LACE FOR ALL

When discussion turned to publishing another book of Vogue Knitting patterns, it seemed all too obvious that lace should be the theme this time around. It is such a beloved technique among us knitters, and for good reason. Knitting a lace project is fun, addictive, and so satisfying as you watch the pattern grow from your needles. Furthermore, some of the most stunning designs to appear in the pages of Vogue Knitting have been lace projects that still leave me breathless.

When hearing the word “lace,” many immediately conjure up in their minds images of delicate, lightweight shawls worked in the classic intricate patterns we all know and love. While such projects are a prime example and an important part of knitting history, lace is more diverse than many realize. So, when selecting patterns for this collection—which was a difficult task due to the sheer number of gorgeous options—we did our best to include a range of project types, skill levels, and approaches to highlight the endless potential of what lace can be.

From an easy-wear stockinette pullover with a lace yoke (see page 17) to a generously sized wrap with three columns of flowing openwork (see page 55), lace can be a powerful design element. Whether a complex design worked across a large shawl (see page 69) or several simple eyelet repeats (see page 75), lace’s effectiveness is not bound by scale or complexity. Worked sparsely across a simple accessory (see page 85) or fearlessly knitted as separate motifs to be joined later (see page 87), lace is limited only by the range of our own imaginations.

This collection of 40 patterns represents some of the most stunning work found in the pages of Vogue Knitting, and there is something for every knitter to enjoy. If you are new to or not quite confident with lace, start simple with an accessory or a garment with a lace insert. If you are looking for a challenge, cast on for a large shawl or an intricate pullover. No matter your skill level or personal style, lace is a technique that all can enjoy.
