Inside Six Senses Zighy Bay| May-June, 2013 Know Your Fish ~ Stingray These docile, yet threatened fish often get a bad rap because of the

poisonous barb on its outstretched spine. But these gentle creatures often swim harmoniously with divers and will only strike if threatened. They weren’t always feared, as Ancient Greek dentists used the venom from the stingray's spine as an anesthetic.

If left uninterrupted, stingrays can live 15 – 25 years and grow up to two metres in length. You can spot them often in shallow areas, resting and camouflaged in the sandy bottom. Their favorite meals are mollusks, and, like their relative the shark, they use electrical sensors called ampullae of Lorenzini. Located around the stingray's mouth, these organs sense the natural electrical charges of potential prey. Keep an eye out for the Southern and Cowtail Stingrays while snorkelling or diving in Oman!

Shuffle your feet in the sand when entering the Bay so as not to step on a resting stingray.

Beat the Heat ~ Organic Mocktails from the Garden The heat of the summer is here, and will stay with us for the next few months.

Luckily, we have many options to break the mid-day warmth: more than 30 ice cream and sorbet flavours; ice-water mineralized on-site at the resort’s reverse osmosis plant; a wide selection of organic mocktails, made fresh to order! Zighy Bar Supervisor Manoj Mohanan has prepared two unique summer splashes guaranteed to quench your thirst in-between dips in the pool: Tropical Limit

Try a Tropical Limit the next time the sun chases you indoor.

Ingredients (yields 1 serving):  5 – 10 whole mint leaves  1 small lime, quartered  5 oz. organic pineapple juice  crushed ice

Directions:  Muddle the mint and lime at the bottom of a tall glass.  Add pineapple juice.  Top with crushed ice.  Garnish with mint and lime ~ enjoy!

Sunny Satisfaction Ingredients (yields 1 serving):  1 whole stalk of lemongrass  1 passion fruit  5 oz. organic orange juice  crushed ice

Marhaba, Manoj Mohanan. That Sunny Satisfaction sure looks nourishing!

Directions:  Muddle the lemongrass at the bottom of a tall glass.  Add the essence and seeds of the passion fruit and the orange juice.  Top with crushed ice.  Garnish with orange ~ enjoy!

Mohan also recommends adding ginger to either of the coolers. Add 2-3 slices of fresh ginger and muddle with the other ingredients. Director of Spa and Wellness Steve Harvey adds, “Ginger is excellent to aide in digestion. It is also a natural antiinflammatory, and can help as a substitute to medication; try it if your head aches. Add ginger to your daily intake, but in moderation. Don’t exceed 4g of ginger per day, and pregnant ladies should avoid any more than 1g daily.”
