Precedent Study
Name: The High Line Architect: James Corner Field Operations and Diller Scofidio + Renfro Location: New York Project Year: 2011 Photographs: Iwan Baan
Description: The 1.45 mile long, abandoned elevated railway is now became a leisure park. This project inspired by the melancholic, where nature has reclaimed on this urban infrastructure, the High Line also is aimed to represent a post-industrial instrument of leisure. The fold stone turns into wood as an interesting point that provides a combination of industry and nature. It also applies to my previous and current P/L/P model where I extend the folding to a frame structure, and arrange these structures in a regular shape.

Precedent Study
Name: LiYuan Library Architect: Li Xiaodong Atelier Location: Beijing Project Year: 2011 Photographs: Li Xiaodong

Description: This project is located at the outskirts of Beijing, a two hours’ drive from Beijing urban area. It aims to form a modern small library and reading space within a quiet contemplation, and also by using the architecture to explore the feeling within the natural landscape. Hence the site was chose in the nearby mountains. The views from interior act as an embracing shelter, which means the building is fully surrounded by wooden sticks as outside and fully glazed as inside to both towards surrounding landscape and allows the daylight. It gives a hint of how does a building in relation to mountains since I would like to practice my skill for designing a structure that can along the hill side. Therefore it is useful for me to understand the feeling between a building and natural landscape.

Description: The Meditation House is described as “a place of contemplation and retreat blending into the natural surroundings and landscape”. Resembling a giant fallen rock is situated on the top of the hill which facing the seaside, is the prayer hall – Musallā – reflects the owner’s relationship with God. By walking down the prayer hall, is the main house that designed by a pure geometric stone mass with basis structure. How does a building work underground can be learned from this typical house. It gives an idea that the house can be semi-opened along the hill side, also help me to understand how does the natural light applies to it.

PERSPECTIVE (MASS MODEL)
The measurement of Mass drawing has done initially. Hence, by using the data from drawing, a section drawing in Rhino can be drawn. As my Mass model is symmetric volume, the only thing I need to do in Rhino is to draw the width of digital model, and then mirror the existed portion by using the line of width. However I have been told that the complicated digital model would be able to print out from 3D printer, so I intercepted my entry rather than the entire mass digital model. Only a few tools I have used in Rhino. At the beginning, as my lack knowledge of digital software, I only used line to draw it. After tech session, I learnt to use surface command to form a surface of my entry, and then extrude the surface to a solid.

3.0 HERRING ISLAND A PLACE FOR KEEPING SECRET

Site Analysis Location & Topography: The site is located at the southwest of Herring Island – between the Granite sculpture and the small dock. The environment of the north side of the site is surrounded by bush and grove. The topography on north side is lower due to it closes to Yarra River. On the other hillside – south side of the hill is much higher due to it closes to the main pathway and ground. But the density of trees is much lower than north side. Noise: Usually comes from the central open space on the island since there is a playground with BBQ. Less people would pass through the site except for people who doing Earth, by observed about 30 minutes, and therefore it is a nice and quiet space with great view of Yarra River, and becomes one of the reason for placing Secret. Pedestrians: Since some people does not identify there is another lower pathway on the other side of the hill at the West point (where the Granite sculpture it is), the north side of the site is less busy than south side. Sunlight & Wind: Although the south side is shady side, the hill is not high enough to block the sunlight passes through, both side can receive the sunlight either in summer or winter. Wind is not the significant consideration of the site due to trees block the most of the wind.

The opportunity of selected site is that the dense trees covered the hill on north side, and it is hard to observe the hill top. I found that this can be my place to keep secret and people would not be easy to identify my secret here. Sketch A shows the north side of hill; Sketch B shows the difference between south and north side.

Concept & Sketch Design
From my understanding of secret, it is like people know you are keeping a secret, but no one knows what is it and where is it. The inspiration is from Alex’s lecture for Secret, there was a slide showing full screen of trees, he said that a person was hiding within those trees, but he never found that person. This situation is similar to my selected site, it enhanced my determination of the core of idea – hiding the secret. A sketch is done in the early time. What I want to express is a building with two entries which is hidden by hill and trees.

Final Design Model Rather than providing two entries for the building, the entry on south hill side is instead by the glass window. People can see what happen inside, but cannot find out the way to get into building nearby due to the only entry is on the other side of hill. As the inspiration is from Alex’s lecture, the difference between his slide and my idea is that a hint will be given to people for finding the secret. The hill stair is a general and simple stair, once if people is mistaken that it is just a stair for climbing hill, the secret will be missed out anyway.

Reflection
Throughout the semester, I have learnt multidisciplinary skills from the subject. From lectures, I have learnt various tectonics, such as Point/Line/Plane, Frame and Infill, and Mass; and methods of drawing and model. From studio, I have learnt the essential of exchanging ideas/feedback with tutor and classmates, and practice my presentation skill. From the task itself, I have learnt how to gain a result from generating an idea to making a model; it represents a project starts from a sketch or a point, and then the idea like a snowball getting bigger and bigger, by doing research or precedent study. What I found challenge is the time. Because last year when I was doing Designing Environments, it was like spend the whole semester for working on in my project; this year for Earth Studio, we only got have semester for working on Secret, the schedule is very tight, and the work is very heavy. Another challenge is the final presentation sheet. This is my first time to layout all my work into two A1 sheet, the proportion of each component is the problem for me. My final Secret still has many aspects to improve. For the design itself, the journey of interior still has many potential to discover, such as different functions within the building. For myself, I found that the presentation skill is my weakness since I am so nervous in every time; also, I still need to put a lot of effort on digital applications, this can fill in my shortage of presentation. However, we still have much to learn, learning will never stop.
