Chairman’s Message Welcome to Cork Craft Month 2017 It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Cork Craft Month on behalf of the board and members of Cork Craft and Design. Now in its eight year our growing craft festival spans both the city and county with an abundance of talented craftspeople using their ingenuity and skills to produce exquisite craft products throughout Cork. We invite you to join with us in celebrating the diversity of craft available to view, buy, see, collect, touch, and simply enjoy. 2017 is a landmark year for Cork Craft & Design; with the help of the Cork Local Enterprise Offices and the Cork County Council, we are delighted to have opened our new headquarters and cooperative craft shop at 27a St Patrick’s Woolen Mills, Douglas, Co. Cork. The opening of this new premises marks an important milestone in the organisations ongoing strategy to be at the heart of the support and development of small craft enterprises in Cork. There is a lot of craft activity in the heart of Cork city this year; ‘CONFIGURATION ‘our showcase exhibition features work from some of Corks well established makers in Cork city hall and ‘Emerge’ at the CIT Wandesford Quay Gallery features the work of talented new graduates in craft from three Cork colleges. Have a full and exciting programme of exhibitions, open studios, free demonstrations, and workshops throughout the county for you to explore and enjoy. Core Events 2017 Cork Craft & Design is a voluntary organisation that brings together craft makers from many discipline’s based all over Cork city and county. This is the eighth year that we have programmed an exciting month of craft events to provide you with great opportunities to see, touch and purchase some the very best craft being produced in Ireland today. ‘Emerge’ New Makers Exhibition CIT Wandesford Quay Gallery, Clarke’s Bridge, Wandesford Quay, Cork Friday 4th – Saturday 26th August Tue - Fri: 11.00am to 5.00pm Sat: 12:00pm to 5:00pm

‘Emerge’ proudly debuts work from graduating students of C.I.T Crawford College of Art and Design, Coláiste Stiofáin Naofa and St Johns Central College as part of Cork Craft Month. Each of the makers has taken their first steps toward professional practice moving outside of the college campus. Presenting works from the three college’s “Emerge” aims to give the city a snapshot of what ‘up and coming’ contemporary Irish design and craft looks like. An appreciation of raw materials and age-old craft skills are blended with modern technology and production methods. We see design influences at play from a mass of in depth research. Clean forms often mask hours of planning, testing, and careful production required to complete these pieces. Two free childrens workshops will take place during August as part of this exhibition, see page 26 for more details. Opening Night on Friday 4th Aug @ 6:00pm. All are welcome! “The Wild Atlantic Way” An exhibition of handmade craft, paintings and photography. Charlie Mahon – Solo Show Mill Cove Gallery , Mill Cove House , Castletownbere, Co. Cork 10th – 24th August

Charlie graduated from Crawford College of Art in sculpture and then went to the University of Mississippi, USA to study ceramics with Professor Ron Dale. On returning to Ireland he concentrated on using clay as an art form. He uses his sculptural background with his wild and witty imagination to bring forth images moulded in clay. His work has a great sense of enjoyable comedy.

Benchspace, Cork’s shared access workshop for furniture makers and fine woodworkers, will hold two open studio days as part of Cork Craft Month.Visitors are welcome to look behind the scenes and meet the makers who work at this exciting new maker space. Members will be demonstrating woodwork techniques and there will a chance for visitors to try their hand at this amazing craft.This is an excellent opportunity for those curious about fine woodwork or who might like to get involved in the Benchspace programme. FREE Papercraft demonstration: The Beauty of Quilling with Ioana Cretu

Ioana Cretu of ‘The Beauty of Quilling’ will demonstrate the papercraft technique of quilling in Kinsale. Quilling or paper filigree is an art form that involves the use of strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and glued together to create decorative designs. E: cretuioana@yahoo.com
