Visual Identity Policy
The Southern Illinois University Visual Identity Manual ensures the success of our identity through consistency of use. Identifying specific colleges, schools, programs, or academic units by using these guidelines strengthens each component of the University, as well as Southern Illinois University as a whole. The consistent use of this visual identity also serves to connect the SIU community to the larger brand.
Introduction
1 .1
Letter from the Chancellor
Dear Friends and Colleagues, We’re about to begin another amazing chapter in our 134-year history. I was drawn to Southern Illinois University because of its rich history of accomplishments. The achievements you have been part of and made possible. But I also can’t help feel the thrill of all the incredible things still waiting to be discovered, invented, and created right here. As long as I’ve been involved with SIU, I’ve been one of our most vocal advocates. Even if that meant addressing misperceptions one person at a time. Now, I’m happy to say, our message is about to reach a much wider audience. We’re embarking on a mission to make sure that everyone understands exactly what SIU means to Illinois and the world. After months of research and planning, we’re ready to launch a new brand campaign. One that will demonstrate that SIU has all the brains of a nationally ranked research university while preserving the heart of a small college. A place that is powered by relationships. Where big things will always be within reach. What you are about to read is an important component of this effort. Our identity, while not the brand by itself, will undoubtedly be the most visible part of our reintroduction. This guide will help every school, department, and staff member gain a thorough understanding of the new identity system—and that will help lay the groundwork for our overall goal: a stronger, more unified SIU brand. This is an exciting and crucial time for SIU. You helped get us here. And we couldn’t possibly move forward without you. Together we’ll show everyone, everywhere, what it means to be a Saluki.
Deepest regards,
Southern Illinois University Visual Identity Manual

Visual Identity Policy
The new visual identity must be used consistently. It is the University’s policy that the signatures, type fonts, and marks described in this manual are the only ones authorized and are required to be used in / on all forms of media and communication materials. Within the framework of the new identity system, there is flexibility to accommodate the needs of units throughout the University. University Communications is responsible for ensuring that the new visual identity is preserved and enhanced through effective, well-designed communications. It monitors the use of the system and makes graphics available to the University community and other authorized parties. If you have questions concerning the system or need to obtain graphic signatures, contact University Communications at 453-2276.
Use of University marks on commercial goods The Southern Illinois University name and logo are registered marks owned by the University. These marks may not be used in any medium other than approved University programs without the approval of University Communications, who must review the use of our marks by outside vendors or firms. Student groups wishing to use the University’s marks on commercial goods (i.e., T-shirts, bumper stickers, etc.) also must secure such approval. Submit all requests for use of these marks to University Communications. All manufacturers who produce goods bearing any of the University’s trademarks must either be licensed or receive special permission to produce such products without a formal license agreement. If you have questions regarding the use of the University’s name or logo, contact University Communications at 453-2276.

The signatures on the left are the preferred primary element of the Southern Illinois University visual identity system and must appear on all official external communications. There are two versions of the SIU logomark (the initials SIU plus the word Carbondale): the shadow inset and the highlight inset. Guidelines for their usage are on page 2.3. The logo may not be modified in any way. It is available to all users in multiple formats. Contact University Communications at 453-2276. SIU Carbondale signature should be place on the front of all print materials. If placement on the front is not possible, the logo can be placed on the back cover; however, the front cover must be clearly and prominently marked with text that reads SIU Carbondale or Southern Illinois University Carbondale. The decision about which layout to use should be based on the space available (horizontal or vertical), except in web applications, where the two-line wordmark is preferred. Refer to pages 3.2–3.3 for logomark coloration options.

SHADOW INSET VERSION: This version conveys prestige, subtlety, and refinement; it is closely aligned with the University brand expression. Use this version only on a white background. It is best used in printing on coated sheets, in a digital environment, and on large-size embroidery. The minimum preferred width is 10 picas, except on institutional collateral (stationery, business cards). HIGHLIGHT INSET VERSION: This version has higher impact, and it should be used when a bold depiction of the SIU brand is appropriate. It should also be used where the size is small, in print advertising, on the web, and in decorative applications. It is preferred for items seen at great distances. SIU Event Logos
SIU Event Logos As explained in the University’s campus identity manual, the use of logos other than the University’s wordmark and lettermark (often called secondary logos) is prohibited. There are instances, however, when University departments would like to use a symbol, mark, picture, custom text, or design to promote an event, initiated within the University and of limited duration. In these instances, these departments are allowed to use an event logo. An event logo is any symbol, mark, picture, custom text, or design that is used to promote an event of limited duration. Restrictions To be considered an event logo and not a prohibited secondary logo, the logo must adhere to the following rules: 1) The event logo must include a word or phrase that conveys to the audience that it is of limited duration. This would include, but is not limited to, words like “series, symposium, festival, conference, party, open house, or meeting.” 2) The item or media on which the event logo is placed must include a specific date, month, or year to convey to the audience that it is of limited duration. USAGE: • Apparel / promotional items • Print/digital applications • Temporary signage
3) The event logo must include one of the following to convey to the audience that it is a Southern Illinois University Carbondale event: • “SIU Carbondale” or the phrase “Southern Illinois University Carbondale” must be in the logo itself; OR • “SIU Carbondale” or the phrase “Southern Illinois University Carbondale” across the top or the bottom or with the phrase “presented by”, “brought to you by”, “a program of ” or similar language; OR • a campus identifier or the University’s wordmark of equal or larger size must appear on the item where the logo appears. 4) If the event logo appears in a printed advertisement, publication, poster, post card or any form of offset or web press printing, a campus identifier or the University’s wordmark must also be present. With written approval from University Communications, the SIUC letermark may be substituted. In the case of contracted services that have external event logos (for example: musical concerts, theater performances, circus shows, and others), the University’s wordmark, or the words “Southern Illinois University Carbondale” must be present somewhere on the promotional media. Inquiries concerning these guidelines should be directed to the University Communications department. All event logos must be pre-approved by University Communications. Submissions can be sent to your account executive.

Preferred Seal
2.13
Official University Seal The official University seal has very limited use, primarily on formal University documents, such as contracts, deeds, and academic diplomas. The University seal is used in place of the SIU logomark in the Southern Illinois University system signature that appears on the presidential website, and it also appears in the footer of the SIU Carbondale website as a link to the presidential site. It also may be used, with authorization, as a design element on certain ceremonial communications, such as formal invitations, and on quality clothing and gift items. All such uses require prior approval from University Communications at 453-2276.
Seal Color Option
The official University seal is a “stand-alone mark of the University, which should not be combined with the Southern Illinois University signature.

Email Signature In order to maintain consistency across the University in internal as well as external email communications, we are recommending a format for the signoff signature. A serif font should be used for the body of the email. Email signatures should be set in 9pt Trebuchet. The sender’s name should be all caps over his/her title in regular black. The signature should have a full paragraph break before listing the office name and address in SIU Maroon. After another full paragraph break, the signature should list the email address, phone, cell phone, and fax number. Lastly, the signature should list the University’s website (SIU.EDU). NOTE: Use of SIU Carbondale signature following the email signature is optional.
