Watch This Space Launching next month is the GCC’s very first salt-water pool! Measuring 35 x 25 metres in length and a maximum depth of 1.4 metres, the saltwater is currently being created at the south end of the resort with easy access to the al Feetean (teenage) club, Jungle Gym, Tennis court and Shua Shack area. Only metres from the bay’s shores, the pool will use water filtered through the resort’s reverse osmosis (RO) plant, used to mineralize all of the drinking water in the resort. The pool is part of the resort’s environmental commitment, as no chemicals will be necessary to treat the water. The concentration of the salt level will be between 15 % – 20 % by contrast to the Dead Sea measuring 27 %. The resort plans to integrate use of the pool with its Wellness Programmes, as studies show the salt water can help to ease pain with osteoarthritis patients and is also used for natural detoxification. Future plans for watsu and thalassotherapy treatments are in the works.

A ‘Date’ to Remember
Did you know that we have over 1,100 date palms throughout our resort, producing over 12 varietals of dates? AND that they are hand pollinated by our landscaping and gardening team? In February after the trees blossom the male flowers are collected and bound together in bunches, placed inside the refrigerator for protection, and to impede the maturation process. The male flowers will be mixed with female flowers for pollination on a sunny day without wind. Two months after pollination the color of dates will change from green to yellow, orange or red (according to the varietal) before turning to brown or black. When 50 % of the date bunch ripens to brown or black in a tree, it indicates that it is ready for harvest. When the dates are ripened it also signifies the heat of the summer is at its highest and will soon subside. First the dates are sorted from edible or inedible. Then they are washed and dried independently under the sun to evaporate the natural water, drawing out the sugar. High quality dry dates are collected and stored in a plastic container to stop the ripening process, and sent to the kitchen for guests and hosts. The remaining dates will be kept a few more days to dry before being packed in poly-sacked bags for animal feed. Most of the feed is traded with the Zighy Village for the goat manure used in the organic garden. The date harvest is currently ongoing in Zighy Bay. You can enjoy a local date scrub at the Spa or bespoke five course Date Night in the Wine Cellar during this unique time of year.
