Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize
Honouring outstanding contributions towards solving global water problems
Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize 2011 laureate, Dr James L. Barnard
Prize Sponsor:
The Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize 2011 is presented to Dr James L. Barnard for his invention of the Biological Nutrient Removal (BNR) technology to remove nitrogen and phosphorus from used water. His technology uses naturally-occurring micro-organisms to remove these nutrients and allows the treated used water to be safely returned to rivers and lakes. BNR is widely regarded as one of the most important innovations in used water treatment of recent times. Dr Barnard’s discovery and development of BNR has yielded positive benefits in protecting water resources and the communities that depend on them. Dr Barnard will deliver the Singapore Water Lecture at Singapore International Water Week 2011. About the Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize The highlight of Singapore International Water Week, the Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize honours outstanding contributions towards solving global water problems by either applying technologies or implementing policies and programmes which benefit humanity. This prestigious international award is named after Singapore’s former Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew, who championed the development of Singapore’s water sustainability efforts.

Business Forums According to the Global Water Intelligence’s Global Water Market Report 2011, global water markets are valued at more than US$500 billion in 2010. The key growth engines of capital expenditure on water and wastewater infrastructure and industrial treatment equipment are set to grow annually at 5.6% – 7.5% until 2016. The Business Forums will offer valuable insights into the business opportunities in the America, Australia, China, Europe, India, Japan, Middle East & North Africa and Southeast Asia.
An Oasis of Opportunities in the Business of Water
China Business Forum – 6 July, 2pm

The Chinese market is expected to continue its exponential growth of over 10% per year under the upcoming 12th five-year plan (Year 2011 - Year 2015). The Chinese government is expected to double its investments, especially in the wastewater and water recycling sector, with total investments estimated to exceed RMB150 billion.
Australia’s water sector has undergone a restructuring in terms of leadership, policies, and regulatory framework in the midst of managing major water-related natural challenges, ranging from extreme droughts to severe floods. Australia Business Forum 2011 explores these aspects under the theme “Adapting to Change”. Find out more about how Australia is dealing with climate variability and where Australia is positioning itself in the global water business.
Japan Business Forum – 6 July, 2pm Japan Business Forum 2011 presents Japan’s proven and cutting-edge water solutions to the international water market; a trend set to continue based on its robust R&D investments in the sector. Eminent international business partners from both public and private sectors will provide insights and comprehensive solutions, and foster partnerships to seize opportunities in Japan and international water markets.
Southeast Asia Business Forum – 6 July, 2pm The Southeast Asia Business Forum 2011 provides a platform for the public sector or government leaders to update their counterparts on the water situation of their respective countries, enable the public and private sector gain a better understanding of each other’s needs and provide a “buyerseller” matching opportunity for water-related projects in Southeast Asia.

A developing nation with a large population and limited access to fresh water resources, India requires massive investment in municipal water supply systems and wastewater treatment plants for its growing cities and rural population.
Americas Business Forum – 7 July, 2pm The water infrastructure gap in the United States is estimated at US$300US$500 billion. In Canada, the government has rolled out a slew of legislative efforts, which includes the introduction of the “Water Opportunities and Water Conservation Act” in Ontario, and new Federal wastewater treatment regulations to prevent pollutive discharge to waterways and protect fresh water supplies. Compliance with such new regulations is expected to generate C$10-C$15 billion worth of business. South America also offers tremendous development and project opportunities as they strive to enhance their water and wastewater infrastructure.
Middle East & North Africa Business Forum – 7 July, 2pm
Europe Business Forum
According to the Global Water Intelligence report on the Water Market Middle East 2010, the average water footprint – i.e. direct and indirect water consumption per head, is 11.6% higher than the global average.
