HONOURING EXELLENCE IN WATER INNOVATION PROFESSOR JOHN ANTHONY CHERRY Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize 2016 Laureate The highlight of Singapore International Water Week (SIWW), the Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize honours outstanding contributions towards solving global water issues through developing or applying innovative technologies, policies or programmes that benefit humanity. The prestigious international award is named after Singapore’s first Prime Minister, Mr Lee Kuan Yew, whose foresight and leadership has aided Singapore in attaining a sustainable water supply. Professor John Anthony Cherry, world-renowned hydrogeologist, was awarded the Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize 2016 for his contributions and influence in groundwater management, and lifelong dedication to the protection of groundwater resources. Groundwater is a major source of water for many countries around the world, constituting 95% of usable freshwater in the planet. His revolutionary research in collaboration with international partners has provided the global groundwater community with a better scientific framework to formulate policies and best practices. Professor Cherry has been a major influence in advancing global recognition of groundwater processes and the development of better field methods for groundwater contamination. Professor John Anthony Cherry will deliver the Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize Lecture on 11 July 2016, 6.30pm - 9.30pm at The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore. China Business Forum China Business Forum Tuesday, 12 July 2016 Expo Hall D, Basement 2, Sands Expo & Convention Centre China’s sustained economic growth has left an indelible mark on the global economic outlook. Facing a seemingly inevitable economic slowdown, China’s 13th Five-Year plan aims at steering the world’s second largest economy towards a new stage of development – the “New Normal”. With a GDP target of around 6.5% set for the next five years, economic reform along with sustainable and inclusive growth have been identified as two key focus areas. The private sector is poised to take on a greater role in economic growth and resource efficiency. China’s Belt and Road Initiative is also expected to stimulate regional infrastructure development. Recognising the threat that environmental degradation poses to its economic goals, China is emphasizing on water and environmental sustainability to elevate the quality of life. To this end, the Chinese government has rolled out initiatives including Sponge Cities and a major revision of the Environmental Protection Law. This Business Forum will delve deeper into the challenges and opportunities of China’s New Normal, and offer insights into what these could mean for the industry players, professionals and individuals keen on the Chinese market.

Latin America Business Forum Latin America Business Forum Wednesday, 13 July 2016 Grand Ballroom D, Level 5, Sands Expo & Convention Centre By 2050, Latin America is projected to grow to 750 million inhabitants, with UN-Habitat projecting that 90% of these inhabitants will be living in cities. To cater to this trend of increasing urbanisation, investments in infrastructure in Latin America and the Caribbean have been gaining momentum in the past few years; for instance, Chile, Brazil, Peru, Mexico, and Colombia top the list of the most welcoming countries for PPPs in the region1. Externally, Latin America countries have been cultivating relationships between the region and the rest of the world to facilitate trade and investment opportunities2. This Latin America Business Forum aims to bring together leaders of the region to share on the urban, water, and environmental challenges faced, as well as the upcoming trade opportunities available to address these issues. The forum will look at some of Latin America’s largest economies: Brazil, Mexico and Colombia. The Mexican government’s 2014-2018 National Infrastructure Plan will see public and private investments in infrastructure reach US$590 billion, adding between 1.8 and 2 percentage points to Mexico’s growth rates by 20183. The Brazilian government has announced a new list of planned infrastructure concessions worth US$55 billion to be auctioned off to private sector companies. The Colombian government is aggressively pursuing investments in infrastructure and has announced a US$70 billion infrastructure plan to 2035, including an ambitious Fourth Generation (4G) road infrastructure programme, the largest of its kind in Latin America4. Business leaders familiar with this region will be sharing market trends, opportunities, their experiences and views on doing business in these countries and sectors. http://infrascope.fomin.org http://www.latamcham.org/?page_id=57 http://www.iesingapore.gov.sg/Venture-Overseas/ Browse-By-Market/Americas/Mexico/Country-Information 4 http://www.theworldfolio.com/files/file/report-56bb1f665531e.pdf 1 2 3

India Business Forum India Business Forum Wednesday, 13 July 2016 Expo Hall D, Basement 2, Sands Expo & Convention Centre Come 2030, 40% of India’s population will be living in urban areas and contributing to 75% of GDP. An estimated 400 million are expected to migrate to cities over this period. To meet the challenges that these changes will raise – the pressure it will put on basic services, infrastructure, utilities and the environment – India needs to build new cities, retrofit existing ones, and create new jobs over the next two decades. The World Bank estimates that India can expect a growth of over 7%, which puts India ahead of China; the world’s No. 2 economy after the U.S. India’s government is already making a start to balance its economic growth with sustainable development. Recognising that urban centres are engines of growth and employment, India has launched three mega schemes, i.e., Smart Cities Mission, Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), and Housing for All. These will set in motion the process of urban transformation to enable a rejuvenated framework of physical, social, economic and institutional infrastructure development. Every Smart City will have six main characteristics – a smart economy, smart mobility, a smart environment, smart living, smart citizens and smart governance. The Housing for All scheme seeks to address India’s commitment to inclusive, sustainable, and affordable homes for its ever growing urban population. The Clean India Mission aims to accomplish the vision of sanitation and solid waste management. Projects planned under AMRUT – water supply, waste management and sewerage, urban transport, social sectors such as healthcare and education, and affordable housing to improve the quality of life for all – will also provide many project opportunities under the public-private partnership model. The National Mission for Clean Ganga aims to ensure effective abatement of pollution and rejuvenation of the river Ganga and to maintain minimum ecological flows in the river Ganga. This forum will inquire India’s onset investment towards its development aspirations, and the synergic business opportunities that are made available as a result of India’s impending growth and its cities of opportunity. Desalination and Water Reuse Business Forum Desalination and Water Reuse Business Forum Wednesday, 13 July 2016 Expo Hall D, Basement 2, Sands Expo & Convention Centre Desalination and reuse technologies ride one of the most dynamic growth trends in the future of water supply. With the water reuse being a fast-growing segment of the $50 billion wastewater sector, while the annual global capital expenditure for desalination expected to double from $2.8 billion to over a whopping $5 billion by 2020 , the global outlook is brimming with bold advancements. Buoyed by ongoing developments and emerging energy efficient technologies, desalination and reuse is becoming a viable additional source of water. This is particularly beneficial in regions prone to drought conditions and scarce rainfall, or where access to freshwater is a challenge. Similarly, the rise of effluent being viewed as a precious resource has spurred the growth of the reuse market with wide-ranging impact on the wastewater technology market. This paradigm shift has sparked growing interest in membrane bioreactor technologies and the adoption of MBR plants globally, particularly in rapidly industrialising countries like China. The Desalination and Water Reuse Business Forum is jointly organised between PUB and the International Desalination Association, to provide a platform for utilities and technology leaders to gather and share interesting business opportunities and latest technology trend in the desalination and water reuse markets.
