CHEUNG YI Application for Summer Internship with Disney Imagineering
15 Febuary 2024
Dear Ms. Lisa Bell,

I am very excited to submit my credentials and portfolio for your consideration regarding a summer internship position with Disney Imagineering. Inspiration struck after attending Babara Bouza’s captivating speech at SCI-Arc last year, propelling me to apply for this position. In addition to my immense enthusiasm towards shaping whimsical built experiences, I bring a diverse set of technical skills to the table, including advanced proficiency in 3D modeling and rendering visualizations using tools like Rhino, Zbrush, Cinema 4D, Blender, Unreal, Enscape, and Vray. Beyond these technical capabilities, I offer two distinctive skill sets:
Innovative Story-teller I have cultivated a unique design approach that integrates my technical expertise with narratives. As shown in my selected works which all begun with rhetorical question to norms, I have strong interest in imagining alternative worlds that could be possible in the future. I believe a well-told story within space has the power to evoke thoughts and connect emotions, transmitting individuals to bewitching realms. I am excited about the prospect of bringing this narrative-driven design perspective to Disney Imagineering, where every project, ranging from theme park extension, amusement rides, stage sets, interactive characters, digital media aids, to resorts and cruise ships, is an opportunity to create enchanting experiences. In my previous role as an architectural assistant, I actively participated in national competitions that demanded innovative thinking, I am confident in offering valuable assistance in the concept development stages for Disney Imagineering.
Dedicated Team Collaborator Coming from a competitive learning and working environment, I possess robust resilience, together with a strong belief that hard work rewards, especially with the duty to play as a team. I showcased this attribute during my tenure as an architectural assistant in two small firms with staff numbers ranging from 3-20. Balancing tasks across multiple projects simultaneously, I maintained high performance and proactiveness under pressure. While acknowledging my limited experience in thematic design fields, I am committed to putting in the extra effort to grasp and excel in the initial period. I am confident in my ability to learn quickly and draw motivation from my passion.
Thank you very much for your time and consideration. I am confident this unique profile and strong skill set can contribute to the Disney Imagineering. I hope to discuss the possibility of employment at your convenience. Sincerely, Yvonne, Cheung Yi

design process We delved into the fascinating world of digital zooarchaeology. A new insectoid species is uncovered by unearthing a digital block. By a slow and intuitive process of morphing and sculpting 3D models of insect parts, we gather an asset kit of objects with a specific topology. We then carve out and add on to a block with these assets in result of a lively sculpture. The block mirrors the massing of our existing building, Lincoln Heights Jail, and our intervention resembles our adaptive reuse strategies.

the plan The plan is a demonstration of how spaces are segregated according to the two main functions: the visual art program and the culinary program. The visual art side is encompassed by rough undulating walls that almost feels like the interior of a body part, this grotesque language was developed in earlier exercises. From the wall to the ground, the flooring takes up a poppy graffiti language which has been another one of our projects’ major motifs. Graffiti strokes created by the fast-moving body influences the space into a fluid one, which compliments the

design process Upon study of corner treatments of masonary, a cutting angle is introduced, enabling angled surfaces. A continuation from flat to angled walls, a weaving moment is created. This language facilitates the overall concept of “colliding volumes”. These colliding fades ‘take turns’ as interior walls and exterior walls. The angular cuts are therefore essential to forming the spatial and facade capabilities of the design.

Polytechnic Xili University Shenzhen Polytechnic Vocational University seeked for a high-quality innovative campus design for its new address in Xili Lake. The design brief was two-folded: 80,000sqm of expansion and 50,000sqm of renovation.
As a response to the specific brief, our massing design was based on a notion of passing on the tradition (existing renovation) and fostering innovation (expansion). The main focus of the scehem were an inclusion of natural environment, alkability and permeability, and preparation for future development.
