Mark McCarthy ~

Shark Island is one of my favourite waves in Australia. It’s not every year that Shark Island breaks on such a solid size but this day had the perfect amount of east in it! This day was kind of crowded so I was stoked to get a bomb out there. I love the fact that you can generate so much speed if you catch the wave from the peak and fly into the surge barrel. Ben Player was claiming this session as one of the best at Shark Island that he has ever seen‌ I scored three amazing days out of this swell and made my trip to Australia one that I will never forget! Adam Morley ~

Expression Session, South Coast Classic: Margate beach was breaking pretty big on the outside. As I started setting up to shoot for this session, Adam ran past, I shouted “Let's get a cover bru!” he nonchalantly replied back , “Just Watch”, while smiling and kept running with the rest of the group. I knew when this wave rolled through that he was going to hit it, so I readied myself and let things unfold! As it happened the crowd erupted like a kid at Christmas, screaming, shouting, whistling. He landed it too by the way. And deservedly won the session. The photo does no justice to how big it really was, but for those of you who were there, relive the memory. Enjoy. Simon Heale.

TRISKAIDEKAPHOBIA THE FEAR OF THE NUMBER 13

Our thirteenth issue leaves you with no reason to fear it. With a balmy twelve issue’s behind us there is no slowing down and as we grow and learn, we think this our best issue to date. With the winds of change blowing through the international bodyboarding scene, a tour at some of the world’s most notorious surf spots, and our very own Saffa’s there to fly our flag, life is looking good. As a precursor we bring you a memorable trip to the Mentawaii’s, we interview 2 of South Africa’s rising stars and give a school report on the 2010/2011 Hawaiian season straight from our scholar’s pens on the North Shore*. Enjoy. * I want to personally thank Sacha Specker for all his hard work on this issue. Please visit www.thespex.com and read on to see his skills in video and photo.

GREG ROSE-INNES\\ Hi, My name is Mark Thompson. I'm from Australia and I'm currently in Indonesia on holiday and a personal photography trip. Two friends and I planned on going to Sumatra for 2 and a half weeks so I could shoot and they could surf. Whilst departing Jakarta, I was given a seat next to a guy named Greg Rose-Innes. We began chatting and he explained that he was for from Cape Town and was travelling solo though Indonesia after he'd saved enough money from his part time job as a fruit picker in Western Australia.

I was sceptic on his level of bodyboarding at first when I saw his 2003 model BZ Jeff Hubbard board that had scratches all over it from nose to tail. However I assured my two friends that he seemed like a friendly guy and that I was happy for him to cruise with us if they were. After a few surfs were under our belts’ we were surprised with Greg as he'd always seemed to nail one of the best waves of the session and link up with me for the shot. As a 23 year old, I was inspired by Greg. He is only 19 and he's doing something that I haven’t seen many surfers do at his age. He'd moved to Australia on his own to work part time and earn the aussie dollar to save up and travel. So far he's doing pretty well. Kudos to Greg and the shots I got of him! I hope you like them... Mothers 2010/11 Pride. 3

With almost years having past since South African bodyboarding lost one of its brightest young stars Sixty40 are pleased to bring you the winner of the Mothers Pride award for 2010/11, Johnny Maritz. Photographer, Christy Strever, snapped the winning shot at the Wedge Classic 2010. The Mothers Pride award is given each year to the rider who Chris Elliott’s mother, Jacquie Jorgensen, judges to have busted the best “Sly Guy” (Invert). “The shot of Johnny was hands down winner for me. Something I was looking for this year was to be able to see the passion behind the move and this photo put a smile on my dial”, Jorgensen said. We would like to personally thank all the riders and photographers who entered the comp and urge you to continue to push the envelope of South African bodyboarding in true Chrizzle spirit and style!

Supporters: Turbo Bodyboards, Grand Flavour, Emerald Surf City, Zion, Ally and the Liquorish family! Travelling time to get to Hawaii: 13 hours to Sydney and 9 hours from Sydney to Hawaii. I preferred it to going via the US mainland. Rate the consistency/quality of the winter season: Um, I would probably say a 7 or 8, it’s been pretty good, I have been pretty tired of the crowds and vibes though. Standout performer of the trip in your eyes: Before I arrived apparently Iain Campbell was ripping, but since I've been here I would say Mark Watts for sure, he consistently gets good waves out at Pipe and is always the dude I get asked about. Tell us a funny story from the rock: We absolutely thrashed the Aussies at cricket on national Australia day. That was pretty funny.

Supporters: Rossi bodyoards, Emerald Bodyboard Shop, Iammonster and Star Crossed Tattoo's. Travelling time to get to Hawaii: 10hr Jetstar flight from Sydney. Rate the consistency/quality of the winter season: When I first got here it rained quite a lot and the swells were mainly north so it wasn’t very good for pipe, but we had good backdoor and OTW (Off The Wall) but it’s been pumping since January with lots of good swells hitting pipe, so it’s been a sick season overall. Standout performer of the trip in your eyes: All the boys have been surfing well and it's been sick having them all here. It has been nice to see some of the Saffa's again. Tell us a funny story from the rock: I’m not really a funny guy, but there are always a few good stories from Hawaii. Charles crashing his bike and Ryry (Ryan Cuttler) throwing up after playing drinking games. I love this place.

There have been some big swells which have been very sick to surf with the boys. Standout performer of the trip in your eyes: Iain Campbell has been killing it, Wattsy (Mark Watts) and of course Jerry (Jared Houston) has been amazing to watch in the water! Tell us a funny story from the rock: Pik (Jarret Johnson) and I have been staying together in a pretty pimped place and recently we were asked just to move next door for 2 nights because the place we were in now had been booked for those two nights prior to our arrival. So we moved into the new place and the another elderly couple moved into our old place. Anyway, to cut the story short, Jerry (Jared Houston) blasted in one night thinking it was still our place and caught the elderly couple by surprise while the lady wasn’t wearing too many items of clothing…

M

Age: 16 Hometown: Plettenberg Bay Years Bodyboarding: 6

Firstly, well done for winning the 2010 Boys SABA tour, what does this mean to you and who has been your main rival? Thanks Mark. I am super stoked to have won this year, especially because it is my last year in boys. I would definitely say that my main competitor was Tristan Roberts, from Boland.

Any sponsors? Unfortunately not...anyone keen? (078 714 5441)

So what does the future hold for you? The future seems quite good. I am third in the junior division this year, so I am hoping to repeat or even top this result next year. I aim to further improve my bodyboarding, land my first sponsor and besides the SABA tour, go to Indo.

Do you think there is a missing link in the development of bodyboarding in SA? The reason I am asking is that there are so many up and coming groms from Australia, why not SA? I would say that South African sport in general is not assisted as professionally as it should be. We need the government and sponsors to put aside money, so that people who make South African colours can travel

overseas without having to spend their hard earned cash. I’m not entirely sure what the situation is in Australia, however I do know that bodyboarding is bigger there than here in South Africa. I also know that the top Pro’s are now able to make a living through bodyboarding, by working together with their sponsors. Knowing that you could make a living through a sport that you love would get any grom amped to get in the water and push the limits. So basically we need sponsors and the government to look into the sport of bodyboarding, as well as support and coverage from the media. But this all has to start with development programs within each province and the reintroduction of the U12 division.

How do you think you can improve your riding? In general, I think that riding bigger waves would improve my bodyboarding greatly. Also, watching and learning through DVD’s and local rippers, such as Sampi Kamffer, would improve my riding. I’m also going to focus on landing bigger and more complicated tricks, whilst trying to keep my style as smooth as possible. If I’m lucky, I’ll get my brother to come film my sessions, and learn from my mistakes.

What are your top 3 results? 1st at Wedge Classic 2010 (Boys) 1st at West Coast Classic 2010 (Boys) 2nd at Wedge Classic 2010 (Juniors) //

SIXTY40.CO.ZA

43

// So, being from Plett, do you get to ride waves other than Wedge?

I would definitely say that I mostly surf at The Wedge, it’s an epic wave and most of the time it’s only my mates, Mike, Nikki and I out. Otherwise I surf spots like The Wreck, Lookout and if I’m lucky, Sampi takes me on a mission to ‘The Valley’.

I see your mom or dad at all the contests you compete in, you must be stoked to have that support? Having my mom and dad’s support at the comps definitely helps. Both of them give me a lot of support and tips, and help me to get focused before my heats. My dad also films all of my heats, so that I can watch them at night and correct my mistakes the following day.

Who inspires you? Sampi Kamffer, Sacha Specker, Wesley Fischer, Mark McCarthy and some ozzie oaks, like Jake Stone.

Worst wipe out? Getting my head bashed in and scraped across a shallow sandbank by a mutating lookout wave. Had my back flexed so much that my fins were touching my head. I ended up losing my eyebrow. (It still hasn’t grown back). Hahaha

What do you get up to when you’re not bodyboarding? Well, school is always there to take up time which is not spent in the water. Other than that, I swim, play hockey or water polo, chill with my family, skate or go to a mates’ house.

Thanks for your time Champ, any last words? Thanks for this opportunity Mark and the Sixty40 crew. I’d also like to thank you and all the Pro’s who helped me get where I am. Cheers.

Written by Marcus Phitides

{

Every surf-stoked grom has that one special place that they want to surf before they die. You might be reading some dog-eared surf mag or listening wide-eyed to some salt-encrusted ballie recounting an epic surf mission when all of the sudden there it is. The mere fleeting glance or secretive whisper of a particular wave sends your water-logged mind into overdrive. Pacts are made, posters planted firmly on the wall and instantaneously all other waves become secondary pretenders. You’ve found a wave that ultimately locks into your surfing subconscious for eternity.

ISLANDS

48

SIXTY40 BODYBOARDING MAGAZINE // ISSUE 13

The

This was the first time our surf guide had ever seen this spot break! Day 1 Seth Phitides samples a new discovery.

Mentawai Islands have been playing that dream wave role for surf-obsessed individuals for close on two decades now. Macaroni’s has often been described as the world’s most high performance wave where anybody can be king for the day and Lances Right continues to be nonchalantly referred to as “perhaps the best right in the world”. With such promising descriptions coming out of these tropical isles, it’s no wonder that the place has become a favourite hangout for the world’s surfing elite and a sure-fire destination for big wig photo shoots. But have the islands become a victim of their own ruler edged perfection and are they just another over hyped and over exposed corner of the surfing globe? I for one was slightly sceptical when I set off with a crew of nine other bodyboarders and surfers earlier in the year. The place just seemed too good to be true. Every good surf trip has a defining day. The type of day when you realise why you endured a torturous flight halfway around the world. We were already a few days into our two week boat trip and had scored a few of the lesser known spots when our self-proclaimed Mentawai hermit and hard charging surf guide, Ryan, informed us of an approaching swell the following morning. One that would light up some of the more fearinducing spots around the island chain.

SIXTY40.CO.ZA

49

There’s

an age old myth in surfing folklore that there’s a direct correlation between the amount of beers you consume the night before and the quality of the surf the following morning. When you consider the bellowing emissions from down below deck, the number of crumpled Bintang cans up top and the jade coloured slab detonating off our port side, a Bintang babalas delivered the goods. The scene was straight out of the Jurassic era with the occasional primeval shriek from the local wildlife echoing out of the jungle lining the beach. The wave, nestled within a mist-shrouded bay, was a flat-backed wedging bowl that grinded relentlessly down the line. Closeouts were greeted with straight-leashed hold downs and reef slams. It would be all too easy at this point in the story to become lost in some clichéd rambling of how many empty barrels were had and how hard everyone charged but that day of surfing was only the tip of the iceberg. The remainder of the swell highlighted why the Mentwais are so renowned.

SIXTY40 BODYBOARDING MAGAZINE // ISSUE 13

The

islands hold a microcosm of every surfer’s idea of perfection. Rights, lefts, slabs, freighttrain bombs and even the odd decent beachie. The sheer variety of the place allowed everyone to slot into their own utopian surf heaven and the boat became a veritable surfing Olympics. In the morning, we would be getting shacked at a heaving reef and by the evening, jamming standup turns and longboard arches at Macca’s. A true surfing playground for all.

TOP: Macas was one of the most playful waves of the trip, Wayne Beekman enjoying... BELOW: After giving the 'excuse' of condensation shutting down his camera equipment, Colin van Dongen took full advantage of the situation.

A Mentawai boat trip changes you. You become more in tune with your environment and the subtleties of the ocean. On your first evening, when you’re motoring out of a muggy Sumatran port, your lack of sea legs quickly becomes evident as you grab any available railing with white-knuckled fists. Two weeks later you’re doing the same crossing, except this time you’re confidently swaying with the role of the boat while double-fisting Bintangs and puffing a Gadung Garam ciggie like a modern day pirate. Land, once so familiar under your feet, now becomes something you come into contact with when you hit the reef. Meal times become much anticipated events, which are accompanied by the odd sea snake off the stern, while a “night out” consists of visiting Robinson Crusoe style bars and paddling a cooler box of beer to an idyllic one-palmed island. SIXTY40.CO.ZA

53

As

you set sail for a final overnight mission back to mainland Sumatra, the Mentawais start to take on an almost dream-like quality. You reflect on the fact that you’ve just bodyboarded more in the last two weeks than you have in the last half a year and you remember the heart warming friendliness of the locals when they shouted “Waka Waka” at the sight of Bafana Bafana t-shirts. Spending two weeks on a boat allows you to reconnect with your passion for the ocean and its powerful draw that brought you into bodyboarding in the first place. People will continue to fly to the Mentawais for a fast fix of perfection but the trip’s true value is not found just in its incredible waves but also in its unique life-changing experiences. Experiences that can bring together a bloody good bunch of mates for memories of a lifetime and the realisation that in this modern day and age, the idea of a surfing paradise really does exist. As life changes, those

posters that once plastered your walls as a grom slowly but surely start to come down, but the Mentawais are that one poster you should never let go of...

M

Age: 13 Hometown: Cape Town, and now I live in Hermanus

Roberts also helps me with my riding and nothing would be possible without my sponsors.

I have heard all this talk about Onrus, so tell me how good does it get and what is the best time of the year to head down there?

Do you see yourself as a free rider or more of a contest kind of guy?

Onrus gets really good and has a lot of potential. I would say it’s best in winter when there is swell and SE winds blowing. There are a lot of spots around but I can’t really give them away.

Any sponsors? I am sponserd by Science and Reef through Len Bradford, without him none of this would be possible. Power Balance is a really great product and helps me A LOT with my bodyboarding. Tribal surf designs’ is an up and coming surf shop in Onrus. They help the local bodyboarders in Onrus a lot! Sterio, which is an amazing clothing brand which is taking the market by storm! The designer and CEO is a local boy!

More of a contest guy. I like the adrenalin rush from contests!

In my eyes your riding is very similar to Tom Rigby and Ben Player. Is style something that you have worked on, or is it more of a natural thing? My style took me a long time to get so I guess with practice comes perfection.

What’s your goal for next year? It’s to go back to SA's and to show people what I'm capable of.

Will we see you entering Pro in a few of the contests next year? Yes, I am doing Boland trials next year for boys and Pro's, so from there we will have to see.

What are your top 3 results? 2009 was my first SA champs and I tied for 5th. Cape Classic 2010 I came 1st. At Plett wedge 2010 I came 2nd.

Who and what inspires and motivates you to bodyboard? Well, all the local guys at Onrus have been helping me since I was 6 years old and they still do, so I respect them a lot. (LOC 316!). My brother, Carden

What's your best memory of being a BB so far? Feeling the vibes of sitting in the longest barrel of my life so far at Onrus, coming out and hearing all the guys going mad.

// Tell me your best joke? Hahaha, I don’t know to many jokes but here’s one: A man escapes from prison where he has been for 15 years. He breaks into a house to look for money and guns and finds a young couple in bed. He orders the guy out of bed and ties him to a chair, while tying the girl to the bed he gets on top of her, kisses her neck, then gets up and goes into the bathroom. While he's in there, the husband tells his wife: "Listen, this guy's an escaped convict, look at his clothes! He probably spent lots of time in jail and hasn't seen a woman in years. I saw how he kissed your neck. Do whatever he tells you! Satisfy him no matter how much he nauseates you. This guy is probably very dangerous. If he gets angry, he'll kill us. Be strong, honey. I love you." To which his wife responds: "He wasn't kissing my neck. He was whispering in my ear. He told me he was gay, thought you were cute, and asked me if we had any Vaseline. I told him it was in the bathroom. Be strong honey. I love you too!"

Any last words boet? Just want to say thanks a lot for the interview Mark and just keep SHREDDING boetie!

Big Red on his backside DK pit: I was just hanging out down at The Hoek with my dk mate Rory (pocket pal), this was one of the better days this season. We belong to a secret club called FDK and are proud co owners of the un-masked project. I mostly just still really love DK and now-a-days kids dont represent it much, so I just wanna keep it going.
