watching the wide variety of arches, some architectural and other fruit of architectural sculpture, we focus on the construction of the challenges in this case through family workshops involving people of different ages and with different capabilities within the logic of integration that drives the project.
LUPO + LOS CARPINTEROS Laboral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial, Gijón 2010 Didactic activity to support the exhibition Pasajes. Trips through the hyper-space, ThyssenBornemisza Art Contemporary Collection. Collaboration with the association of elders El Llano, who will be in charge of the workshop.
The exhibition highlights the work of LOS CARPINTEROS “Frio Estudio del Desastre”, which invites the viewer to participate in a moment frozen in time. The didactic workshop will try to recreate this feeling and try to explain two fundamental concepts present in the work: - The vulnerability of architectural structures through the study of the wall. - The space-time relationship in the artistic installation.

ARQUI BRINCA Porto 2013-2014 Braga 2014 Arqui Brinca is a workshop held within the “Week of Urban Rehabilitation of Porto and Braga”. Companies, technicians, institutions and general public gather around discussion sessions, work and exhibition.
Arquibrinca is presented as a final party where the little ones are the protagonists. To put in value the patrimonial parts of the city different challenges are proposed based on monuments or significant parts of the city (they have been developed in Braga and Porto). In 2014 we have the collaboration of the collective Arkiplay, with whom we have realized a specific activity “CUBO PORTO”, an abstract figure based on the threedimensional collage of different buildings of the city.

Lupo at the School. They are extracurricular workshops organized in sessions of 90 minutes where the participants deal with issues related to architecture and its side effects in the arts, history or science. In this way other disciplines that are being treated in the classroom are brought together and adapted to the academic curriculum. It is a project-based model, supplemented by flexible programming, full of challenges and documentation easily appropriated by the teacher.
58
Sistema Lupo also is adapted to primary schools and early childhood education with continuous training programs.
Re-thinking the school. It is an integral and experimental educational project focused on the collaborative work and that favors the spirit of community within the school and with its surroundings. It is developed jointly with the cloister, parents and students. Currently and since 2014 it has been developed in the CEIP Ortigueira in Santa Cruz de Ribadulla. Under the motto “architecture also educates the activities try to raise awareness about the importance of the immediate environment and everyday spaces.
For this, activities guided by the faculty of teachers are projected ensuring pedagogical coherence. In the three years to date, students have been able to learn more about geometry and mathematics while emulating Matta Clark or building their own natural spaces in the yard. They have shaped a new acoustic ceiling for the dining room. Or they have participated in the design of the new toilet for infantile education, a space adapted to its use and form that they now feel as their own.

Tro-pieza.
It is born linked to the figure and thought of the artist Luis Seoane, characterized by a discourse in favor of the integration of the arts, didactics is therefore permeable to any artistic or creative manifestation.
Introductory course for children’s education (4 to 5 years). It is an experimental program where the child makes an approach to architecture, forms and spaces through the game of blocks. In these first steps the methodology is based on narrated stories, music and magic introducing the participants in a playful and educational experience.
Nenoarquitectura has three groups differentiated according to age. On one hand, Em-pieza is aimed at children between 6 and 9 years old, on the other, Des-Pieza is aimed at children between 10 and 12 years and the last Tro-pieza, for children between 4 and 5 years.
62
Creative and guided constructions through plans facilitate an approach to a didactic that tends to be complicated through the En-pieza and Des-pieza programs.
NENOARQUITECTURA Is a one-year course in museums where architecture merges with other disciplines and dialogues with the exhibitions and activities of the center.
Em-pieza.
Des-pieza.
Aimed at children from 6 to 9 years old, it is organized in thematic groups that evolve in difficulty throughout the course.
Aimed at children aged 10 to 12 years, it emerges as a requirement of children who fulfilled their way through Nenoarquitectura and want to maintain their presence in the workshops.
We work with the lupo material in its different scales and materials and generate a workbook where we collect the daily work. Teamwork is an essential part of the workshop through lupo challenges that close each session. These workshops deal with general themes such as scale, material, proportions, color, composition ... not only applicable to architecture, but also to art or design.
In this block we introduce the world of design with more energy giving even more freedom to the child in its design process and project, even giving them the tools to create new challenges. The use of the specific software is introduced through LUPO VIRTUAL so that we can include more activities related to 3D vision.

MIES es + Contemporary architecture experimental workshop
In collaboration with the Galician Center for Contemporary Art -CGAC-, we propose a series of architecture workshops aimed at children. The aim is to provide children with the keys necessary to interpret contemporary architecture through the legacy of the most relevant figures of our time in this field. The architects David Antuña and Víctor González and the artist Rebeca Mariño introduce the participants in the exciting world of contemporary architecture. Each workshop is dedicated to a representative of different generations of architects from the avant-garde to the present and is developed according to the philosophy of each creator.

The game is fundamental during all the sessions. The Lupo System didactics is used both in terms of material and content. It is an experimental didactic that encourages individual reflection and creativity as well as teamwork through large-scale construction dynamics. The methodology includes a theoretical part, where one approaches to the figure and the thought of each architect, and later a series of constructive challenges are posed.
