How To Capture A Croissant? This module allow us to analyse the structure and texture of the croissant. To repressent the speciality of each croissant, during the capture process, a photography setup was arranged. A large sheet was use as backdrops, which was placed to curve between a vertical and horizontal surface. The Key light and fill light were setup , which enabled the form of croissant can be captured avoiding distraction. In this task, my photographic and fixup skill was explored. Using some tools in the photoshop, such as the adjustment of level, contrast and curves, allowed me to think about the color and the texture better for this module.

How To Draw A Croissant? In order to present the crusty and fragile texture of the croissant by drawing, the orthographic space was focused. Some techniques like hatching and shading were utilised. When I tried to present the light and depth on the croissant, I not only adjusted the power that I applied on the pencil, but also changed different types of pencil and the intense level of the lines. It was important to consider the accuracy of the drawing. To gain the accuracy, the tracing process was necessary at the first time. The drawing skills was improved during the practice, and the method of labeling the dimensions was also learnt from this task.

How To Project A Croissant? The sections of croissant was scaned during the process of presenting the axonometric drawing of the croissant, which helped us explore the space inside of the croissant. We used the plan view of croissant and rotated it 45 degree to construct the axonometric drawing. Also the grids were set up to identify the size and shape of each croissant cuts, which allowed the axonometric drawing can be presented in the scale 1:1. The rendered version of the croissant was also gained by hatching and shading. In this process, the skills of drawing was challenged.

The Making of a Projected World

Mario World Elevations

This module was expected to explore the combination of two-dimensional and three dimensional space by arranging two original Mario World elevations into an axonometric image. We followed the planometric method to build the conversion from two dimensional to three dimensional world for determing the depth and factural distance of objects, to reavel the reveal the space in the Mario World.

In the Mario World that I designed, there was an maginary yellow moon outside of the frame, as the original elevations were shown in the tarry night and filled with warm sands and golden coins. Therefore, the whole image were set in the warm color. I thought it would be interesting to explore what hided behind the wall, so I hided numbers of coins and the coins tubes inside the forest. To enable the world to be more creative and developed, I removed the floor blocks and let the elements just float in the space naturally refer to the suggestion from my tutor. It added more possibillity into this work and concept.

The software like Indesign and Illustrator were used in this task. This application of techniques improved my knowledge and skills of digital design. The whole work was firstly designed by drawing refer to the elevations, and than scaned to colored by using the illustrator.

Building Blocks For Creating A World

To create the sense of three-dimension, I used different levels of color according to the light direction. You can find some simillar color in the color pallate, which was set to present a more realistic version of elements instead of the imaginary style. However, in order to remain the playful and active style of the Mario World, a wonderland, I chose the colors in high saturation.

Some Details

To emphasize the skinny trees contain the coins, I utilised some white highlight to present its sense of metall, which separate them from other normal trees. For the same principle, some coins were covered with the lighting bubbles. I thought that would be cute and may enable them to be transfered smoothly.

The Making Of A New Surface In this module, we began to explore both the visual and phsical representation by introducing the three-dimension modeling not only in digital but also the phsical way. Starting with the model designing in Rhino, using the panelling tools and various modeling techniques. The contours of the terrain were separated in to some different groups and transformed into modular array of 100 units. And in the final process, we completed the model with ivory card, whose hard quality allowed the model was constructed firmly.

To present a well-made model, I designed to make a surface that can show the sense of curve and wave. The effect of surging flow was expected, the outflux effect need to be created. Therefore, the pyramid in exaggerate slope was put in one of the corner area, which is the emphasis of the model. The pyramid in the same direction enable audience to sense the flowing effect, which is the main focus of this model, instead of the messy intersect. However, to prevent the model from boring organization, the transition between the corner and the main ‘flow’was design with some planned intersection.

Five types of blocks were used in this model. Each of the block has different pointed direction, either in angle or height. One of the blocks is divided into two pyramids which are in different height, it was mainly used to increase the shadow area and the complexity. The regular pyramid was used to soften the transition and eliminate gaps. These blocks were used to create the sense of wave by being organized in the specific order. The point attractor was used in the custom panelling to organize the blocks. The points that along with the middle line and three of the corners were chose, which enable the depth in these area were created. Lastly, the pyramids in the same direction were all adjusted in different height.

The last module aims to develop field based on the cities that appear in the traveling story of Marco Polo, which of mine is the Clhloe.

City Chloe Chloe is a city with an air of superficial calm, but contains the sign of unease under its surface. In this city of strangers, people will not make eye contact directly with each other. However, there are thousands of thoughts inside them when they are observing others. These three groups will be the major characters that play in the scene, especially the first two groups. According to the record, most of the strangers are the visitors of the city. Therefore every stuff in the city are new and with rooms to grow. Maybe the girl with parasol is looking forward to meet a handsome young man, but unfortunately she was peeked by a weird giant. Two young men were attracted by the gorgerous lady, but they did not expect that the lady is confident and cynical with what might happen among them.As the text shown, “seduction, copulation, orgie were mainly metioned in the description. Two different perspective of the scene will show two point of view from two genders.

MODULE 4

Siyao Liu, 1025244

We used the Rhino, Illustrator and Photoshop to adjust our design into the work. The old quad was an nine grids basic arcades with the vaults and columns of blocks. I moved 1/3 grids away to divide the area into two parts. One is the street full of visitors in reality, the other one is the imagine illustration of them. To help the audience understand two perspectives more easier, notations were set. The threshold was put between two different main stories of two groups of character to The weight lines were drew in abstract wave shape, which are gentle and in the low position in the realistic area but increase dramaticly into the imagination area. As assistance, the atmosphere circle are put in the increase location, which are also the position of two main imagination of the characters. The dramatic increase of height and the circle are helpful for audience to get into the theme of “seduction. The glance and gaze direction of the characters are different from direction of the characters move, which indicates there no eye contact among them and story is hapening secretly and indirectly. Also some direction lines shows the differences between the supporting roles and main roles, as they are in totally different position. 0

Perspective 01

In this perspective, the main characters, the girl with parasol and tattooed giant were put in the right front side to illustrate their roles. Only the imagination of the giant is shown in the left side of the view. In case of the relationship between the giant and girl is not clear enough, two strong rose vines were put under their feet, which is to symbolize the seduction comes from the underground and happening silently and also to link them together with the imagination scene. More rose vines and some floating petals are added in the left heaven view to indicates the romantic or holy sexual atmosphere. To emphasize that, the snake was also put into the scene, as the symbol of snake was always linked with the erotism in history. The snake on the giant and the rose tattooes play the similar role in the view. What’s more, to illustrate the imagination is from the giant, I chose the imagination characters deliberately, where you can see the male has the similar ear with the tattoed giant.

Perspective 02

A pretty dramatic atmosphere should be gained by the perspective2, after seeing the perspective1. In this perspective, the heaven is exploded more. Instead of only moving the blocks apart, the blocks were managed in a “falling arrangement. It is to express the level of passion and intense in the imagination, which can be in stark contrast with the peaceful smile on courtesan. And in order to hide the messy blocks in the perspective 1 to express the dramatic effect better, I drag most of the blocks out of the old quad, which also enable the composition of the blocks be more reasonable in aethetic way. The same texture of vaults and floor were used in this perspective as well, but the gradient direction changed, as it is observed from different point of view. The similar symbols , such as the rose vines and petals were applied on to indicate the relation between the imagination and the main characters. Also, to enhance the holy and illusory atmosphere, more clouds are added in this perspective.

Going through this subject, I found that it is really essential to master as

more techniques as we can during our leisure time, if we want to express the ideas on our own wills. The technique is a factor that would strict our work seriousely.By studying the “FoDR”, I have gained further in the technique learning. Not only the drawing skills, but also the using of some software, such as the Illustrator, Rhino and Indesign. It provided me with a good starting of studying in design. Also, at the level of ideas, I learnt how to develop our own concept by accepting others’ opinions. For example, I adjusted the dimensions weight and developed the photos for each module for this porfolio, which all refer to the feedback that I gained from the critic. It told me that accepting some of the ideas is a effective way to go further. Speaking of the things that I learnt from the lecture and reading, the words like orthographic projection, homogenous space need to be mentioned. Each content of the lecture and reading were palned clearly to verify each skill that we need to grasp from each module, which were really helpful for the development and understanding of our work. Without knowledge, it would be easy for the design process to go wrong or mess. And the understanding of projection and space can also enable us to go deeper when we design. Although I might present a better work in the module 4, what I found the most successful part in the whole semester should be the module 2, as that was the module that I learnt most. By developing the world of Mario, I gained the color skills and practised them a lot and I liked the concept of revealing the invisible view of two-dimensional world. Maybe the wall in the precedent work was lack of the sense of threedimension, changed the color again to present them better along with other elements in this porfolio. What’s more, after understanding the axonometric view better, I adjusted the shape of tubes to allow the work to be more complete. I kept learning from these process and that is what I am glad about.
