Something about this campus just really clicked with me. When I went home after that first campus visit, I just wanted to come right back. It’s still like that for me. I love taking sidetrips to places like Makanda, where I can find local art and the best coffee selection.

Elizabeth Lombardi, Research Rookie from Wheaton, majoring in human nutrition and dietetics

Discover Southern Illinois University Carbondale, a University as individual as you are in a part of Illinois you may never have known existed. If you love the outdoors, you’ll love Southern Illinois! Whether you are already adept at rock climbing or you don’t know a canoe from a kayak, you’ll find something here to tempt you outdoors. From the wilderness areas of the Shawnee National Forest to historical sites such as Kincaid Mounds and CaveIn-Rock, we’ve got adventure. Check out the area’s minor league baseball team or the small art galleries in towns throughout the region. And then come back to relax at Lake on the Campus. But don’t think we are too rustic! We have multiple venues for theater, music, indoor and outdoor concerts, boutiques, international cuisine, coffee shops and fine dining, movie theaters, major retailers and yes, a shopping mall.

I came to Southern because of the academic reputation and because it is affordable. Now that I am here, I really love everything about it, from the way the campus is organized to the many opportunities I have here.

Antwuan Donley, Chicago, Chemistry major and McNair Scholar, member of Alpha Chi Sigma and Sigma Alpha Lambda

SALUKIS

in the “Real World”

Southern makes education affordable, so I was able to put myself through college there. Now, as my 25-year-career marker approaches, I feel ever increasing gratitude to Southern. I thank heaven for such a grounded foundation – from the core curriculum to the highly specific major requirements. I have my dream job at WLS in Chicago.

Maura Myles, BA 1990 in Radio and Television, midday anchor and traffic reporter at WLS-AM Radio, and co-host of the weekend show “Women of Mass Discussion”

As we started our business, we saw the direct correlation with what we learned in class at Southern. When I explained to my professors that I was starting my own business, they took a direct interest. In fact, many had me speak in class as a demonstration about what is possible in entrepreneurship. College is what you make it, it’s a stepping stone to achieving your goals.

Faculty Some of the most important relationships you forge during your college years are with your professors and instructors. At Southern, our faculty is devoted to teaching as well as to research and their creative endeavors. They bring experience to the classroom, and they bring the classroom into the world. Our students report that faculty are accessible, interested in the success of their students, nurturing, and personable.

One of the things architecture teaches, one of the reasons there is an architecture course in the University Core Curriculum, is not just to solve a problem, but to define the problem before we try to solve it. I want my students to make a connection with the world around them. I bring my own experiences to the classroom to make learning a more fun, on-going process.

Why SOUTHERN? • Emphasis on problem-based learning with undergraduate research and creative projects

Internships

• Practical skills and career exploration gained from internships

An internship is an opportunity to gain academic credit and job experience at the same time. You’ll participate in the environment of the career you’ve chosen. You’ll make professional contacts. You may gain a mentor. You may land a permanent job. Many majors have internship programs already in place. In addition, Career Services can help you with resume and cover letter writing and even practice interviews.

• Living Learning Communities bring learning right into your residence hall

Undergraduate Research

• Learning beyond the classroom with internships and opportunities for study abroad

• Opportunities for service learning through the Saluki Volunteer Corps • The Saluki First Year program helps you make the most of your first year at Southern

Why should the professors have all the fun? Learn by doing at Southern with undergraduate research opportunities. We don’t mean the kind where you complete an assignment for class. We mean the kind where you pursue a topic that captivates you, where you track down and solve problems, where, under the guidance of a faculty mentor you choose, you take learning to the next level.

I want the whole college

experience, and getting involved does that for me. The Research Rookies program got me talking to my professors, and they make sure I am aware of the opportunities on this campus.

Salukis Travel the World Study Abroad opportunities for Southern students include short-term programs and semester or year-long exchanges. Many departments offer major-specific study abroad opportunities as well. Our students have studied northern jaguars in Mexico, connected with contemporary women in the Muslim culture of Morocco, and blended into Parisian society in France. Visit www.ips.siu.edu/sa for some of the study abroad opportunities. Students may also serve an externship over spring break. The program, offered through the SIU Alumni Association, helps match students with Southern alumni around the world.

I went to Mozambique and South Africa as an undergraduate research assistant, partly funded by an NSF-IRES grant. I was involved in a study using dendochronology – reading tree rings – to help determine the sustainability of forestry practices. I always wanted to work in Africa – Southern helped me take advantage of my opportunities.

Fear not, brave Saluki, academic support is here. • Supplemental Instruction – tutoring in courses including biology, chemistry, economics, geology, and mathematics supplementalinstruction.siuc.edu • The Writing Centers – with several locations on campus, students may walk in for help, or use the OWL (Online Writing Lab) write.siuc.edu • Mathematics – tutoring just for math classes, available with no appointment necessary

Southern is a studentcentered institution. I feel privileged to be part of a university that truly cares about the wellbeing and success of its students. One of the qualities I most admire in our students is their ‘cando’ attitude – our students are problem-solvers. Their ready-to-learn attitude makes a huge difference in the classroom.

Q

I don’t know what I want to do with the rest of my life. I’m not sure what to choose for my major. Is that bad? Relax – possibilities and opportunities are part of what you learn at college. There might be a major you’ve never considered or a career you’ve never heard of that is just right for you. Use the Pre-Major Advisement Center and the Career Exploration Service to find that major and career goal.

When I visited Southern, I learned how many opportunities there are for handson learning, especially compared with some of the other schools I considered. Our seniors are getting jobs when they graduate. One of the guys on our Formula SAE team got hired just last week. I feel like I don’t need to worry too much.

Brad Wilson, mechanical engineering major from Herrick, and a member of the SIUC Formula SAE racing team.

Recreation and Fun Get Involved

With more than 400 Registered Student Organizations (RSOs), it’s a sure thing you’ll find something that interests you. Many of the majors have RSOs and many others are affiliated with career goals. And some are purely recreational. siuc.orgsync.com/home

Get Back to Nature Our backyard is a playground, supersized. Slide through Fatman’s Squeeze at Giant City State Park, search for the submerged road at Bum’s Beach on Little Grassy Lake, find some whitewater at Lusk Creek after a rain, or try the High Ropes course at our own Touch of Nature Environmental Center.

The Dawg Pound Loud and proud, the Dawg Pound earned its own home game seating area and makes sure the other team knows the Salukis are in the house. Southern boasts successful football, baseball, softball and men’s and women’s basketball teams as well as a full roster of Division I sports. Even if you aren’t a sports fan, experience the Dawg Pound at least once.

Get Smart

Attend a lecture or a literary reading. There is almost always something going on, whether a scholarly conference, literary festival, visiting artist or guest speaker. Past guests include activist Cornel West, Cherokee master storyteller Robert Lewis, and poet Maya Angelou as well as ambassadors, policy makers and international journalists.

Check out Campus Lake We have a 2.2 mile trail for walking or running, a beach, and a lakeside disc golf course. Visit the boat docks, and rent a kayak or paddle boat, or try a moonlight canoe event.

Get in Shape Admission to the SIUC Recreation Center is free with valid student identification. Climb to the rafters on our climbing wall or dive in deep in the Olympic-size indoor swimming pool. The Rec Center includes free weights, cardio and weight machines, two indoor tracks, basketball, tennis, racquetball and handball courts. www.reccenter.siu.edu

Hit a Venue

Get your culture on at one of the campus venues. McLeod Theater offers several plays a semester and Kleinau Theater presents performance art. University Museum hosts exhibits from our permanent collection and traveling exhibits, such as Ansel Adams photography. The Old Baptist Foundation Recital Hall and Shryock Auditorium feature stage performances, including comedian Ron White and blues rock guitar legend B. B. King.

Go to Town

Check out Carbondale – the downtown or the business district, the parks, the mall. Or check out some of the nearby towns – each of them gems in their own right. Some of these sites will become part of your Saluki memories.

Student Center One of the largest in the nation, the Student Center is at the heart of student activities. You can catch a movie or a comedian sponsored by the Student Programming Council, have lunch or a latte, get creative in the Craft Shop, load your Debit Dawg card, power your laptop in the student lounges, or unwind with bowling and billiards.

I came here because I’d heard amazing stories about the opportunities available at Southern - about the academics, and the creative projects, and the connections you can make with other like-minded people.

Steve Looten, a theater major from Quincy specializing in stage combat, a REACH Scholar whose project included full production of a play.

I chose Southern because it is nationally ranked #2 for students with disabilities, and I wanted a school that had all the advantages for me to succeed both physically and academically on my own.

Danielle Austin – a University Studies major from Carol Stream

12

We also want all our students to participate fully in campus life, not just academic life. Students have opportunities for whitewater rafting, water skiing, horseback riding and other activities with specially modified equipment. When we say boundary free, we don’t mean just on campus. disabilityservices.siuc.edu

Campus Safety

For students away from home for the first time, safety is an important issue. Southern maintains a full-time police force, and runs several programs – including a segment during orientation – to help students learn to make safety part of their everyday lives. Students and parents may sign up for WENS – our textmessage based wireless emergency notification system.

Safety Programs: • General on-campus and off-campus safety guidelines • SIUC Alert - text-message emergency notification • Enhanced 911 Public Safety Answering Point • Night Safety Transit • Emergency call boxes • Brightway Paths www.dps.siu.edu

Campus Housing The College Experience Living on campus is an important part of the college experience. Most of our freshmen and sophomores live on campus, and many upperclassmen choose to remain on campus throughout their four years at Southern. Residence halls are where students connect with each other, forge friendships, and make memories. Go online for floor plans, virtual tours and housing policies. www.housing.siu.edu

Q

A

Am I required to live on campus? If you are unmarried, under 21 years old, have fewer than 26 college credit hours earned after high school, and do not live with your parents or guardians – yes. There are plenty of housing options, from lakeside to high-rise, and a variety of floor plans and dining options to help you find the right college home-life for you. You can join a Living Learning Community (LLC) and improve your grades and social life. LLCs are residence hall communities for students in the same majors or colleges. Studies show that students in LLCs get better grades and feel more connected to their campus. Southern has a spacious campus, yet it is still convenient to walk or bicycle to class. Or use the Saluki Express bus system – which is free with a valid student i.d.

Q

Will I like the food? It would take a very picky eater not to like the food at Southern! Why? Choice is on the menu every day. We offer healthy options – so noted by the Saluki Paw Print of Approval. Here’s a hint – since you can eat in any of the dining halls, check out the menus for each online. Here’s another hint – Chef Bill’s made-to-order omelets.

“

Living in an LLC is living with friends. We all help each other with class projects. If someone down the hall is making a video for a class, I might be in the video and then she might help me with editing. I got a lot of help from some of the upper classmen in understanding some of the programs we need to learn. Tony Jou, a radio-television major from Bartlett
