Welcome to the 15th Cork Lifelong Learning Festival. Cork’s Lifelong Learning Festival has developed from a very small two-day event in the city to an internationally recognised festival of learning where other cities across the world have seen its value and organised similar festivals. Thanks to all who organise free events and open their doors to the public to showcase the best on offer, not just for the week, but throughout the year. Learning takes place in many formats and Cork’s Lifelong Learning Festival is a prime example. Its motto is to Investigate, Participate and Celebrate learning. I encourage

you to browse through the programme and plan your week around the many events in libraries, colleges, community development centres, and many indoor and outdoor venues. I had the honour to welcome delegates from across the world last September for the 3rd UNESCO International Conference on Learning Cities, a unique event for the city where previous conferences were in the cities of Beijing (2013) and Mexico City (2015). Cork was also the first Irish city to receive the inaugural UNESCO Learning City Award in 2015 as a result of the

Lifelong Learning Festival and other initiatives it has inspired. On behalf of the people of Cork I wish to formally acknowledge the contribution made by the event organisers, generous sponsors and the immense voluntary effort of all involved.

A Chairde, It is with great pride that I welcome you to the 15th Cork Lifelong Learning Festival, on behalf of Cork ETB, with Cork City Council, and our partners: CIT, UCC, the HSE, NAPD and all our Festival friends, supporters and funders. Since its beginnings in 2004 Cork ETB has been proud to be part of the development of this festival of learning that has come to be recognised by UNESCO as an example of best practice worldwide. The festival in many ways represents Cork Learning City in action, and was selected to feature in the Cork keynote address during the UNESCO International Conference on Learning Cities, hosted in the city in September 2017. During the year the Festival was also selected by UNESCO as a best practice model of Celebration of learning. To have a short film on our Festival featured on the UNESCO Institute of Lifelong Learning website as a tutorial for other cities is an immense source of pride for all involved. The conference was also the occasion when the publication on organising a Lifelong Learning Festival written by Tina Neylon, was launched and distributed to cities worldwide. As we have come to realise, it is the inclusive aspect of the Festival that has marked it out as an example for other cities, and this is due to the efforts of all who have made the Festival what it is. Well done. 2018 marks a new change as we welcome Siubhán McCarthy on board as co-ordinator. The role of the co-ordinator has been key to the successfull developments to date and Tina Neylon deserves great credit for her contribution. Siubhán brings her own extensive experience to the festival, continuing the good work done previously and building and growing it for the future. In support of this work the ongoing commitment and support of all the people who make the festival happen, including the committee and its dedicated chair Willie McAuliffe, deserves to be acknowledged again this year. FREE SEMINAR EVENT UNESCO CORK CALL TO ACTION – the next steps Global Goals - Local Actions was the theme of the UNESCO 3rd International Conference on Learning Cities proudly hosted by Cork city in September 2017. Over 500 delegates were involved two days of discussions followed by a day when Cork Learning City came to life, showcasing to our visitors the best of what our city has to offer in learning of all kinds, formal, non-formal and informal. This Seminar considers the key outcome of these discussions: the UNESCO Cork Call to Action for Learning Cities, adopted at the Conference closing ceremony. In this document UNESCO calls on cities worldwide to implement to develop their city as: i. Green and Healthy ii. Equitable and Inclusive iii. Supporting decent work and Entrepreneurship Now we consider how we respond.

Cork City Council has now formally adopted this policy and as Lead Partner in Cork Learning City seeks to explore one of these themes as they apply to Cork: Developing Equitable and Inclusive Learning and living environments. As part of a growing partnership with Limerick who were Awarded with a UNESCO Learning City Award in 2017, we are organising two Seminars during our Lifelong Learning Festivals on this theme. Come and hear Cork and Limerick speakers, joined by guests from other Learning Cities including: • Bristol; • Belfast, With an input from • UNESCO Institute of Lifelong Learning. Ne ghbOurhood LEARNING NEIGHBOURHOODS Learning Neighbourhoods celebrates inclusive learning opportunities and creates new ones for communities throughout Cork. The programme involves a number of activities including: • Raising awareness of opportunities for learning, • Developing new initiatives, • Supporting promotional activities, • Offering support and guidance to apply for funding to sustain activities of the learning neighbourhood. Learning Neighbourhoods began in Cork in 2015-2016, with two neighbourhoods, Ballyphehane and Knocknaheeny taking part and Togher and Mayfield both joined the programme in 2016-2017.

Togher Ballyphehane Community Education Network The Garden Theatre, Lower Friars Walk, Ballyphehane Join us this Lifelong Learning Festival for a celebration of the women who were activists and educators, crafts women and carers, politicians and sportswomen! The last 100 years were Smashing Times – did your granny have a hammer? Maybe her contribution was through a book or a pen, maybe it was a crochet hook or the hen money she put aside. There are multiple ways in which women have contributed to change and improving life-chances for everyone! Our MC for Smashing Times will be Lillian Smith; Broadcaster with RTE Radio 1 Togher Ballyphehane Community Education Network marks Votáil 100 and the hundreds of women who have contributed to our communities, our city and our nation. A little girl was born in Cork 140 years ago, she was part of the nationalist revolutionary politics that helped found our state and she also worked for freedom for women. In 1912 she would break a window in Dublin Castle as part of the Suffrage campaign – Hannah Sheehy Skeffington is one of the many women we will celebrate during this Centenary Year event! CORK LIFELONG LEARNING FESTIVAL & FEILE AN PHOBAIL The Cork Lifelong Learning Festival has strong links with Féile an Phobail in West Belfast – the largest community festival on these islands. The relationship grew out of a wish that people from different communities at either end of the island of Ireland learn a little about each other, and how better to do that than by working on projects together.

The partnership between the two festivals built up gradually, much as the festivals themselves have grown. It started after a three-year Co-operation Ireland project which brought together Mayfield Arts Centre with Southcity in Belfast, culminating with the unveiling of a mural the groups painted during the 2008 festival. The following year that mural was used as a backdrop for an event in Triskel Arts Centre, where Danny Morrison, then Chair of Féile an Phobail & Declan Hassett, formerly Arts Editor at the Irish Examiner, read from their writings.

In 2010 the partnership between the two festivals was formally announced. The following year the President of Ireland Mary McAleese welcomed that relationship as she officially opened the Cork festival. In 2012 the Lord Mayor of Belfast jointly launched the festival with the Lord Mayor of Cork. Over the years a number of exchanges & projects have taken place – including mural painting by Mahon Community Development Project’s Men’s Art Group under instruction from Belfast mural artists, with the Cork ‘Mural Men’ invited to create a mural off the Falls Road during Féile an Phobail.

On Horgan’s Quay in Cork you can see a mural painted by young unemployed men from Belfast working with their counterparts from Mahon, marking the centenary of the sinking of the Titanic. Other murals can be seen along the Blackrock Walkway and in the car park next to the CIT Blackrock Castle Observatory. Each year young people from nationalist and loyalist areas in Belfast and Lisburn visit Cork to learn how to build currachs & row the traditional boats with Meitheal Mara. They return with their boats to take part in the Youth Race during the annual Ocean to City Race – which they have even won. Among those from Cork who have taken part in Féile an Phobail are writers Conal Creedon and Gerry Murphy, hurler Donal Og Cusack, Ted Owens of Cork ETB, William Hammond of the Cork Folk Festival, Pádraig Ó Duinnín and others from Meitheal Mara.

Relationships have built up between the individuals & organisations involved, so much so that they continue year-round. They have extended way beyond the festivals, including participation by Cork in the Belfast City Marathon & vice versa and Belfast taking part in Ocean to City. Féile an Phobail now has its own traditional boat-building programme and Mahon’s Men’s Art Group with its counterparts in Belfast jointly take part in international exchanges. In areas where there is or has been conflict it is vital that barriers are broken down between different communities & enjoyable events including festivals have a huge role to play. Bringing even just a few individuals together to work on projects can forge new understanding & co-operation. It is hoped that the twinning of the two festivals is copied in other places in the world which are experiencing or emerging from conflict. This year Féile an Phobail celebrates its 30th anniversary and the Cork festival will be taking part in its flagship August event.

This event explores the interest of people at or over 65 years of age to establish if they might be interested in learning business and entrepreneurial skills This event will provide a taster programme and facilitate the participant to identify core skills, values and attributes of an entrepreneur and relate these to their own personal skill set and life experience. Participants will explore how business ideas are generated and take part in a brainstorming exercise and a tour of the Rubicon Incubator Centre. This event forms part of the preliminary research for a PhD programme within CIT to develop entrepreneurial skills training for people at or over 65 years of age. CHORAL RECITAL BY ‘CÓR CHÚIL AODHA’ Cór Cúil Aodha was founded by Sean O Riada in 1963, after moving with his family to Cuil Aodha in the Cork Gaeltacht. Since his death in 1971, his son Peadar has been director of the choir, and it is he who now composes much of their music, with the late Dónal Ó Liatháin writing the words for a lot of the songs. The choir is an all men’s choir of all ages.
