2016 ECONOMIC & COMMUNITY BENEFIT PROFILE
///////////////////////////////////////////// My first year as President of St. Joseph’s Prep has been an incredibly rewarding experience. As an alumnus and a Jesuit, I have watched the Prep evolve over the past few decades from afar, and now the Society of Jesus has called me home to Philadelphia, I see the type of young man who chooses the Prep firsthand, and that has given me a wonderful understanding of the role the Prep plays in the history of our city. We attract young men whose families want something different—something special—for their sons, and our Jesuit education has provided that something special for 165 years. -REV. JOHN W. SWOPE, SJ ’72, PRESIDENT
A COMMUNITY CONTINUUM FOR GENERATIONS, ST. JOSEPH’S PREPARATORY SCHOOL HAS BEEN IMPACTING THE CITY WE CALL HOME. Since its founding in 1851, the Prep has remained committed to Philadelphia. When other institutions chose “greener” pastures of suburban campuses, the Prep opted to stay in town, even rebuilding after a devastating fire in 1966. Today, it still stands in North Philadelphia, an anchor for a developing neighborhood, and a symbol of faith and justice to all those living there. St. Joseph’s Prep serves as a magnet for boys from the Delaware Valley, drawing in the best and brightest young men from the city itself, the surrounding PA suburbs, and New Jersey, to study at the Prep. Those young men, in turn, go on to become leaders in their faith, their professions and their communities. They start families. Buy homes. Engage in service, and become pillars of their communities. And oftentimes, they send their own sons to their beloved alma mater, starting the cycle over again. This continuum has lasted for more than a century and a half and touched the lives of thousands of Philadelphians. This report reflects that continuum:
which leads them out into the world, to study at the best colleges and universities...
Students coming from all over, into the city, to attend the Prep and receive its Jesuit education...
often to return to Philadelphia and return the favor, serving their city with insight, integrity, and passion.

SERVING THE COMMUNITY STANDING TALL IN NORTH PHILLY—OCCUPYING THE BLOCKS FROM GIRARD TO THOMPSON AND 17TH TO RIDGE—THE PREP AND THE CHURCH OF THE GESU HAVE BEEN CORNERSTONES OF THIS NEIGHBORHOOD SINCE THE 1870s. At the time, the area was mostly wooded with a few homes beginning to emerge. As the neighborhood grew and the population swelled, the Jesuits’ North Philadelphia mission grew with it—a parish with bustling schools and more. Parents view the Prep as a place where they send their son to get ahead—to get an education that enables him to provide for his family, as well as the community. The Prep continues to be this neighborhood resource. The school hosts neighborhood block captain meetings, local CYO basketball practices, and swim lessons for boys and girls from the surrounding communities. ADDITIONALLY, ST. JOSEPH’S PREP STUDENTS, FACULTY AND STAFF SERVE THROUGHOUT THE COMMUNITY: > tutoring at Gesu School
> donating books to PhilaREADS
> working at the Calcutta House
> collecting pajamas for the Camden’s Child
> serving meals at St. Francis Inn
Development Center
> building homes with Habitat for Humanity
> distributing socks to Philadelphia’s
> ensuring that the Archdiocese’s Nutritional

Development Services has needed supplies for summer In addition, each Thanksgiving and Christmas, the Prep community proudly partners with local block captains to ensure that many residents have happy holidays by providing food and toys to families nearby.
Each year, the Prep community donates food and other items to help feed more than 250 families for Thanksgiving.

The Catholic HEART Workcamp offers more than 40 camps across the country each summer that bring young people together to serve and Philly stands alone in offering an urban service experience where students can walk to their service sites, meet people in and around the neighborhood, and leave feeling as though they’ve been immersed in a community for one week. All of this is possible because of the willingness of St. Joseph’s Prep to host over 200 volunteers each summer. -RICH PUGH, MANAGER, CATHOLIC HEART WORKCAMP PHILADELPHIA
It’s a blessing from God to see young men being taught to give back to the community that they come into weekly. To see young men work together and serve is a real blessing and wonderful. -DONNA PRICE, BLOCK CAPTAIN, 1900 MASTER STREET

COMING BACK, GIVING BACK THE ALUMNI NETWORK OF ST. JOSEPH’S PREP IS LEGENDARY. Rooted in the tenants of open mindedness and social justice, Jesuit education encourages its students to look further, think differently, and see beyond themselves. Prep alumni, as products of this education, excel in a variety of areas, and return to their roots, and their city, to give back. Prep graduates are CEOs of prominent Philadelphia companies; they are leaders of some of the city’s most public trusts (Central HS, City Hall, etc.); and as of this year, they lead the city’s three prominent Jesuit institutions—St. Joseph’s Prep, Saint Joseph’s University and Old St. Joseph’s Church. It seems everywhere you turn, Prep alumni are leading from the front while also filling the ranks below. In large numbers, Preppers have returned to the city after graduating from college, choosing to stake their lives on the success of Philadelphia.
The leaders of the three Jesuit missions in Philadelphia are Prep graduates: (l-r) Saint Joseph’s University President Dr. Mark Reed ’92, St. Joseph’s Prep President Rev. John W. Swope, SJ ’72 and Old St. Joseph’s Church Pastor Rev. Phil Florio, SJ ’83.

/////////////////////////////////////////////// St. Joe’s Prep has, from an educational and growth standpoint, had the greatest influence on my life. Many of the things I learned here as a young man are the lessons that stayed with me throughout my life. -MICHAEL NUTTER ’75, FORMER MAYOR OF PHILADELPHIA
Last January, when Michael Nutter ‘75 passed the Office of Mayor of Philadelphia to Jim Kenney ‘76, it marked the first time in the 300+ year history of this noted metropolis that a high school had produced two consecutive mayors. Add two members of City Council and it’s clear: Preppers run this city!
Together, the Prep and the Jesuits taught me that you can never truly be happy unless you are in service to others. -JIM KENNEY ’76, MAYOR OF PHILADELPHIA

One day when I was in class at Temple Law, my instructor told us not to include our high school on our resume...with one exception: unless you went to St. Joseph’s Prep. ‘Seems every lawyer in Philadelphia went to the Prep and you definitely will want to note that.’ So I did. -TEMPLE LAW STUDENT & PREP ALUM

ECONOMIC BENEFIT

SUPPORTING THE LOCAL ECONOMY SINCE ITS ARRIVAL IN NORTH PHILADELPHIA IN THE LATE 19TH CENTURY, THE PREP HAS INVESTED IN ITS NEIGHBORHOOD. Beyond serving those in North Philadelphia, the Prep contributes financially to the local economy and has a substantial impact on businesses in the area. By investing in facilities and infrastructure on its own site, as well as creating employment opportunities and incentive for those looking to live and work in Philadelphia, the Prep fosters its commitment to the city and encourages local business and community resources in the neighborhoods surrounding the school. Through school-sponsored trips, our students are given access to museums, historic sites, government buildings, and restaurants. This year, the Prep’s proms were held at two of the city’s best-known institutions: the Union League and Lincoln Financial Field. As a city school, we are proud to give our students exposure to the best locations Philadelphia has to offer.
ALUMNI Tens of thousands of students learned to navigate the city during their high school days at the Prep. Comfort on SEPTA and driving in the city is a badge of honor for alums, many of whom return to the city to live. Prep alumni currently fill apartments and homes in neighborhoods like Center City, OId City, Fairmount, Fishtown, Northern Liberties, and beyond. It’s true: their days at the Prep definitely kindled in them a love for Philadelphia.
The Prep’s impact on our region’s business, political and charitable communities is unmatched anywhere— here or nationally. -STEVE FERA ’82, SR. VP., PUBLIC AFFAIRS, INDEPENDENCE BLUE CROSS

PARENTS
The Prep’s location has long been a benefit to its faculty and staff, many of whom call the surrounding neighborhoods home.
While waiting on their sons at school, Prep parents spend a lot of time in local shops and area coffeehouses, as well as enjoying meals in restaurants throughout Fairmount, Fishtown, Northern Liberties, and Francisville. In addition, the school utilizes many of those same establishments to host alumni and other school functions.
Working at the Prep has given my husband, Jason, and I another reason to live in the city, in a neighborhood that is vibrant, beautiful, and active. We have a passion for helping adults get vitally needed education and our neighborhood gives us proximity to agencies that share that passion, agencies such as ProjectHOME, Congreso, and The Mayor’s Commission on Literacy. We feel like we are able to make a small difference. -SONIA NELSON, LIBRARIAN, ST. JOSEPH’S PREP
The city location of the Prep is not only good for our sons, it is good for the whole family. We often combine trips to the Prep with dinner out. We especially love Pizzeria Vetri in Fairmount, the sandwiches at Paesano’s on West Girard, and great food and shopping at Reading Terminal Market. Even though our sons can drive to school on their own, we still offer to drive so we can enjoy being in town! -MOLLYE READINGER-SCOTT (PARENT ’17 & ’19)
One hallmark for St. Joe’s Prep over the years has been innovation and change. During its time in North Philadelphia, the Prep has continually improved its campus through renovation and new additions, most especially the rebuild of the campus after the fire of 1966. The school now has updated facilities, ensuring its future success. In addition, the school has worked with the City to renovate a municipal field into a state-ofthe-art football/lacrosse facility as well as put a new Boathouse on Kelly Drive. Over the next decade, the Prep plans to improve its entrance and parking areas, upgrade its theatre and library as well as install the most up-to-date safety systems. THESE PROJECTS HAVE BEEN COMPLETED BY LOCAL CONTRACTORS, CONSTRUCTION COMPANIES, AND ARCHITECTS, ADDING JOBS AND DOLLARS TO THE ECONOMY.
