Have a positive, safe, and enriching recruitment and new member experience. Have inviolable confidentiality when sharing information with recruitment counselors. Receive an accurate picture of sorority membership and the obligations associated with it. Be fully informed about the binding agreement implicit in the preference card signing. Make one’s own decision and accept full responsibility for the results of that decision. Ask questions and receive true, objective answers from recruitment counselors. Be treated as a capable and mature person without being patronized. Make informed choices without undue pressure from others.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: Are Panhellenic sororities my only option to participate in Fraternity and Sorority Life? A: No. If you decide that a Panhellenic sorority is not the place for you, we have 4 sororities under the National Pan-Hellenic Council, as well as 1 sorority and 1 co-ed fraternity under the United Greek Council. Please see your recruitment counselor for details on these organizations.
Q: If I go through primary recruitment, am I obligated to join a sorority? A: No. If at any point during the recruitment process you feel that it is not for you, you may withdraw from primary recruitment. Rules & Regulations To be eligible to participate in recruitment, a potential new member (PNM) must be enrolled at SIUE for the Fall 2017 semester. A PNM must attend all Open House/Sisterhood Round events and all events thereafter for which she has been invited. A PNM must attend all recruitment events at the times listed on their individual event schedule. A PNM shall not take any items from the recruitment events, such as flowers, nametags, napkins, water bottles, bookmarks, etc. A PNM shall not be, or have been a new member of any NPC sorority at SIUE in the past calendar year. The use of cell phones will be prohibited during all recruitment events. During recruitment, a PNM may not have contact, besides normal/casual contact, with an undergraduate or alumnae sorority member outside of Panhellenic Council recruitment events. Normal/casual contact is friendly behavior or the way you would normally address an acquaintance. The Panhellenic Council follows a mandatory acceptance practice, which means that a PNM is required to accept all invitations up to the maximum number of recruitment events in a given round. Mandatory acceptance only applies to the event invitations selection and not to preference card signing. Sorority members shall not make promissory comments or indicate in any way to a potential member that she will be given an invitation to a recruitment event or for membership. Additionally, a PNM shall not make a promise, written or verbal, to return to or join a sorority. No PNM or sorority member shall speak unfavorable of a chapter, chapter member or another PNM. The use of alcoholic beverages or illegal drugs shall be strictly prohibited during Fall Primary Recruitment. Use will result in immediate removal from the recruitment process.

Sorority members are responsible for dues to the chapter. These dues are used to pay for community service and philanthropic projects, social events, parent and alumnae events, insurance and national fees, as well as general chapter expenses. If you accept an invitation to join, you may be asked to sign a membership and financial responsibilities agreement. You are encouraged to review all agreements carefully and discuss them with family members before making a decision.

Anti-Hazing Policy
Potential New Member: A term used for a student who has shown interest in being recruited by a sorority, or who has registered for the recruitment process. Quota: The number of new members Panhellenic sororities may accept during primary recruitment. This is determined by the College Panhellenic based on the number of potential members participating in a given recruitment period, and is not determined until after the Preference round of primary recruitment. Recruitment: The time when PHC sororities select new members. Recruitment is organized and executed by the Panhellenic Executive Board. Ritual: A ceremonial event unique to each organization that plays out the ideals and principles of that organization. This is usually the time when students take an oath to uphold the values of that organization. Unaffiliated: A student not in a sorority.
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville has a zero tolerance policy for hazing. Hazing in any form is an inappropriate activity. Hazing is defined as: “Any action taken or situation created, intentionally, whether on or off campus premises, to produce mental or physical discomfort, intimidation, embarrassment, harassment or ridicule.
Such activities may include but are not limited to the following: forced or required use of alcohol; paddling in any form; creation of excessive fatigue; physical and psychological shocks; wearing apparel which is conspicuous and/or not normally in good taste; engaging in public stunts or buffoonery; morally degrading or humiliating games or activities; deprivation of sleep; and any other inappropriate activities which are not consistent with the institutional mission and governing policies. Furthermore, the institution will treat the hazing action of even one member of the group as constituting hazing by the group. Violations of the University Hazing Policy and the State of Illinois Hazing Statute are considered a very serious offense. Groups or individuals found responsible for hazing may result in sanctions of suspension or expulsion of the individual or organization from the University.

OTHER ORGANIZATIONS
NPHC
The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) is a self-governing body that represents the nationally recognized historically African-American fraternities and sororities at SIUE. The NPHC, and each of its member organizations have non-discriminatory policies and practices. They are also actively involved in activities and programs designed to eradicate bias and discrimination in all phases of life. The formation of an NPHC ensures the philosophies of affiliate member organizations are maintained. Every fall, the National Pan-Hellenic Council sponsors a Yard Show and co-sponsors Meet the Greeks with the United Greek Council. These events provide students an opportunity to show interest in the organizations and ask questions about the joining process.

The purpose of the United Greek Council (UGC) is to create a strong and positive image which respects the diversity of its member organizations and the community as a whole through the following objectives: • • • • •
Promote high standards of scholastic achievement. Work toward diversity awareness by providing member organizations with a strong and unified voice on campus. Improve relationships among all Fraternity and Sorority Life community members. Engage in the United Greek Council community and support its’ member organizations. Provide service to the campus and community.
The United Greek Council works closely with the Kimmel Student Involvement Center Fraternity & Sorority Life staff. SIUE is currently home to one Latina sorority and one co-ed Latino fraternity. These culturally and special-interest based organizations help promote multicultural awareness and offer a fraternal and cultural experience for members at the same time. Each of the organizations listed below will hold their own informational and recruitment events this Fall.
