SITE ANALYSIS When I first saw the site I think that the Theatre here must be very popular and busy. The site is located on the corner of Spencer and Bourke streets which are occupied by the major traffic lines in Melbourne CBD.

Southern Cross Station must

be the busiest place in the city. It has the services of rail, bus and airport transfer. The site in such location could be the first building that people from other place to see when they arriving Melbourne. Therefore, it gives the chance for the theater to become one of Melbourne’s Landmarks! The position of the site allows the theatre has the easiest access from anywhere in and out of Melbourne. Route 96 and 86 tram runs on Bourke Street. And those trams can take people to Dockland, Crown Complex and Yarra River Band. In this case, the theatre also could be part of the travel tour in Melbourne.

The site is surrounded by different kinds of building. The building next to the site is the former Melbourne Tramway & Omnibus Co Building. [A four storey brick office building with a basement and ground level retail. Designed by Twentyman & Askew in the Gothic Revival style and built by Thomas Machin in 1891]. And the building opposite to the site is the [Former Mail Exchange. A six storey steel framed brick building with one level of basement parking and another of retail. Designed in the Neo Grcian style by the Commonwealth Home Affairs Office Chief Architect John Smith Murdoch and built in 1917. Fully refurbished into offices with the inclusion of a ground level bar in 2008]. On the same side, there is a church as well. [St Augustines Church: Religious complex of church, school building, administration building and carpark. The [church a bluestone and sandstone building was designed by TA Kelly in the Gothic Revival manner and built by Reed & Stewart in 1869. The bell tower was a later addition constructed in 1929. The school house, now incorporated with the church, is a single storey brick building designed by JB Denny and built in 1881.]

The Stella Maris Centre is a two storey brick building built in 1973]. Those old buildings create the historical sense on Bourke Street. And the modern hotel, high rise apartment and modern plaza are also around. Form the fabric and texture of different buildings, people can feel the change of time around this place

IDEAS & CONCEPT My initial thought about the theatre design is something that mixes the “past” and “now”. The combination of “history” and “present”; “classic” and “modern”. I really want to express something “post-modern” which references to the past but still in the modern form. In this case, I was thinking applying different styles in “exterior” and “interior”. It could be about the forms and color, or layout and circulation. I have to think about more. In terms of the “historical expression”, I am thinking about the British Style. Not the general classic traditional building, but specific to British. The name of the theatre is “THE CONAN DOYLE MYSTERY THEATRE”, I want to focus on the Sherlock Holmes theme. The story of Sherlock is very classical and people are telling the story in the new ways such as the BBS TV series SHERLOCK and the US TV ELEMENTARY. The same characters, the same stories, but people interpret them in the modernist way. The BBS’s SHERLOCK is my favorite TV series, it keeps all the essences of classical Sherlock story that first published in 1887 in the 2012 TV series. (the actors and the story settings are all perfect!)

With the love of Sherlock Holmes, I decide to design the theatre to have the British Style Feeling. (the attitude) And keep it modern. Just like any of the post-modern architecture, the theatre should make people happy and they should have fun before they get to the show. Something that attractive and interesting.
