MORNING MEETING & SHOUT-OUTS

Sitar students gather each morning before attending classes. Morning meetings are an opportunity for students to prepare for their day through short exercises, giving shout outs and receiving announcements. All students should be present for Morning Meeting. Shout-outs are given to students who are exhibiting the Student Values. Students and teachers can give and receive shout-outs.

CAMP ORIENTATION

Camp Sitar will hold Camp Orientation for students and families! New and current families are encouraged to attend.

• Learn about the camp day, field trips, activities, and art classes

• Meet camp staff and teachers

• Ask questions

Orientation dates will be sent via email. Orientations will be held in English and Spanish. For more information about orientation, please email camp@sitarartscenter.org.

Safety Protocols

Below are some of the steps we are taking to create a safe learning environment this summer:

• Requiring COVID 19 Vaccination for all students, faculty and staff*

• Masking is optional for students, faculty and staff

Health Protocols

There is not a nurse on staff. Sitar staff are certified to administer medication and First Aid/CPR during camp hours.

All students attending Camp Sitar will be required to submit a COVID 19 VACCINATION VERIFICATION and VALID DC HEALTH & IMMUNIZATION FORM by no later than May 26th.

• Consuming lunch in their respective classrooms.

• Cleaning and disinfecting classrooms and hightraffic areas throughout and at the end of each day.

Sitar Arts Center will continue to monitor guidelines and safety protocol as mandated by the District of Columbia. In the event that in-person programming can no longer continue safely or is required to halt due to changes in guidelines/protocol, Sitar Arts Center will contact families to discuss alternatives which include virtual programming and/or providing credits or tuition refunds.

* This summer we will accept valid District of Columbia Department of Health- Religious Immunization Exemption Certificates for the COVID 19 vaccine. Students with exemptions will be required to wear a mask indoors at Sitar at all times, other than when eating or drinking.

Camp Sitar

Camp Sitar will enable students to focus deeply on their chosen disciplines each session. There are four different periods of class time throughout the day, where students will explore techniques within their chosen art class. Additionally, teachers will add literacy and other activities integrated into the arts discipline to add variety and keep their class engaged and excited to be at Camp Sitar!

Meals

Our meal program is sponsored by DC Free Summer Meals Program via DC Central Kitchen. Families must sign up during registration to receive breakfast and/or lunch. If you do not wish to receive meals, you may send your student(s) with a packed lunch. Certain items are not permitted due to allergies and Camp Sitar’s healthy food policy . Those items are listed below. Menus for the free meals will be provided during camp.

BREAKFAST

Served from 8:30 am - 8:50 am each morning.

LUNCH

Served from 12:00 - 12:30 pm. Lunch is 30 minutes.

All students must bring a reusable water bottle each day to camp. Please be sure to label ALL lunch boxes, containers and water bottles with your student’s name.

NOTE: Sitar Arts Center and its partnering organizations are not responsible for lost or damaged items or storing personal food items.

LUNCH RULES

• All food allergies must be reported at registration

• Candy, gum, soda, fast food, any nut products are NOT allowed

• Label any containers, including lunch box and water bottle

• Students will not be able to heat food

• Students cannot pick up food from an outside vendor or send siblings, staff or interns to pick up food

CAMP ACTIVITIES

FIELD TRIPS & CAMP ACTIVITIES

Camp Sitar always has great trips and community activities, as well as activities to build Camp spirit.

We will continue with most of our traditional days including, Water Day, Field Day, Smore’s as well as a few other special activities to engage students in our camp activities and field trips.

Camp Sitar also has Wacky Wednesdays and Spirit Week when students can get creative with silly hats, celebrate their cultural heritage, or show off their team spirit. Students will receive a calendar of these wonderful activities after registration!

SUMMER SHOWCASES

KIDS CRAFTERS & YOUNG EXPRESSIONISTS

At the end of each week-long session, students will have the opportunity to exhibit or perform what they have learned each Friday afternoon during our Open House. Parents are invited to come to the Open House each Friday starting at 3:30pm, to see what their student(s) were up to at Camp Sitar that week!

Additionally, at the end of the summer, we will hang artwork from throughout the six weeks in our gallery. This exhibit will stay up through October, and we welcome all to stop in and see the amazing art produced throughout the summer!

*There will be a scheduled/rotated 10-minute bathroom break before and after the activity breaks for restroom use, and handwashing. Outdoor activities are weather permitting.

KID CRAFTERS CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

ADVENTURES IN MUSIC — Crafter musicians will experience many different instruments from drums to keyboards to guitar and learn to work together as a team and may form a band!

ART EXPLORATIONS — Our young artists will explore the world of creating, using a variety of materials. Students will cut, glue, build, sprinkle, construct, experiment and design new projects each session.

STUDIO ART — In studio art, artists will learn about 2-D and 3-D art styles, from painting with acrylic and watercolor to recycled and found art and pottery.

PLAYACTING — All the World’s A Stage! Kids Crafters will discover theater arts through play, learning theater games, creating short skits, acting out lines, and having fun with characters!

SPORTS & REC Let’s learn through movement and have fun too! Students will participate in outdoor and indoor activities that encourage play and fun through physical activity through activities such as sports, dance, and movement games.

ARTS WITH PURPOSE: LEADERSHIP AND COMMUNITY BUILDING THROUGH THE ARTS — This class will build teamwork and social emotional learning skills using art and project building skills based on ideas from the students to empower and beautify their communities and neighborhoods.

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY — Students will learn the art of visual composition and get a sense of what it means to have an “eye” for an image. Students will work in playful mediums and subjects to explore the art of photography.

MUSICAL THEATER — Students will learn vocal technique, choreography, character development and stage performance.

DANCE — Students will experiment with and learn dance styles such as modern, ballet, jazz, cultural and hip hop. Students will learn what choreography is and participate in choreographing their own pieces and learn how to work as a group towards a performance.

Session 1 – Space Explorer

Adventure through space and learn about our magical solar system, stars, and galaxies! Who said you can’t touch the sky?

Session 2 – Under the Sea

Dive into the ocean with your super submarine to meet the creatures we never get to see; giant squids, leafy sea dragons and sharks that glow in the dark!

Session 3 – Animals Around the World

Lions and tigers and bears, oh my! Discover animals from all over the world.

Session 4 – Hollywood Time Travel

Take a trip through time and learn about some of the most influential superstars. Have a look at how your favorite stars came to be and the impact they made for us in the ARTS!

Session 5 – Recycling

The world needs help! Stop pollution and save energy by recycling and cutting waste.

Session 6 – Heroes

All heroes don’t wear capes. What kind of hero are you? Select your superpower and start to change the world!

Young Expressionists offers full day options from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm. Students will select a morning and afternoon class and will transition individually between classes, based on their schedule. If students are enrolled in multiple sessions, they will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of experiences. Students in Young Expressionists experience art classes on a deeper level.

YOUNG EXPRESSIONISTS CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY — In Digital Photography, students will deepen their understanding of visual composition and photo editing by learning and practicing the impressionistic and surreal side of photography. They will work together to experiment with exposures, composition, and visual effects to convey narration and emotion in creative ways.

STUDIO ART Students in studio art will explore a variety of 2-D and 3-D arts styles, from painting with acrylic and watercolor, to recycled and found art, and pottery. Students will learn foundational concepts, be introduced to various types of equipment, such as the kiln for firing pottery, and will learn the steps needed to complete a successful piece of work.

MUSIC — Expressionists students will be introduced to various instruments, such as drums, keyboard, conga, and guitar. As a group in band style, they will learn about song writing, musicians, current and previously made music and how to perform these pieces or create their own.

SPORTS & REC Add a bit of play and movement into your day with some physical fitness and active games. Students will be engaged in activities such as sports, dance, and movement games.

ARTS WITH PURPOSE — Leadership and Community Building Through the Arts - This class creates projects led by students that encourage leadership, community building and teamwork. Together through the arts they will create class projects that will beautify and uplift their communities.

MUSICAL THEATER — Students will learn vocal technique, choreography, character development and stage performance.

Session 1 – Out of This World

What’s up there? Join us as we navigate the expansive universe by learning about space travel, the planetary systems and how we gather information about the galaxy and beyond.

Session 2 –Beneath the Waves

The ocean seems so dark and cold but it’s home to many of the world’s most mysterious creatures. Discover what hides beneath the waves, apart from what your eyes can see.

Session 3 – All Around the Globe

Navigate the world and all its cultures. One of the best ways to learn about another culture is through art and expression. We will learn about traditions from around the world and see life from another point of view.

Session 4 – Living Legends

The “stars” on earth live in their own world. Dive into the history and lifestyles of today’s most popular celebrities and how they have impacted the world.

Session 5 – My Community’s Keeper

Let’s do our part in keeping our community safe and clean. Reduce, reuse, and recycle to help combat pollution and start right here in our own backyards.

Session 6 – Peacekeepers

Explore different ways to spread peace, love, and positivity in our community through the arts!

DAILY SCHEDULE

Aftercare is limited and available on a first come first serve basis. Families may sign up for aftercare when they reserve their camp spaces. An additional fee will apply and is based on a sliding fee scale.

Students in aftercare have free play in addition to arts and crafts activities, outside play, sports and other active games, indoor play and literacy time.

• Students registered for aftercare will be directed to the aftercare location after their summer program ends each day

• Parents are required to sign out their student from aftercare each day

• Students are given a snack each day

• There is a grace period of 15 minutes at pick up time. After 6:15, parents must pay $1.00 per minute, equal to their late time, to the staff upon arrival

• Non-registered friends or family members may not attend aftercare

HOW TO APPLY

All interested applicants MUST sign up with DC’s Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP), by their deadline, in order to get paid for work. For payment through SYEP, youth must be a DC resident. Interns can also work for a small stipend (limited availability), community service or as a volunteer.

Additionally all applicants must complete a S.E.A.L. internship application by March 10, 2023, interview with a Sitar staff member, and provide other required materials to be considered.

SUMMER S.E.A.L PROGRAM

Students can earn money or community service hours by working at Sitar Arts Center.

Applicants must be 14 or older (dependent upon position) and commit to working during the entire program.

INTERNSHIPS ARE AVAILABLE IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS

Mural Arts Intern: Hybrid

Work as part of a team in the creation of 1– 2 murals and individually on an independent project. Projects will be completed through both in-person and remote work sessions. Must provide a portfolio of recent drawings/paintings to be considered.

Camp Assistant Intern: In-Person

Primarily assists Camp Sitar as a teaching assistant in the classroom, supervising and supporting students in grades K-8. The intern will play an important role in daily functions and will work closely with both the teaching artists and students.

Musical Theater Intern: In-Person

Working alongside the musical theater teacher, interns will coach and mentor young performing artists in grades K - 8 through a performance-based musical theater curriculum. Interns will also support students in their final performance that will take place at the end of each week.

Intern Leadership Opportunities

Interns who have worked at Sitar more than two summers are eligible for additional hourly pay. Those selected will be given a bigger leadership role and more responsibility. Not all who are eligible will be selected.

HOW TO APPLY

All interested applicants MUST complete an application which can be found on the Sitar website.

Applicants must be rising seniors attending a public or public charter high school.

Applications are due March 10, 2023.

In addition to the application, you will be required to interview with a Sitar staff member, and may need to provide other required materials to be considered.

BLOOMBERG ARTS PROGRAM

Rising high school seniors complete well paid summer internships at local arts and culture organizations three days a week and participate in workforce development and college readiness training two days a week.

Interns earn $19 an hour and may work up to 40 hours a week.

As a part of the BAI program, interns go on college visits, attend cultural field trips, and participate in creative and professional development workshops.

Bloomberg Arts Interns work on various assignments, including but not limited to:

• Reviewing and posting on social media

• Prepping for gallery openings and events

• Teaching children and youth in the arts

• Supporting film production and planning

The Bloomberg Arts Internship is 7 weeks long and participants must be able to attend the entirety of the program.

REGISTRATION & PAYMENT

Space is limited in Camp Sitar. It is Sitar’s mission that 80% of our families come from households whose income falls below 60% of the median area income. All families must provide household income information and reservations will be limited based on that verification.

Additionally, all families must make a deposit in order to reserve a space for either in-person or online camp. Deposits will be on a sliding fee scale and the deposit will be approximately 30% of the total tuition cost. This will reserve the student’s space until the tuition deadline. Deposits are nonrefundable or transferrable.

RESERVATION STEPS FOR IN-PERSON CAMP

1. CALL TO RESERVE A SPACE

Families may call beginning at 10:00 am to reserve camp spaces. DO NOT LEAVE VOICEMAILS, CALL UNTIL YOU REACH A STAFF MEMBER. Sitar staff will not be able to return your call during this time. Spaces are available on a first come first serve basis. During your call you will select the program and sessions for each student you are registering.

2. PAY YOUR DEPOSIT AND TURN IN YOUR TAX FORMS

Deposits and tax forms are due within 24 hours of the in-person program reservation. The deposit secures your students space until tuition and registration forms are received. If the deposit and/or tax forms are not received, the student will lose their space in the program. Deposits are nonrefundable and cannot be transferred to another student or program. The deposit will be 30% of your total tuition cost.

3. COMPLETE YOUR REGISTRATION LINK

Due dates are based on when you reserved your space. All registration paperwork will be sent by email. All registration forms are due by the listed due date for final confirmation of the student’s space. The registration link contains: medical information forms, field trip permissions, student waivers and t-shirt selection. Students cannot attend camp without these completed forms. Students registering for camp MUST SUBMIT a VALID DC HEALTH & IMMUNIZATION Form and COVID 19 VACCINATION VERIFICATION by no later than May 26th. Additional medical paperwork may be required.

4. PAY YOUR FULL TUITION

Due dates are based on when you reserved your space.

5. SUBMIT CLASS PREFERENCES

Class preference forms will be sent via email after tuition is paid, and registration forms are completed. On the form, you will be able to select class preferences for your student for each registered session.

6. ATTEND CAMP ORIENTATION!

Camp Sitar will hold a Camp Orientation for students and families to learn about the camp day, meet camp staff and ask questions. T-shirts will be given out to each student on the first day of camp. Families will also learn about important health and safety protocols that all students must know before they can attend the first day of Camp!

PASOS DE INSCRIPCIÓN PARA CAMP SITAR

1. LLAMAR PARA RESERVAR SU ESPACIO

Las familias pueden llamar a partir de las 10:00 am para reservar espacios en el campamento. NO DEJE MENSAJES DE VOZ, LLAME HASTA LLEGAR A UN MIEMBRO DEL PERSONAL. El personal de Sitar no podrá devolverle la llamada durante este tiempo. Los espacios están disponibles por orden de llegada. Durante su llamada, seleccionará el programa y las sesiones para cada estudiante que se inscribe.

2. PAGUE SU DEPÓSITO Y ENTREGUE SUS FORMAS DE IMPUESTOS

Se deben entregar los depósitos y los formularios de impuestos dentro de las 24 horas posteriores al reservar su espacio. El depósito asegura el espacio de sus estudiantes hasta que se reciban los formularios de matrícula e inscripción. Si no se entregan los formularios de depósito y/o impuestos, el estudiante perderá su espacio en el programa. Los depósitos no son reembolsables y no se pueden transferir a otro estudiante o programa. El depósito será 30% del costo total de la matrícula.

3. COMPLETAR SU ENLACE DE INSCRIPCIÓN

Las fechas de vencimiento se basan en cuándo reservó su espacio. Toda la documentación de inscripción se enviará por correo electrónico. Se deben entregar todos los formularios de inscripción antes de la fecha de vencimiento indicada para hacer la confirmación final del espacio. El enlace de inscripción contiene: formularios de información médica, permisos para excursiones, exenciones para estudiantes y selecciones de camisetas. Los estudiantes no pueden asistir al campamento sin estos formularios completados. Deben enviar un formulario VÁLIDO DE SALUD E INMUNIZACIÓN DE DC y VERIFICACIÓN DE VACUNAS PARA COVID-19 antes del 26 de mayo para cada estudiante inscrito en el campamento. Es posible que se requiera documentación médica adicional.

5. ENVIAR PREFERENCIAS DE CLASE

6. ¡ASISTIR A LA ORIENTACIÓN DEL CAMPAMENTO!

Camp Sitar llevará a cabo una orientación de campamento para que los estudiantes y las familias aprendan sobre el día del campamento, conozcan al personal del campamento y hagan preguntas. Se entregarán camisetas a cada estudiante el primer día de campamento. ¡Las familias también aprenderán sobre los protocolos importantes de salud y seguridad que todos los estudiantes deben conocer antes de asistir a su primer día del campamento!

DETALLES DEL PROGRAMA

El programa de Kid Crafters ofrece opciones de día completo de 9:00 am a 4:00 pm. Los estudiantes seleccionarán un curso de arte para cada sesión inscrita. Si están inscritos en varias sesiones, tendrán la oportunidad de participar en una variedad de experiencias. Cada mañana y tarde, los estudiantes tendrán un descanso entre horas de clase y participarán en juegos al exterior (si el clima lo permite) o en una actividad especial. Los cursos artísticos ofrecidos variarán entre Exploraciones de Arte, Teatro, Baile, Recreación y Deportes, Artes Visuales, Arte Comunitaria, Aventuras Musicales, Fotografía Digital y Teatro Musical.

YOUNG EXPRESSIONISTS

El programa de Young Expressionists ofrece opciones de día completo de 9:00 am a 4:00 pm. Los estudiantes seleccionarán una clase de arte mañanera y una para la tarde para cada sesión inscrita. Los estudiantes tendrán la oportunidad de participar en una variedad de experiencias, si están inscritos en varias sesiones. Tendrán la oportunidad de aprender diferentes medios de arte en un nivel más profundo. Los cursos de arte ofrecidos variarán entre Artes Visuales, Arte Comunitaria, Recreación y Deportes, Música, Fotografía Digital y Teatro Musical.

CUIDADO POSTERIOR

El cuidado posterior es limitado y está disponible por orden de llegada. Las familias pueden inscribirse para el cuidado posterior cuando reserven sus espacios de campamento. Se aplicará una tarifa adicional basada en una escala. Los estudiantes en cuidado posterior tienen tiempo libre, además de actividades de artes, juego al exterior, deportes, juegos en el centro y horas de lectura. Los estudiantes inscritos para el cuidado posterior irán a áreas específicas después de terminar sus clases del día.

SITAR EMERGING ARTS LEADERS INTERSHIP PROGRAM (EDADES 14-24)

¡Estudiantes de 14 – 24 años pueden solicitar para trabajar en Sitar durante el verano! Todos nuestros practicantes pueden recibir pago semanal a través del DC Summer Youth Employment Program, así que asegúrense de inscribirse a tiempo.

BLOOMBERG ARTS – PROGRAMA PARA PASANTES (Futuros estudiantes seniors)

Los estudiantes que serán seniors en su próximo año escolar podrán participar de programas de internado en oganizaciones culturales y artísticas tres veces a la semana y recibir entrenamiento en preparación universitaria y desarrollo de destrezas laborales dos veces a la semana. Los participantes recibirán un pago de $19 la hora y pueden trabajar hasta 40 horas semanales.

Como parte del programa BAI, los participantes tienen la oportunidad de visitar universidades, ir a excursiones culturales y participar de talleres creativos y de desarrollo profesional.

INFORMACIÓN DEL CAMP SITAR

Camp Sitar ofrece programas de día completo que están disponibles para estudiantes de Kindergarten a Grado 8.

PROTOCOLOS DE SEGURIDAD

A continuación, se muestran algunos de los pasos que estamos tomando para crear un entorno de aprendizaje seguro este verano.

Vamos a:

• Requerir vacunas para COVID 19 para todos estudiantes, la facultad, y el personal de Sitar.*

• El uso de mascarillas será opcional para estudiantes, facultad y personal de Sitar.

• Los estudiantes consumirán su almuerzo en sus respectivos salones.

• Limpiar y desinfectar las aulas y áreas de alto tráfico durante y al final de cada día.

Sitar Arts Center continuará monitoreando las directrices y el protocolo de seguridad según lo dispuesto por el Distrito de Columbia. En el caso de que la programación en persona ya no pueda continuar de manera segura o deba detenerse debido a cambios en las directrices/protocolo, Sitar Arts Center se comunicará con las familias de los estudiantes para averiguar alternativas que incluyen programación virtual y/o proporcionar créditos o reembolsos de matrícula.

No hay una enfermera en el personal. El personal de Sitar está certificado para administrar medicamentos y primeros auxilios/RCP durante las horas del campamento.

Todos los estudiantes que asistan a Camp Sitar deberán presentar VERIFICACIÓN DE VACUNACIÓN COVID 19 y un FORMULARIO VÁLIDO DE SALUD E INMUNIZACIÓN DE DC a más tardar el 26 de mayo. Si el formulario no se recibe para esa fecha, perderá su espacio y no se otorgarán reembolsos.

* Este verano estaremos aceptando certificaciones válidas del Departamento de Salud de DC para excepciones religiosas de inmunización. A los estudiantes con estas excepciones se les requerirá el uso de mascarillas dentro de las facilidades, excepto cuando estén comiendo o bebiendo.

ALIMENTOS

Nuestro programa de alimentos para el verano es auspiciado por DC Free Summer Meals Program a través de DC Central Kitchen. Las familias deberán inscribir a su estudiante en el programa durante el periodo de registro para recibir desayuno y/o almuerzo. De no estar interesado en el programa, deberá enviar a su estudiante con almuerzo empacado. Algunos alimentos no son permitidos debido a posibles alergias y reglamentos de alimentos del Campamento Sitar. Esos alimentos se mencionan adelante. El menú de los alimentos gratuitos se proveerá durante el campamento.

DESAYUNO

Se servirá en las mañanas de 8:30-8:50.

ALMUERZO

Se servirá de 12:00-12:30. El periodo de almuerzo es de 30 minutos.

Los estudiantes deben traer una botella de agua reusable todos los días al campamento. Por favor asegúrese de identificar TODAS las loncheras, recipientes y botellas de agua con el nombre de su estudiante.

NOTA: Sitar Arts Center y sus organizaciones asociadas no son responsables por artículos perdidos o dañados o por guardar alimentos personales.

REGLAS DEL ALMUERZO

• Al inscribirse, deben informarnos de todas las alergias alimentarias

• NO se permiten dulces, chicles, refrescos, comida rápida, (fast food) ni ningún producto de nueces

• Identifique con el nombre cualquier recipiente, incluida la lonchera y la botella de agua.

• Los estudiantes no podrán calentar su comida.

• Los estudiantes no pueden recoger comida de un vendedor externo o enviar a sus hermanos, personal o pasantes a recoger comida.

PRESENTACIONES DEL CAMPAMENTO

Al final de cada sesión semanal, los estudiantes tendrán la oportunidad de exhibir o presentar lo que han aprendido en nuestros viernes de Casa Abierta. Los padres están invitados para asistir los viernes desde las 3:30 y así ver lo que sus estudiantes han estado haciendo en el campamento.

En adición, al final del verano exhibiremos los trabajos de arte de las seis semanas en nuestra galería. La exhibición permanecerá abierta hasta octubre. Los invitamos a pasar y ver los excepcionales trabajos de arte creados durante el verano.

EXCURSIONES Y ACTIVIDADES DEL CAMPAMENTO

Camp Sitar siempre tiene excursiones excelentes y actividades comunitarias, además de actividades para reforzar el espíritu del campamento. Continuaremos con la mayoría de nuestros días tradicionales, como el Día de Agua, el Día de Juegos, Smore’s y algunas otras actividades especiales. En el calendario también tendrá los Miércoles Locos y la Semana de Espíritu, cuando les invitamos a los estudiantes a ser creativos con estilos divertidos, celebrar su herencia cultural o mostrar su espíritu de equipo. Las familias recibirán un calendario de estas actividades maravillosas después de la inscripción.

ORIENTACIÓN DEL CAMPAMENTO

¡Camp Sitar ofrecerá la orientación del campamento para estudiantes y familias! Se invita a las familias nuevas y las que regresan a asistir.

• Aprenderán sobre el día del campamento, excursiones, actividades y los cursos artísticos

• Conocerán al personal y a los maestros del campamento

• Podrán hacer preguntas
