Q A
What will SOAR do for me? Consider SOAR your guidebook to the new universe you are about to enter. At SOAR, you’ll take care of some of the major things you need to do – like register for classes. You’ll also take care of some of the details – like reserving your textbooks and getting your student ID. Here are some of the other things you can expect during SOAR: • Meet with an academic advisor and with faculty and staff from your major area. • Set up your Debit Dawg account. • Get the lowdown on student medical insurance. • Visit the Recreation Center, Student Health Center, Student Center and more. • Learn about the city of Carbondale. NOTE: We encourage your family to participate in SOAR with you. That way you can focus on your concerns and your parents can focus on theirs. Benefits of SOAR: • No guesswork needed. After SOAR, you should hit the ground running on the first day of classes. You’ll know where your classes are, what they are, when they are, what books you need for them, and what to do if the class is harder than you expected. • Friendly faces on the horizon. As a veteran of SOAR, you will begin your first semester already acquainted with both new students like you and also some upper-classmen who know their way around here. You will also get to know some of the professors and instructors, and some of the academic support staff. • Fitting in is easy. At SOAR, you’ll learn about campus social life, including our more than 400 Registered Student Organizations. When and where is SOAR? For more information and to register for SOAR, visit the Web site. Or call 618/453-1000. www.soar.siu.edu

Apply for Financial Aid Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Alert! Notice! Pay attention! Advisory! Do this early! The FAFSA form is online at www.fafsa.ed.gov beginning in January 2010. To receive full consideration for all forms of financial aid at Southern, you should complete and submit the FAFSA before April 1, 2010. SIUC’s federal code is 001758. Cost of Attendance – Expected Family Contribution = Financial Need The Office of Financial Aid uses information from your FAFSA to develop a financial aid package, including a combination of grants, scholarships, loans and student employment. We do our best to provide a financial aid package that meets the needs of you and your family. Beginning in March 2010, students admitted to SIUC should receive an email response from the Financial Aid Office within one week of SIUC receiving your FAFSA information. For more information or to check your status, call 618/453-4334, or visit the Web site. www.siu.edu/~fao

What if I am admitted to SIUC but want to attend in a different semester? If you decide you want to come to Southern in a semester other than the one for which you are admitted, you must contact SIUC Undergraduate Admissions before the semester for which you have been admitted starts. We will hold your records for one semester. After that, we will automatically delete your records unless you request admission for another term. If you don’t let us know you want us to hold your records, you will have to begin the application process again – including paying the application fee. If you have questions, call SIUC Undergraduate Admissions at 618/536-4405 or email us at joinsiuc@siu.edu.
What if I want to cancel my Student Health Insurance? The fees you pay every semester include a Student Health Insurance Plan. If you already have another health insurance policy and don’t want to be included in the plan we offer, you may request a refund of that part of your fees. To do that, apply for the refund by the Friday of the second week of classes (in either the fall or the spring semesters) or by the Friday of the first week of class in the summer semester. Apply at the Student Health Center for the refund. Note: You will need to apply for the refund every semester. If you have questions or need more information, check www.shc.siuc.edu or call us at 618/453-3311.
