In educated circles across the country IIT Kharagpur soon became a household name as a torch bearer of scientific knowledge. Each IIT pursued the common goal of excellence in its own way. IIT Kharagpur was created based on the principles of fairness, justice and dedication with a clear and lofty sense of purpose. It is the largest technical institution in India and ranked the best institution in the country imparting technical education and research.

Entrepreneurship awareness drive 2013

08

The Entrepreneurship Awareness Drive (EAD) 2013 consisted of a series of Guest Lectures and Workshops in 20 cities, in 20 days, in the month of October. Each city played host to an Entrepreneurship Awareness Camp, where eminent entrepreneurs and industry leaders counseled students about the pros and cons of entrepreneurship as a career and how it differs from the usual run-of-themill job culture that has existed till now. EAD has come a long way since it’s inception 5 years ago and has seen the number of cities grow from 10 to 20 and an audience of 13,000. Thus, EAD, a one of a kind student body initiative managed to reach out to a large faction of the student community and helped in promoting the spirit of entrepreneurship among them. About 25% of the entries in our Business Plan Competition Empresario were from participants of EAD, which underlines the impact of this unique initiative towards motivating the young minds towards entrepreneurial thought and action. 108 colleges were represented in EAD 2013, with 20 colleges associating with us to conduct the EAD in their respective campus. During the drive, many colleges expressed their interest in setting up entrepreneurship promoting bodies for the benefit of their

students. Activities have been initiated to set up EDCs or E-Cells in such colleges with Entrepreneurship Cell, IIT Kharagpur as their mentor. The campus ambassadors appointed from each associate college received due recognition from Entrepreneurship Cell, IIT Kharagpur in the form of certificates. Thus, a healthy network has been developed between a large number of colleges and Entrepreneurship Cell, IIT Kharagpur, which is important for spreading awareness about entrepreneurship across the entire country. Although EAD 2013 was held in 20 cities, it was designed to create a national impact and buzz about entrepreneurship. All the city-wise Entrepreneurship Awareness Camps as well as the entire campaign as a whole was extensively publicized through online and offline media channels. Articles appeared in leading dailies like the Telegraph, radio channels and also on online media channels as well as on the websites of other prominent entrepreneurship promoting bodies. EAD was also covered by CNBC-TV18. The event was also publicized through our Twitter and Facebook page, which is the most active page of any entrepreneurship promoting body in India, with more than 30.000 likes and 2000 monthly active users.

global entrepreneurship summit 2014

12

Taking the spirit of Entrepreneurship to new heights, this year Entrepreneurship Cell, IIT Kharagpur organized Global Entrepreneurship Summit (10th to 12th January 2014). Over the years, GES has witnessed the speaking aura of various eminent personalities. The opening ceremony of GES was conducted at Kalidas Auditorium, IIT Kharagpur, where many IIT Kharagpur dignitaries including Prof. Partha Pratim Chakrabarti, Director IIT Kharagpur, Prof. Indranil Sen Gupta, Managing Director, STEP and Prof. Partha Pratim Das, Head, Rajendra Mishra School of Engineering Entrepreneurship enlightened the participants with their words of wisdom. The welcome note was delivered by Prof. Indranil Sen Gupta. He spoke about spirit of entrepreneurship and how it is benefiting the nation as a whole. The welcome note was followed by lamp-lighting ceremony by all the dignitaries and guests of honors. The opening note was delivered by Prof. Partha Pratim Chakrabarti, Drector of IIT Kharagpur. He provided the participants with an insight into the life of Prof. Rajendra Mishra, one of the founders of IIT Kharagpur in 1951. The opening ceremony also witnessed a dedication ceremony for RMSoEE where Mr. Amrendra Mishra, son of Prof. Rajendra Mishra, graced us with their presence. Dr. Amarendra Mishra shared their valuable experiences with the students. The keynote address was delivered by Mr. Avinash Vashistha, Chairman and Geography Managing Director of Accenture India. He is an undergraduate from IIT Kanpur,

a master’s in Computer Science from the University of Alberta and an MBA from Arizona. He started his talk by describing Entrepreneurship as the Art of Taking Risks. He emphasized on the importance of vision among Entrepreneurs and explained how agility and presence of mind comes in handy. He urged students to plan big and to be clear with their long-term goals. He stressed on the power of networking and briefly explained how it comes above all the technical stuff and domain knowledge and also clearly stated that commitment is required for any kind of success. Having traversed a long journey to reach the top and having faced all the ups and downs he advised the youth to have conviction and perseverance and to be focused towards their goal and not to give up at any point of time. He explained the difference between an entrepreneur and a businessman and how an entrepreneur is willing to take risks and is always concerned but never worried about the risks. Independence is big difference between a business and a start-up and the courage to take big decisions is required since we are not accountable to anybody but ourselves in a start-up. This is the same reason why he considers working in a growing firm/start-up more important for an entrepreneur than working in a big MNC. Ending his talk on a motivational note, Mr. Vashistha wished the students the very best of luck for their future and advised them stay to positive against all odds.

Nothing ever gets built without an idea first. And start-ups are no different: they start with a simple thought, a small idea. But what’s next? That idea then needs to be developed into a product and into a business. For that to happen, any start-up naturally moves through a number of stages in its life-cycle. Amazon Web Services (AWS) has helped many successful startups throughout this life-cycle. This workshop on Lean Startup provided an overview of the start-up lifecycle and explained the benefits of the adopting the right infrastructure services in each stage. It guided through why and how to build your start-up on AWS. People got a chance to interact 1-on-1 with Solution Architects and AWS experts to deep-dive into your specific architecture.

ideation- Tech mahindra This workshop on Ideation consisted of an idea’s framework that helped participants, first get an idea, second validate them, third develop them and the last stage, test them in a real world environment. The programs focused on developing ideation and innovation skills of young people and give them an opportunity to work on some real challenge faced by their community, especially youth and women in the areas of education, energy, agriculture, health, water and livelihood. It was designed to train the participants on the idea’s framework so as to harness their innovation skills and create solutions that positively impact the target community with the use of technology.

Startup Services Program is an initiative by E-Cell, IIT Kharagpur. It aims to aid the fledgling start-ups of IIT Kharagpur in terms of providing them certain required business services. Starting-up can be a tricky business. It requires a great deal of effort, will, perseverance on the part of the founders along with plenty of resources. Most of the start-ups die out and shut down because of paucity of quality services required at the opportune time. Advice on legal, taxation, financial, technical aspects of running a startup, co-working space, HR needs etc. are just a few things which a startup requires post inception. A startup usually faces constant financial crunch in its early stages. To help them in their endeavors, this initiative has been launched wherein these start-ups are provided certain free/discounted services to reduce their financial burden. It is expected that this will encourage more and more students to take up the path of entrepreneurship and IIT Kharagpur will see an unprecedented rise in the number of entrepreneurs being produced in the institute. The benefits under this program are limited only to IIT Kharagpur student and alumni start-ups. Some of the services which we'll be providing under this program are: Co-Working Space in Delhi/Gurgaon Legal and Taxation consultancy for startups Video-shoot, editing, ad jingle, montage creation Mobile UI/UX designing, Web Designing, Digital Marketing and Analytics consultancy.
