After proving my skills in a 3ft beach break in Western Australia last year, Sacha didn't hesitate to hand me the camera before his big win in Hawaii this year! This is him, laying on the rail just moments before he became the Pipeline DK champ and a few months before taking out the Port Macquarie Pro and finding himself in contention for the World title. Sacha has always been there for me, so here's step 1/25 of my reimbursement.

Bodyboarding finds its soul in David Lilienfeld [By Ian Kruger] The 19th of April 2012 will be remembered as one of the most tragic days in bodyboarding history. Springbok bodyboarder, David Lilienfeld, was attacked by what is being termed as an extremely aggressive 3 to 4 meter great white shark at Caves, Koeel Bay. While these are the cold hard facts, the amount of humanity that is so carefully interlinked to this event would continue to unfold and culminate in what can only be described as the

greatest showing of community from fellow wave riders that I have ever witnessed. As the news spread like wildfire via the various social media platforms everyone went into overdrive trying to verify facts at the notoriously 'network less' Koeel Bay. The emotional rollercoaster that the online masses endured paled in comparison to the valiant struggle that David and his brother, Gustav, endured. As highlighted by Gustav in his heart wrenching memorial speech on the beach at Camps Bay,

David never stopped fighting. His valiant effort against the shark meant that the beast had to make a pass at him three times before it managed to achieve its objective. Following the tragedy, there was an outpouring of heartache and blame directed at Ocearch and the City of Cape Town. While many questions remain unanswered, the masses needed a target for their disbelief and anger. Through this a shell shocked community came together on Saturday the 21st of April 2012 to mourn a brother of the ocean in a ceremony that the ancient Hawaiian gods would have been pleased with. Some people say that upwards of 1000 people descended upon Camps Bay to pay tribute to this Warrior of the ocean. And it could not have come at a better time. As the crowds gathered in shock disbelief at what should have been an innocent surf mission, the tears flowed openly to mourn
the loss. And as more and more people came together it slowly began to turn. It began with the gathering of his closest friends around the memorial flower covered surfboards. As they began to share openly the stories of David and his well lived life, a glimmer of happiness started to shine through. And as more tears were shed during Gustav and Dirk's (David's dad) speeches, that glimmer started to shine as everyone made their way to the waters edge. The paddle out commenced with a few quiet words, a moment's silence and eventually erupted into what we were all there to do. To remember a brother, a son, a friend. And to celebrate a well lived life. David, you touched the hearts of all the people you met, and this is where we will continue to carry you forever.

RIP David Lilienfeld The flame of life that was lit for David in the centre of the
tribute circle. Messages, prayers and flowers were then thrown into the flame as a final way of saying farewell to a brother, a son, a friend and a legend. The bodyboarder in the red wetsuit (behind the flame ) is Gustrav Lilienfeld - David's brother and shark

When you think of Durban you think warm food, warm water, warm air, smooth crispy offshore mornings and sugarcane fields infested with snakes. But I guess that's just for the people who don't live there. So to get a little bit more insight we delve into the mind of a local bodyboarder and one of South Africa's very own supergroms, Stephan Du Preez. He's been killing it from his local in Durban, down the coast with sweet wedges and all the way to the ice blocks of the Atlantic. Free surfing and contest, he is undoubtedly one of the most talented kids we have and his smooth style in the water will show you exactly why he is in the running as top contender in Junior division this year.

For those who don't know, give us a bit of background as to what makes you tick?
One thing for sure is that I absolutely love bodyboarding, I would do anything and everything to make time for my beloved sport and I will never ever put it aside for anything or anybody. There’s nothing better than waking up early and checking your local surf spot on an amazingly crisp winter morning and scoring amazing waves with your mates, uncrowded as always. Can’t get much better!
If there was ONE contest on the GSS World Tour that you could get a wildcard entry for which would it be and why?
That would definitely be The IBA Pipe Challenge, I think it would be logical to try score cooking pipe with 3 guys out? And the exposure is massive!
3 Words to describe what bodyboarding means to you? Dream, life, inspired.
Have you got any international or national plans? Tell us about them.
This year is going to be a big year for me, I’m going to compete in every single event on the SABA tour this year for pro and junior to collect a top 5 place in pro and a win in juniors to get into the pipe main event at the end of the year, and yes, I’m so amped on my trip to Hawaii. During the year I will also be doing a trip to Mozambique with Storm Prestwich and Sean Muller to get some surf time in. So keen!
What are your top 5 waves in South Africa that you've ridden? And what waves around the country would you pay large amounts of money to surf?
Cave Rock, North Beach, Yzerfontein, Lookout and a cool little ledge on the coast that I don’t dare tell where. I would pay so much money to surf Devil’s horn, Blue Mayo, Deadman’s, Tant and P.A. wedge. image // Bryan Paynter

What inspires you to be the person you want to be tomorrow?
I believe that the people of today inspire the people of tomorrow. Needless to say watching people like Jeff Hubbard, Jared Houston and Pierre Louis Costes bodyboarding inspire me to push harder and become a better bodyboarder and a better person. I love seeing the way that these guys carry themselves and have great attitudes, it just sets the benchmark so much higher for us and that pushes me more and more.
Durban Cyclone or West Coast winter?
West coast winter for the footage I have seen of the west coast in winter, my oh my.
Durban Betties or Cape Town Honey's?
Cape Town honey’s. (After spending SA’s at big bay I cannot compare the two! Unless you like curry?)

Llandudno The spot with the coldest water and an even frostier reception.

If you don’t already surf Llandudno, don’t start. Just last night- amongst much finger-pointing, muscle flexing and head-slapping - I saw a guy named Guy repeatedly stab a dreadlocked dropkneer in the ribs with his kneeboard. Hell, even if you already do surf Llands then maybe it’s time you considered another beach? Because besides the ice-cream headaches, the lack of parking, the crowds, the aggression in the water and the fisticuffs on the beach, there are also snakes on the pathway, malevolent banks, killer rips and the wave is generally regarded as;
“The World’s Greatest Straight Hander”. Keep on moving, pal. Nothing to see here... But then there are a lucky few who, despite the abovementioned adversities, still manage to get some. They are Llandudno's favourite sons, a crew of guys who together with standup charger Frank Solomon and ultra-marathon runner Ryan Sandes, dropknee wizards turned standups Caleb and Cheyne Bjergefelt, and old-hands Marcus Phitides and Jarred Barbe, plus a host of others I’m probably doing myself a disservice by not mentioning, paid their dues as grom’s and have now positioned themselves on top of the pecking order. They grew up throwing stones from the lookout point into the bin below, getting tossed around the Funbox, washed into the rocks next to the Gat and it’s because of this that they’re getting the next set wave and you’re not. And in case you’re wondering who you need to give that next wave to, it’s these guys: Disclaimer: now obviously this is a personal list, and there’ll be a bunch of guys that disagree with me, but I’m just going by what I see. If you have a better list then send a letter to the editor or, better yet, write your own goddamned article.

The King
The undisputed king of Llandudno is also your Pipeline Dropknee Champion. Sacha Specker. Spex doesn’t surf Llands as much these days, what with his world tour commitments and pro-surfer girlfriend living in Slummies, but when he does he makes up for all the waves that he’s missed out on by catching absolutely everything. Spex not only catches more waves than anyone else, he does more with a single wave than most guys do in a session, and he’s also got the uncanny ability to make everyone around him want to surf that much harder than they usually do. From screaming through barrels that would close-out mere mortals to his trickery above the lip, Spex is the undisputed champion a level that you can’t be in, and add to this a solid DK attack and it’s plain to see // why Spex wears the crown.

The Mayor of Llandudno Although most of the time Seth Phitides would rather standup surf or shoot photographs, when the waves are perfect you better believe that he’s going to take things lying down. Seth’s got that quiet confidence that most watermen have, and since living in Llandudno has taken it upon himself to document the idyll on his doorstep. His eye for the natural beauty around him is only matched by his ability to be in the right place at the right time when a set rolls through. Just don’t get on his bad side because he’ll drill you, no quibbles.

Mr. Nice
I always enjoy surfing with Dwala because he’s always so positive. Dwala is also the most committed guy on this list, and will catch a bus, ride his skateboard or hitch to Llands in order to surf it. He’s also always friendly to blow-ins from other beaches, which I suppose you can afford to be when you have a face full of scars and a physical presence like a juggernaut. //

The Dark Horse When I first met Greg Fraser I didn’t even know he rode a bodyboard, and just thought he was a sardonic guy who liked to smoke weed on the Bowling Club’s balcony. Then I saw him ride and liked him even better. Greg falls outside of the tightknit Llands crew, who always let out a collected groan when he paddles out because he’s such a snake, but I’ll include the one-man wolfpack because he surfs the place so good. I actually think he might have mild Aspergers Syndrome or something?

The Flying Dutchman
Jaco is a skinny Afrikaans guy from George. He’s also a CA and uses the big bucks that he makes on new boards and boat trips. He’s had waves on No Friends videos and double-page spreads in foreign bobyboarding mags and when he gets the right section on the right wave you can see why. The best thing about Jaco is that he has a smoking hot girlfriend who loves browning her bits on the beach while he surfs. And because he’s punching way above his weight, all you need to do is tell him that there’s a bunch of guys on the patch giving her glad-eye and he’ll go in and try usher her away to a less exposed part of the beach.

Unlike the above mentioned brats who all live in Hout Bay or Llands, Ishmaeel lives down the road from me in Observatory, and has to put in the legwork to get to the beach. He’s a versatile rider and one of the few guys who splits his riding between DK and prone. He’s also a vicious martial artist, which may or may not have anything to do with that weird Gyroll move he does?
Magneto
Cato has the type of patience that probably comes from growing up with nine siblings. Unlike most of us scraping into every pulse, he’ll wait for that one bomb that counts, which is usually perfectly aligned with Seth’s fisheye lens. Cato always sits further out than everyone else, shivering in his hood – he weighs like 60kg – and will almost always nab the wave of the day, Even if it means waiting up to 45 minutes for it.
The Kid I don’t really know much about Budgie other than that he’s a medic and helped my friend Bart when he caught a straight-hander into the sandbank and messed up his back something terrible. He’s like that grommet who grows up bigger and better than everyone else but because he used to be a grom everyone still sees him as one. Budgie’s a top-dog lifeguard that gets the prime parking spot overlooking the bay and judging by the decals all over his bakkie is the only sponsored rider on this list. Good for you Budgie (sans Spex).

Miff-D John McDonald once drank 20 draughts at the cricket and then paddled out for an evening session straight afterwards.E-i-e-i-o! He's definitely an A team rider, but then he's also an A team jorler, which is a difficult hand to play. But somehow he manages it and when the stars align McD’s moments of brilliance are a joy to watch. However, the guy has a very short temper and doesn’t put up with the straight-handers or crowds very well, which if he worked on he could surf for longer and get those aforementioned stars to align more often.
The Groms When I started surfing Llands there weren’t a lot of kids riding it but they’ve been getting braver and braver, surfing the bigger days and paddling around the standups and sitting in the Gat with the rest of the crew. Most of them have really good styles and some are busting moves that the older crew wish they could. It’s a healthy sign of our times that there’s this new guard coming up. Hopefully they're as protective of their little patch of ground as those that came before them and don't just let any old blow-in paddle past them.

A long string of events need to line up before you win an event. Winning at home on your own turf is always easier, but winning in Hawaii, the furthest possible point from South Africa and at a wave like Pipeline, unique and intimidating in every way, is well and truly a pipe dream. After losing in my first heat of the prone event, all the seriousness and pressure of performing in the event evaporated. I got to shoot the first three days of absolutely pumping waves, experiencing and capturing my fellow belly shredders navigating their way through some of the biggest and deepest barrels I have seen in the past 10 years at Pipe. This was just as good as competing. I felt like I was sharing all of these moments with the competitors, following them through my viewfinder as they wrestled foamballs and jockeyed shockies, claiming 9's and 10's all day long. Watching 70 odd heats where 2 people lost and 2 people got another chance at becoming a Pipe Champion, helped me realize that taking care of all the things in your power, ride to your strengths and don't let the variables that you cannot control bring you down, then all that is left to do is get two good waves in 20 minutes. //

Before I knew it I found myself in a 4-man final at the infamous Banzai Pipeline with three Hawaiians who have collected their fair share of 10's out there. The first, a true waterman, Kainoa McGee could ride anything that even slightly resembles a watercraft and get barreled out there. The second, Bud Miyamoto is a master of the Jack stance and former Pipe Champ. He is seemingly glued to his board, hardly falling off, even when weaving through cappuccino pits or launching freakish backflipreverse-airs on the knee. Finally the young Maui ripper, Miles Kauhaahaa is never to be under estimated. The natural footer is a Backdoor specialist, seldom falling short of earning a near perfect score with a clean deep barrel, finishing off with lofty floaters over the shallow Backdoor reef. I sat a little wide as the north ones were running off the end of the reef at Pipe and I had no intention of trying to work on my backside tube riding skills in the final. Within the first six minutes I had the final in a combination situation with a pair of sevens for a couple pocket hooks and barrels. They all needed a combination of scores to catch me. I felt comfortable, but knew that all of them were very capable of this in the 19 minutes left. With about 15 minutes left, Bud managed to get out of combo with a deep and frothy barrel, scoring a high eight, but that seemed to be the last of the action, as for the final eight minutes of the heat, the ocean did not offer another opportunity for any of the finalists to answer back.
I consider myself lucky, but I guess we all need some luck some time...
