Anywayz as the editor I gotta say it’s been another interesting quarter and then some as the Trinbago car scene seems to be evolving and devolving both at the same time. So much so that the quote above kinda reflects how I personally feel about the direction not only with motorsport but actually with the ENTIRE automotive landscape right now. As good as it has gotten to some degree, in a kinda way it still sucks. It’s weird still seeing men making the same mistakes when it comes to doing a project as most did ages ago. The level of back biting, toting, chest burn and destructive kutchur is on a whole next level. The current motorsport administration blows chunks. Car makers are not building easy to work on cars for the real enthusiasts anymore. I still can’t legally import and license a 180sx, Evo 4 and 3rd gen. RX7 to complete the collection. The long term current project still on jackstands due to shifting priorities, it have more posers on the street than real speed men and the list of bad just seems goes on and on and on. BUT as bleak as things may seem, it always brings me back seeing those the REALLY, REALLY rep the core of what this thing is supposed to be despite all the BS. The community is actually growing by the looks of things, there are quite a few car clubs forming in the mix, a couple of Trini’s doing it big on the outside and breaking records, there has been a resurgence of rotary anything as of late especially old school RE, RX and 1st gen. projects. Men putting SR in anything as usual, both Subaru and Evo communities making strides, RESPONSIBLE speed is still fun and I can go on and on and on. But in the mix of everything, as perfect as I would like to see things I actually wouldn’t have it anyother way. Meh - enuff of the rambles - lewwe get on with the show nuh. Linzi

The alternate days to ease traffic idea During a traffic reduction consultation hosted by the Transport Ministry, this retired Superintendent of Police had the BRILLIANT utterance that to ease the traffic in T&T 50% of vehicles need to come off the road. His idea - to have alternate use depending on licence plate numbers - even plates today, odd plates tomorrow. Thank GOD this man no longer employed with the police cuz that says something about the police before, during, after and now. Not only was the notion outdated, impractical, unworkable, unfair and depressing, but it’s definitely going to cost MORE to ATTEMPT to implement. The way we see it, if that’s going to be the train let’s have turbo & non turbo days; why not male & female; hell, we could try local cars & foreign used.

The WAR of WHEELS

It was exactly that when BinStuntin Promotions pulled out all the stops on what can only be described as a killer of tires and smoke creation burn fest. Held at the Center of Excellence back which was lit, the real chaos didn’t start till evening time as during the day was scorching; but Jah Jah no partial; when it did, the crowd ah people who were on hand to witness the spectacle were buzzed to the edge of their seats. Seeing harmony between everything wheeled was sick. The riding displays from (2) foreign riders i.e. Joey T and Sick was banga hard; a host of local riders killed it as well including T&T’s very own Mad Max, Yaseen Sidat and Team Rockstar nation. Lyndon; who is not normal, did it different when he removed the front wheel of his bike to do a wheelie - it didn’t go according to plan at first. But the resulting wipe out was entertaining. The flatland BMX riders did some killer tricks that many never thought possible with a bicycle and last but not least were the representing drifters in Team R/R Performance, Team 3D Car Care with Duane Bann and Team DWO including Marzden Taylor & Kerry Phillip who more than made their presence felt in the festivities by doing a coordinated drift display not only with everybody but the bikes as well. Heading well into the night the event ended of with an epic mashup of everybody creating clouds of chilli smoke that made sure tires were dead. But, Slick Nick copped the title for best burn when he slew a set of Shinko Smoke Bombs to within an inch of it’s life and released enough blue smoke to signal a plane. Oh and the tandem burn of Team DWO cannot be ignored.

Tobago having ting, so it’s only fitting that men across the waters in the sister isle get to showoff their cornering skillz. That was the situation when Autosport came together with Radio Tamarind to put on Motor Maniacs. A full 2 day stir fry chock full of cars & bike displays, BMX, RC planes, drifting with Team DWO, sound off and over the water leg of the popular Drag & Wind Series. Held at the Dwight Yorke Stadium for the 2nd year, it was 50+ cars (25+ from Trini; the ress from ‘bago) going head to head and while we can’t cover everybody it can safely be said that the ‘bago men could jive. Saturday was qualifiers and cool; but Sunday was turnt out in front of a full contingent of supporters. a person could pass thru more cars of the same brand in a few years than some people do in their entire lifetime you have yourself a person that’s very haunted. That’s describes Vedesh Maharaj who is on his 8th Honda Civic - yep 8th. We dunno if he’s all out insane or toting a chain but his love for the H is undeniable, especially this one which is a culmination of what his perfect whip was supposed to be. Aimed as the second half of twins, his brother owning the 1st half, Vedesh got this EK4 SiR from a brethren on work. Bone stock from birth and maintained by the said brother, Vedesh knew what he was getting when the manual converted car came up for sale and since he was already buying parts and putting down long before the car came into the picture, by the time it did t’was just to slap on things and make the vision a reality.

as the LS VTEC it’s an affair between a stock B20 block from a RD1 CRV and the non VTEC head being replaced with that from a B16A which was shaved to raise the compression. Sandwiched together with ARP head bolts and Cometic headgasket, the LS got B18C Type R cams and valvetrain, Arospeed adjustable cam gears, Skunk2 Pro Series intake manifold, 70mm throttle body, Hondata intake manifold gasket and Megan racing headers. Starting at 2:00pm by the time 12:00am breezed around, the engine was bolted in by the team, wired up by Mikey with the P28 chipped ECU running CROME and a MSD blaster coil amping de spark and purring like a snoring goliath. The clutch was stir fried with a 9lb flywheel, ACT 6 puk copper with spring and ACT heavy duty. And to make it a proper convert, all the engine accessories bought at Top Quality Japan Used Parts in the bamboo were thrown in.

The day the car was rolling up a small team of partners was like ants over sour mango attacking the stock B16 to get it out so that a casually built B20 grooved together by Eddie Awker from Mech Tech and tweaked over by Vedesh’s brother Rajeev could go in. Known in the Honda world

During the next few, additional mods continued to peg on like puttygyal,;the exhaust was upgraded to 2 ½” mandrel straight pipe by Blue’s Muffler Shop. Because of more aspiration the fuel system was upgraded to an AEM high pressure fuel pump, high flow fuel rail, FPR and a used set of Evo 4

550cc. Making the car wrap corners better, the suspension was tapped with Skunk2 short struts, Tein S Techs, Skunk2 front camber kit, BWR rear camber kit & lower control arms and DC2 Type R front & rear upper strut bars. Brakes were blazed over with RD1 CRVs which were a direct boltup and much needed considering that after Joshua from Mech Tech hit first tune, the B20 stank with 181 whp & 138 lb*tq. That’s more than enough to have the the Buddy Club rims he got from another partner;Damien Allum, reeling especially with the VTEC kicking in at 4000rpm and screaming all the way to 8700rpm. Now, considering most men who do a Frank like this don’t go past 7500rpm, 8700rpm is a feat but according to Vedesh it’s all in the tune and we could understand that. The next goal is to hit that golden 250 NA style and eat up boosted men like pressure cooked provision. So bet your top dollar that plans are already in the pipes for a full do over including forged out block, more head work, cams and endless wiffings of the joy juice, which as we all know makes life better. Getting a ticket sucks. But getting a ticket AND going to court not only sucks but it gargles, blows, swallows and spits. About 3 years ago; the 23rd November 2012 to be exact, I was wailed with a ticket for parking on the government pavement also known as a footpath. Now; for the record, I wasn’t and I have the pictures to PROVE it. But despite my very respectful protest and objective arguments that where I was parked could in no way be considered the footpath PC Sampson (No 184*3) wasn’t hearing me. I dunno if he was trying to impress somebody, was having a moment, didn’t get any the night before or was trying to make quota, but with crapaud foot handwriting he slap me with a $1000.00. Just seeing that figure alone made me vomit thru my baffleplate. Unno what I could do with $1000 in my coil, daiz downpayment on my management. Shocked, nauseous, angry and bitter I looked at the officer with an unprecedented level of scorn and disdain akin to a child watching a sink full of wares to wash; grinded my teeth, held in the profanity and disgustingly said “I will see you in court; I not taking this ticket!” Needless to say he wasn’t bothered in the least which made me madder. Now listen me; I have gotten tickets before and 99% of the time I look for it; your boy take a chance and get caught. That’s just the nature of the game. But this time - THIS time, I was in the right and based on what I was taught about life how can I be punished for being right - right. Right. Since I wasn’t paying a dime for injustice, I let the 14 days to pay pass and it was onto the court day scheduled 5th February 2013. In between that time I had a titanic amount of counsel from many people; alot of whom went thru the EXACT same thing and EVERYBODY was harping the same chorus in my ears. “Just pay the ticket nah” or “You sure you want to go thru with this”. Hell I even had some offer to pay the ticket for me. Eff dat; I want my day in court; I want to feel up Lady Justice leg and tell her how much I love her, I want to win one for the poor man as it wasn’t about the money but the principle. However, as I came to learn and rather abruptly, there’s the fantasy about “justice” and the reality about “justice” and on the day I had to go to court for the first time I got hit hard with the brutal reality that justice is just an imaginary word used to make people who don’t know better about this system. Reaching into the waiting area early, as I sat on that hard bench with no armrest inside the Couva Magistrate’s just benning and in looking at the last chance sign saying I could pay at the counter, my mind started asking whether or not I should do this. You could say that I started having second thoughts. But, badmind kick in pronto, there’s no way I’m letting that officer get away with what he did. That piece of chain seal it, I recommitted under absolute to NOT PAYING that ticket. I want justice - right is right,;wrong is wrong and I WASN’T wrong!

people have been so desensitized from dealing with the globules of BS that happens in this judicial circus on a daily basis that they’re on edge right thru. Anyways; you walk in the courtroom, take a seat and you wait. And you wait. And you wait for your matter to be called - whenever it’s called. In my case that was 2 ½ hours later. I calmly rose from the gallery with evidence in hand, swaggered into the whatever, confidence beaming. “How do you plead?” ­- “NOT GUILTY your honor and I have pic……” - “No sir, today is not for that, matter postponed till the XYZ.” Mentally I was like WTF in astonishment; 2 1/2 hours of my life waiting just to hear in 2 minutes that my matter postponed because I was still in the summons/ hearing stage. Mayyyyyyyyybe this wasn’t such a good idea. And I was right, ­4 postponements and level wasted time later spanning the rest of the 2013, each time having to go thru the same wait, wait, plead process but with a different judge each time. The matter was FINALLY given a trial date in 2014 which is when I gets to actually prove my case and present the evidence. However, because the officer never came to court the magistrate threw out the case for lack of prosecution and that left me bitter. Why you ask? Simple. See, the actual ticket cost was $1000.00 but in reality I paid about 4 times that by just going to court to fight the ticket that I shouldn’t have gotten in the first place. And then to be denied the opportunity to face and decimate the Sampson who put me thru all this malarky just made it worse. If you check time, the constant back and forth, loss days of work, stress, gas, being made to feel like a felon, hiring a lawyer (optional) and all the other nittys, going to court is outright counterproductive to common sense. And then for the boops to not show; even when I HAVE to, else is contempt and warrant in my gaza is even MORE insulting. As I sat outside, after a YEAR of the bulups, my mind reminisced to another one of my skirmishes where I was CLEARLY deserving and the officer said “Breds is either you pay the ticket or you contest it, your choice. But know that if you go to court you going to pay more, especially if you lose”. I never took him seriously and always thought he was trying to inject me with needles so that I won’t challenge it and give him unnecessary paper work. However, in looking at the bigger picture he was right, I may have ducked $1000 up front but on the back hand I did paid more.

If you’re right legally and principally, before you go to court think about the pull stones system you’re going to face and whether or not you want to deal with the rubbish & inconvenience.

Just being in the waiting area alone showed me that court and the quest for justice is the single most disgusting experience ANY PERSON can put himself/ herself thru. Imagine being in a place where nobody is happy unless you check the lawyers and court staff. Inside, there is no such thing as innocent; it’s guilty from the word go and the officers of the court treat you with a hidden level of apathy that’s pure fowl. It’s as if the

Now, after reading all this you might be asking me what to do if ever a joe-key ticket is in your lap. The answer is simple - ­it kinda depends. Everything boils down to doing your VERY BEST to avoid getting a ticket in the first place OR doing everything legally or legally in your power including HARD begging to get out of said ticket. Personally, I not giving any officer the satisfaction, so begging ah bligh like a slave to massa is OUT of the question for me, but that’s just me. With that said, if you’re right on principle but legally wrong, go pay and look at it as a contribution to the coffers of the State. If you are right legally and principally think about the poo-har system you’re going to face and whether or not you want to deal with the rubbish as well as the expense and inconvenience.;If you can, then let out that rebel spirit and by all means go and jam them, chit is chit. But if you can’t;;depending on the amount, just pay it and move on with the experience knowing that you just get legally robbed by a system that is designed to do just that rather than protect as it’s supposed to.

Nicknamed the Big Pomp, this Mazda Familia 323 is swicked enough to turn carambo into carajo and started out as a regular BJ sedan from Singapore with 15” rims, chrome bumper guards, cold breeze, 1500cc ZL engine under auto and leather seats. Yes we know - don’t say it. And while normally there is no excuse we would accept for getting something like that, it was somewhat of his 2003 post wedding gift to himself and the family so we will let it slide. Plus mama had to drive it too nah. The upside though, not that it counts for anything, was at the time the Familia was considered to be one of the freshest cars in Point but the Sixth doesn’t deal up in fresh, daiz for the fish market. Is only pace we ah ramp with and pace came when Pompy got a dread shining on the Mosquito Creek at about 11:00pm in 2006. There he was moving, foot through the floor on the stretch and a Nissan Almera walk past him as if he was constipated. Watching a ‘mera pass you when you all out is disrespectful and although Pompy wanted to put the Nissan in place the 1.5 just didn’t have it. Had that been us we wudda drive the Mazda in the ocean brisk and say that we get rob, BUT not the Pompers. He felt the burn and the need to go faster fall een one time. Exactly one week after the creek incident which we promised not to reveal to anyone, Pompy found himself by Khan’s Auto Garage in Point where a pretty simple but devious plan was hatched and harnessed; just pelt some boost on the 1500cc as is. So 8 pounds of blessings from a RB20 T28 blowing air thru a 24 x 9 x 3 intercooler and down the gully of the ZL engine. Managed by a SAFC tuned by Prentice at Peak Performance, the lil ting werked but the novelty of a boosted 1.5 automatic wore off pretty quickly and while the thoughts of putting in an SR didn’t enter his mind, Pompy wanted to remain true to the roots and the brand. After some enquiring he met

much as 1 1/2 pound extra or roughly (3) 20oz cokes. With aluminum you cut that weight by almost 50%. Couple that with additional weight savings e.g. via lightweight rims, tires, etc and you can get better acceleration, better braking and better handling since the unsprung weight, i.e. weight that is not supported by the suspension of the car is less. And if you want us to get scientific; lighter objects need less time to change speed by a given amount under a given force, meaning it takes less effort to move a lighter object but this isn’t an article about weight and performance.

Here’s the PROBLEM

The thing that makes aluminum so great is also the thing that is its downfall and here is where we going to get DEEP. See, all if not MOST lightweight lugs tend to be made out from some GRADE of 7000 series aluminum alloy called 7075. On it’s own 7075 is a mix of aluminum and other metals e.g. zinc, magnesium, copper, silicon, iron, manganese, titanium, chromium, that’s tempered; which is a process used to used to increase the toughness of iron based alloys. Depending on the mix and the tempering process, you get different alloy grades like 7075-0, 7075-T6, 7075-651. And each grade carries with it a different set of characteristics that dictates the use as well as how it responds to heat and how well it is able to resist getting weak when put under pressure not to mention price. Furious stickers, at another it was full on spoilers and so on. This rounds the product of choice for mass abuse is skittle colored “lightweight” aluminum wheel nuts and the level of buffoonery surrounding not only their purpose BUT their benefits is on another level. Alot of people are installing aluminum lugs without taking the time to understand what it is they are getting into and when trouble hits the fan they are in an uproar and quick to pass judgement. It’s always our job to educate so as we always say open them ears, clean out the wax and get some overstanding.

Sixth what the nuts for?

Since inception, the PURPOSE of a lug nut hasn’t changed much and that’s to keep the wheel attached to the car. That’s pretty much all a wheel nut does

and that’s really not likely to change anytime soon. Lugs are made from either steel which is the ones that came with your car, aluminum the one you want to swap out for and titanium the one you not only cannot get but DEFINITELY cannot afford.

Why all the HYPE?

It’s simple - the weight if you are into racing, but the looks if you’re a commoner. Go heff a steel lug in one hand and an aluminum lug nut in the other, you will more than likely bawl at how light the aluminum is. A typical steel OEM nut is about say 77 grams whereas your average GOOD aluminum lug comes in at about maybe 25-35 grams. As we all know, weight adds up, so with normal lugs, the added unsprung mass at the wheels could be as

With that said on its own aluminum CANNOT take stress and heat - it’s the nature of the beast. If you understand how heat affects metal you will know that when hot, metals expand and stretches. And unlike steel, everytime an aluminum nut goes through a heat cycle it actually gets weaker. How much weaker it gets is DIRECTLY linked to the type of alloy grade and forging process used. And that’s where the problems start. On a car your nuts gets very hot and if you want to put that to the test, drive hard, remove a steel nut if you can and hold it your hands, don’t call us from the hospital we won’t answer. Heat comes from everywhere; the rotors, the road, the environment, the pads. And all that heat is transferred throughout your entire hub which includes the nuts. The wrong grade or should we say cheap grades of aluminum plus heat means that the nut is more prone to damage not only by the heat but also by the threads of the stud. How you say? Well it’s simple once again. In science an object can only be damaged by one that’s harder than it, so because a nut is steel and steel is harder than aluminum, the threads on an aluminum are more prone to being stripped or snapped of. Add in a hard corner under bitterments where heat and MORE stress is placed on them and you can see how and why it becomes easier to shred the fragile groves of the thread. On the market there are many lug nuts made of lower grades of aluminum and these are the ones you hadda be careful of since their rate of failure is much higher than the ones made of steel or good grade aluminum. Good aluminum costs more because the base material and most likely the machining process and everything to go with it as well does to. That being said, these cheaper lugs that are all the rage cannot stand up to the day to day stress of driving over a long period of time and are very fragile. Odds are you WILL break one or a few at some point in time depending, so the question isn’t a matter of if, it’s actually a matter of when and if we are to believe Murphy’s Law it’s going to be at the WORST possible time. Even the stronger and much preferred 7075­T6 is susceptible to damage when the nut heats up past 250F, which happens quite easily during heavy pace. But like was stated before better quality aluminum has a greater tolerance.

On a side note: Now you know why when you overheat a

cylinder head it is prone to warpage and you hadda go by the machine shop to get it shaved. Aluminium alloys are widely used in automotive

How did you start in SPEED?

It was before I got my license, going down to the cross to watch men race with my older brother, back then he had a 2 door escort followed by a GSR Lancer with a non turbo Sirius engine, extractors, Webers and I always remembered saying “I want to be one of those drivers who people come to see.” When I finally got my permit aside from racing down Debe when I got my car, I remembered borrowing my brother’s Lancer and hitting 200km/h on the highway - the adrenaline rush had me like woah. I also have to credit my dad; he had a company 910 Datsun Bluebird and was only speed going up the highway, you only used to hear the kick down switch going *click, click, click*. I really enjoyed that - lol.

What did you start of pumping with?

My first car was a box Lancer with the normal 1500 engine but that wasn’t fast enough for me, so I upgraded it to a 1800 Sirus. Then came a B12, followed by an Orange CK lancer with an 1800 turbo FWD, but there was only soo much I could’ve done front wheel. It was then I said time to go all wheel and I converted the car to an 1800 GSR AWD lancer after which I sold and finally got an EVO 5.

What’s DIFFERENT about your Evo 5?

Nothing really. The only thing I did was replace the stock Evo 5 4G63 with one from an Evo 7 due to a mishap with detonation. However, when I first got the car all I did was install a Greddy boost controller and received a tune from Lyndon (Spartan Performance) followed by Ryan (R Tune) later on and who has been there ever since. Besides that all the car has is water/meth, a Koyo radiator, HKS drop in cams that haven’t been dialed in as yet, Exedy twin disc clutch, 3in exhaust and redone intercooler piping. The suspension is a used set of D2 coilovers which need changing right now and brakes are Hawk pads I got from Tuner Imports. That’s it.

What SIDES of speed have you been involved in?

Unofficially was Debe and south. But I officially started racing when TTASA used to hold drags in Camden. From there I went into Autosport with their Drag and Wind series, then a bit of Solodex and finally circuit racing with the Super Street class.

In drags I won the 15 sec. class consistently back with TTASA. In the Drag & Wind series I won out the 54 second class and then the open class. Solodex was something that I did for fun as the Drag & Wind was getting a bit boring; you could say that’s when I started looking for a bigger challenge, that’s when I entered the SuperCar race in Wallerfield where for their first race last year I was able to come in No.1 and later on I was able to record one of the fastest lap times for a street car in the Time Attack.

What are you most PROUD of?

That would be last year when I entered the SuperCar race for the first time. I didn’t know anything about circuit racing, so having to go up against some very experienced drivers I was expecting to come 5th or something but it so happened that I came in 1st back to back after starting at the back of the grid for both races.

What have you LEARNED in racing?

Racing is a discipline and there’s a way and a how to handle your car. Whether it be drags, solodex or circuit you must have patience and you must have understanding. I also learned how to handle and be one with my car. When I am behind the wheel my concentration level is all there. In fact racing has helped me cope with road rage which is something I used to suffer from in a bad way; before I would cuss man, woman and child for driving like jackass but now I jes calm myself. Also if you can’t handle talk ou shouldn’t be in this thing.

How many CLOSE CALLS have you had?

There were two, one in drag and wind where rain fell and the car picked up a skid then went sideways into the barriers. No matter what I did to correct, the car went where it wanted - I swear I was going to flip. The second would have to be on the circuit track in the SuperCar race where a driver wasn’t getting any brakes coming out a corner and was coming into me. It was a good thing I saw him thru the corner of my eye and adjusted or else. No lie ah get weak that day.

caught off guard in the middle of nowhere is not exactly something you want when cell phone signal is non existent and having vex money is useless - can’t pay a wandering Quenk for a short drop can you. The bush it’s all about survival and having the instinctual ability to circumnavigate the circumstance is paramount. Helping to do that is having the right machine that gets you where you need to be; in and out, rather than waste time, pull stones and add to the frustration. As with everything there are pretenders and then there are purpose built calpets structured to put dong action so good that mountains part like a jumbie bird drinking joy juice on Christmas during a jouvert parang session.

At the meeting spot Chinee was about to hop in the passenger seat when he was braced, told to drive and before the journey reached half way he wanted a jeep to buy BAD - BAD -BAD!

Malaying rock and dragging chain across manicou back in this scenario is a very capable 1986 Suzuki Jitney which in case you didn’t know is a GLOBAL staple in the bush scene. For the prim and proper; yes we know it’s supposed to be Jimny but this is Trinbago and it was called a Jitney when it now came out in the 80’s so move up. Constructed by Speedy G Garage for Chinee aka Anthony Gonzalez this Jitney at one point in time wasn’t even on the cards for the simple reason, Chinee was a man having endless fun tearing down the place with either a jilted JZ Crown or 13B aligned 3rd Gen Rx7. Going in to get grass in the middle of nowhere wasn’t on his wall. But that

VEHICLE MANAGEMENT If you’re following on the Driver Series you would realize that we place a great amount of emphasis on the DRIVER development and education. The reason for that is that as a driver at the end of the day you are responsible for yourself on the road - not the guberment, not the babs, not other drivers, not yuh mudda, not yuh fadda, nobody - jes you. You drive the car and anytime a car is driving you, something is outstandingly wrong. When it comes to driving there are (4) factors that affect the current situation; the environment, the road, the car and finally you. We could go on to include the laws of physics but that’s another thing. As was said before, cars have gotten BETTER, in fact cars are so good nowadays it’s hard to blame the car being at fault when an incident arises. Although sometimes due to their overcomplexity and behind the scenes interference that conflicts with driver inputs, cars can play a major role in accidents but at the end of the day you as the driver is supposed to be in control and in the know about what you pump in and how it behaves. Right; when it comes to cars; carmakers and the engineers who work on them have essentially buss down car safety into (2) categories primary i.e. active and secondary i.e. passive. At the office we consider active to be the bad boy since that’s all the features on a car that helps you AVOID getting into an incident in the first place. Secondary or passive kicks in AFTER the incident has already happened and is the protection given to the people in the car when things get turnt over.

rotors all around. But that stopping is within limits of course and between vehicle models right now outright stopping performance, pong for pong is negligible. Despite that, there are things that do affect a car’s ability to brake efficiently such as maintenance, suspension setup, weight distribution and ABS which you may know by hearing but really don’t know. Relax; anti lock braking (ABS) is a system on most new cars that allow you to stomp on the brakes as hard as possible without locking up the wheels. This allows you to maintain a level of steering control instead of picking up a skid over which you’re at the total mercy of physics. Now while ABS is a significant game changer to primary safety, it is not without fault. Contrary to popular belief and what has been sold, ABS doesn’t really help you stop better; it just reduces your chances of premature lockup of the wheels. The downside is that ABS actually increases your overall stopping distance when looking at the bigger picture more-so if you don’t understand how it works.

It’s PRIMARY Safety BABY!

The primary safety of a car or bike; no matter the type, borders on how well that vehicle can handle as well as how good it’s able to muscle grip the road like flour paste on gazette paper. Any good vehicle must be able to behave predictably across a multitude of conditions and this therein has a HUGE influence on what degree a driver feels in control. Mind you the same goes for a vehicle’s ability to grip the road. If you have ever driven a car with smooth tires in the wet you will understand what I am talking about here. Driving a car that’s unbalanced or inconsistent is stressful, as a car like that tends to keep you on edge since you don’t know what to expect given the situation, it’s always going to be how’s this thing going to behave or ah wonder what’s going to happen in the event of. And it’s this stress that eats away at confidence and further down the line, driver ability.

On the flip side to braking is Acceleration or as most Trini’s say speed - as in that car have real speed bai. Speed can be either a good and bad thing but it all depends on the responsibility, mental maturity of the individual and his/ her level of driving competence. For daily driving; as a matter of fact for ANY kind of driving except maybe in the mud, power can save the day. A car’s ability to accelerate is directly related to the amount of time you the driver will be exposed to danger; take for example overtaking - with power you mash, the car responds instantly, you get up to go and the maneuver is over and done with - no waiting, no fuss, no begging for the car to go faster. Many of the clueless might argue that too much power in a car leads to recklessness but that BS, as we say it all depends on the driver since recklessness is whole brain and right foot dependent. Having power when and where it counts makes a car “safer” and easier to drive which is another thing to consider when looking at vehicle management. A car that is a breeze to drive no matter the circumstance or application is less therapy for the man behind the wheel. This means not only can you focus more on actually driving but you’re going to be less tired and more confident. All this has the overall effect on reducing your risk of getting into something serious.

Speed can be either a good or a bad thing but it all depends on the mental maturity of the individual and his/ her level of competence.

Supplementing handling is braking and acceleration. Compared to the old days the brakes on modern cars are generally OUTSTANDING; we have gone from drum/ drum to full on multi piston calipers and vented

the kind of acceleration that counts for a buttery driving experience is not when power comes up high in the rev range but rather mid to low, which is why we say that building a street car and a track car is two different things. In a track car depending on the discipline, performance means maximizing power out on top but if you apply that same equation to a street car where all the power in high in the rev range odds are you will have to be on limiter ALL the time to squeeze out everything and who wants that for the daily driver.

If that’s how you does move anytime we bracing you for that date we hadda ask today for 10 years down the road. ROFL, don’t make it sound so, you guys just happen to catch me at a bad time. Lord put a hand. So what’s the real deal here cuz you don’t come across as a mover, shaker and create the pace maker. Well, both my parents were into speed so you could say I was pretty much born into it. Growing up, especially among two brothers, it was manual or nothing in my family. The speed thing came from when I used to go wallerfield with my dad as a teenager about 10 years ago when he first bought his 2004 Subaru. I picked it up not really with the intention to race or anything, went up to the line against a mutual friend and as the lights drop and I took off.

We want to ask who won that race but the power of first time luck seems strong with you. So who had... Also I forgot to add that I used to look at a lot of racing from Formula 1 to WRC to Drag Racing, so you could say all of that also helped fuel my interest in getting into speed as well. My mom; most definitely my mom. She did private school transpor t for many years and had a manual Suzuki Carry and….. Wheyyyy that was the original bread van back in the day unno; Suzuki make a mint with them ting. See; now you cutting me off mid sentence ­lol. Anyway, I remember as a child 8/9 years old watching her feet do the see­saw; that’s what I referred to it as, and saying to myself I can’t wait to do that. She made it look so easy. Outside of her were the people like Richard Burns, the great Colin McRae and others who I used to watch on TV doing things that I kept saying that I HAVE to try. Don’t try this at home disclaimers is meant for people like you yes. See how TV is not a good thing, reminds me of the time we tried that ramp thing that the fall guy used to do with a BMX ­didn’t end well nah. How was your whole manual learning experience? Tricky to be honest. I used to look at the see­saw thing and was like right; I got this. That’s until I actually got behind the wheel with an instructor who said off the bat I had a ‘heavy foot’. HAVING IT DOWN TO A SCIENTIST ONE OF THE

things about getting a bike is that if you don’t do it properly you get bored very fast. Dexter Dunlop fell into that bracket. Always having been around 2 wheels thru his uncle (Peter Charles) who was a diehard from back in the 70’s and 80’s. When Dexter made the decision to jump in the pool just 9 years ago he didn’t know squat. But what he did know is that there was something inside that was ah calling. Learning the fundamentals on a 175 that he rented from Lakhan’s Driving School, Dexter used to zig around for hours on that bike; everyday, all the time until the foundation was right for him to upgrade. Mind you that was in addition to reading alot of riding books, talking to more experienced riders about technique and looking at PLENTY riding videos. When the vertical hairs on his chest got thick enough, he made the dive to be out and about on his own with the purchase of a Yamaha YZF600R. As his first bike it was aite, but the novelty wore off faster than a stretch out Dr. Hyde mixtape. Put that together with the fact that he really couldn’t do much to the 600R, getting left behind all the time wasn’t fun and if we have to be honest the 600R wasn’t necessarily what you would call a looker, so the hunt began for a proper replacement. In his circles all everyone was buzzing about was the Suzuki, not seeing what the big fuss was about Dexter was neither here nor there until he happened to ride one for the first time. That was it dey unno -­ SOLD. One time he got the rid of the Thundercat and acquired a 2005 Suzuki GSX­ R750 but the contentment of that too soon turned sour after he got to ramp on a partner’s GSX­R1000. To Dexter, while the 750’s power was decent, the brute and blatant bull wuk of the 1000 was just too sweet and more in line with his somewhat aggressive riding style.

with so little mods you can tell there ain’t that much to really get down into but as been said before it doesn’t take much to make a bike go fast - it’s a bike.

GEARING UP FOR THE RIDE 2 We don’t get it. We just don’t get it. After going to funeral(s) of the dearly departed we at the Sixth can’t seem to understand why a lot of young riders assume that you can’t get hurt when on a bike and that world owes them something when on the road. Bikes are beautiful machines built to satisfy but like anything that good it’s dangerous when you act irresponsibly. Manufactures have gone the distance to make bikes as perfect as possible to the point where there really isn’t THAT much to do again. Bikes have better engines, better acceleration, better brakes, better suspension, better handling, better tires, unobstructed view; EVERYTHING is better, but you still finding men getting lick down. Now this bothers us greatly, especially when the clear up is seemingly avoidable. With common sense and use of your brain “accidents” or getting into one are 99% avoidable and proof of that is when you look at the age group of the riders who getting dealt with.

THE SAFETY THING. A-EFFIN­-GAIN

We can’t say it enough, for riders to get in through those THICK helmets. Motorbike safety begins and ends with you ­the rider and no one else. Want to reduce your risk of getting into a crash, how about educating yourself. Most men ride using skill, but skill can take you only so far. There is so much good information out there for men to be still riding in a bubble get educated about what it means to be a proper rider. The more info you have in your la cabeza, the better choices you will make BOTH consciously and unconsciously when riding. Instead of looking at all that FREE porn on the internet take some time to look at youtube videos showing proper riding techniques. In addition to there are tonnes of GREAT books besides the Sixth that have lots of excellent info that will help you as well. Another thing and we have said this before is that safety gear doesn’t help prevent injury in a crash. It just reduces the amount of damage you’re going to be exposed to; so you’re going to feel pain but rather than get the full brunt you may get some. But it will be good to note that everything is relative and it WILL do you well to understand that after a certain point safety gear is practically useless e.g. flying 100ft thru the air and landing on your neck or grinding thru some electric wire after doing 200+ km/h. In those circumstances it is pretty much a wrap for you #gameover. As a rider you need to comprehend that a bike is not only fast but on the road it’s a rather small thing ­so from a distance you going to look tiny until, most of the time it’s too late hence the reason they say that bright colors help you stand out as well as be seen by drivers who may not necessarily be paying full attention to their environment. Also remember that mentally; if you feel good, then the better you will ride automatically e.g. if you go out an ride in a jersey and no helmet, odds are you will be a bit more cautious and hesitant to do certain things as opposed to if you were fully kitted out. Unless of course you’re a pure rider who doh cater about life and limb. Putting aside safety gear, you’re supposed to know by know that more information helps you make better decisions and understanding the dynamics of circumstances on the road before hand will help you in thinking things thru and give you the platform where you can appreciate that there is always something you can do different. As a rider you have to be on point as you’re supposed to be in control and in the moment you gotta think and soak it out. Plus you must appreciate the fact that in an

collision your body is the crash cage.

So APPRECIATE THE SCENARIOS and LEARN A Car Turns Left In Front Of You

This happens alot to riders. You pumping hard and jes so - Rahhh, and it’s you in pieces. There are many things you can blame when a car fails to see you or and swings it sideways out of the blue; blame inattention, distraction, blind spots and even psychology but most times when a driver is looking out for cars and nothing is there the perception in their minds is that there is an absence of cars, not the presence of a motorcycle and if you factor how fast a bike accelerates; blink of eye business, it makes matters worse.

How to PREVENT

Avoiding the surprise means taking the surprise out of the surprise. Part of your job when riding besides enjoying the ride is to be a literal seeer woman. That means you have to develop the art of sensing what’s going to happen in the future using all of your senses. Anytime a trini driver about to do foolishness on the road, they usually give some kinda warning in advance, it may not be long in advance, BUT they do let you know. So what you have to do is look for the signs that could indicate someone may turn in front of you. Example of what we mean: a car is at an intersection or there’s a gap in traffic near an intersection. Slow down, cover your brakes, blip the throttle to make noise so they hear you coming and get ready to take evasive action. Yes, you do need to take something as simple as a car waiting as a major and immediate threat to your life; always be prepared for the worst as far as we are concerned. You also need to account for objects outside of your vision, so gaps in traffic can indicate the possibility of someone coming through that gap, even if you can’t see them.
