Introduction The Associated Students (A.S.) Resource Guide directs you to services, programs and resources at SJSU. Many of the services will require your student ID. Make sure to pick up your student ID at the Bursar’s Office in the Student Services Center and have it with you at all times.

If you do not find the resources you need, we encourage you to ask around and share what you may find. It’s a good idea to refer these resources to a friend or classmate. If you have questions, you can visit any of our A.S. departments or reach out to a student leader in the A.S. Board of Directors. Academic Resources Student Academic Success Services sjsu.edu/tutoring/ Mentoring Hub and Tutoring Hub Description: You don’t have to tackle SJSU alone. A mentor takes the time to understand and give you personalized advice to succeed. Register online at sjsu.edu/mentoring/ Location: Student Services Center 600 Peer Connections peerconnections.sjsu.edu Description: Peer Connections provides services such as peer tutoring, mentoring, workshops and supplemental classroom instruction. Assistance is available for one-on-one and small group sessions. Writing Center sjsu.edu/writingcenter Description: One-on-one tutoring sessions to help you improve academic and professional writing skills. The center offers workshops and original online writing guides. Location: Clark Hall 126 Hours: Mon-Thurs: 9:30am - 5:30pm, Fri: 9:30am - 2pm Appointment: Go to the website and read what to expect, how to register online and how to schedule appointments. Appointments open seven days in advance. Communication Studies Center commcenter.sjsu.edu Description: Tutoring, mentoring, and workshops to help with public speaking, writing, and communication skills. Go to their website to learn about workshops and events. Location: Hugh Gillis Hall 229 Hours: Mon-Thurs: 10:30am - 4:30pm Appointment: Go online to schedule an appointment with a tutor or go to their office for a drop-in session.

College of Science Advising Center (CoSAC) sjsu.edu/cosac/tutoring/index Description: One-on-one or group tutoring for Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Math, and Physics. You can sign-up for a one-hour long session or two 30-minute sessions per week. Location: Duncan Hall 213 Appointment: Review the available courses for tutoring, and book appointments on the CoSAC website. Walk-in appointments are based on availability. Coffee with a Professor sjsu.edu/studentaffairs/about_us/chatwithaprof Description: Free gift card to take your professor or teacher’s assistant out for a cup of coffee to any of the cafes on campus. Available to all SJSU undergraduate students. Appointment: First talk to your professor or teacher’s assistant. Sign-up and get your free card at the Center for Faculty Affairs in IRC 213. General Advising sjsu.edu/aars Description: General Education Advisers help you stay on track with your general education course requirements and serve to assist you with understanding university requirements and processes. Location: Student Services Center (SCC), 9th and San Fernando Hours: Mon-Thurs: 8:15am - 4:45pm, Fri: 9:00am - 1:30pm Appointment: Go to the SSC office or call (408) 924-2129 to schedule a 30-minute session. 10-15 minute drop-in sessions are available depending on availability. Technology services and repairs include free 15-minute tech consultations; free diagnostics, repair, backup and optimization services for computers and mobile devices; daily/weekly/monthly laptop rentals; and computer lab with 30 freeto-use sit-down stations. Student Technology Training Center Description: Help with Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, iMovie, SPSS, and other software programs. Assistance is available through email, one on one or group sessions. E-mail librarytechtrainer@sjsu.edu to make an appointment. Location: MLK Library, 4th floor (next to SCS) 6

Clark Hall Computer Lab sjsu.edu/at/hd Description: Over 30 desktop Apple and Windows computers and four editing stations on reserve. Visit the IT Service Desk with your ID. Location: Clark Hall 102 Hours: Mon-Thurs: 8am - 9:45pm, Fri: 8am - 4:45pm IT Service Desk sjsu.edu/at/hd Description: The IT Desk provides assistance with connecting to campus Wi-Fi and downloadable software programs. Hours and Location: same at the Clark Hall Computer Lab. Instructional Resource Center (IRC) sjsu.edu/at/ms Description: Free audio and visual equipment rental including cameras, camcorders, microphones, sound systems, voice recording equipment, and tripods. Location: The IRC. Building, next to Dudley Moorhead Hall Hours: Mon-Thurs: 7:30am - 9:45pm Fri: 7:30am - 4:00pm Reservation: Check out equipment in-person on a first-come, first-served basis or call (408) 924-2888 to reserve in advance. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library library.sjsu.edu Description: Quiet and silent study spaces on floors 6 - 8, and group study spaces on floors 2 - 5; reliable and fast Wi-Fi; self-service printing, scanning, and copying on the 1st, 2nd, and 4th floors; and self-checkout machines. Location: North West corner of campus, 4th and San Fernando Hours: Open seven days a week. For students, Sunday through Thursday. The library is open 24 hours during midterms and finals. Spartan Floor (Fourth Floor) library.sjsu.edu/about/spartan-floor Description: This floor is exclusive for SJSU students. Provides individual and group study spaces, and the SCS where you can rent laptops and equipment, and receive technical assistance. Reserve a Study Room library.sjsu.edu/reserve-studymeetingroom/reserve-studymeeting-room Description: These study rooms can be reserved for one hour for individual and group study. Rooms seat between 4 to 12 people. Most rooms come with a monitor and whiteboard. Reservations: To book a room online, you need your Student ID number and Library Card. Book larger rooms one or two days in advance. Subject Librarians library.sjsu.edu/staff-directory/sjsu-library-subject-liaisons Description: Your major department or college offers library liaisons who help you navigate the databases of journals, articles, and books. Find your liaison online or ask about them at your college’s Success Center. 7


Health, Wellness and Safety Student Health Center sjsu.edu/studenthealth Description: Unlimited, free, and low-cost primary care medical services to students enrolled at SJSU. Go online to see a full list of clinical services. Location: Student Wellness Center, 7th Street Plaza (across from the Event Center) Hours: Mon-Thurs: 8:30am - 5:30pm, Fri: 8:30am - 4:30pm Appointment: Complete the necessary forms online or in-person at the Wellness Center front desk. Then schedule a consultation online, at the front desk, or by calling (408) 924-6122. For the after-hours nurse, call (866) 935-6347.

Food Resources sjsu.edu/food Description: About half of all SJSU students reported that they sometimes skip meals due to cost.* If you’ve struggled to afford food while attending SJSU, take advantage of the services provided. *Fall 2014 Student Food Access Survey Contact: If you have questions or suggestions, e-mail feedingspartans@sjsu.edu Food Shelf Program sjsu.edu/food Description: These small bookshelves or tables, located throughout campus, offer free non-perishable food items and snacks. Locations: Go online and click the ‘On-Campus’ icon on the left for a list and map of locations. Hours: All shelves are accessible during the operating hours of the spaces where these are located.

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) sjsu.edu/counseling Description: Free personal counseling. CAPS counselors help with time management, adjusting to college, creating meaningful relationships, and coping with crises. Location: Student Wellness Center, Room 300B - 7th Street Plaza (across from the Event Center) Hours: Mon-Thurs: 8:30am - 5:30pm, Fri: 8:30am - 4:30pm Appointment: Call (408) 924-5910 or go online.

Just In Time (Mobile Food Pantry) http://www.sjsu.edu/wellness/foodresources/oncampus/ Description: Provides up to $100 worth of free groceries (including rice, breads, beans, fruit, veggies, frozen meat, and canned foods) donated by Second Harvest Food Bank. This program is for students in need of additional food assistance. Bring multiple reusable bags and your student ID. Location: Event Center Hours: Occurs on a monthly basis. Hours can be found under “Just in Time” in the above web address.

Wellness & Health Promotion (Lounge) sjsu.edu/wellness Description: Comfortable and peaceful space to study, connect and hang out. Resources in the lounge include: the condom co-op, massage chairs, food resources, one-on-one health educator consultations, fun activities (games, movies, etc.), and calendars of upcoming events. Location: Student Wellness Center, 7th Street Plaza (across from the Event Center) Hours: Mon-Thurs: 9am - 5:30pm, Fri: 9am - 4:30pm

Associated Students Campus Community Garden as.sjsu.edu/cccac Description: The Associated Students Community Garden provides free organic fruits and vegetables grown by and for students. The garden also offers fun and productive volunteer experiences. Location: San Salvador Street between 8th and 9th Street (across the street from The Commons and the Joe West Dorms) Hours: Check website for up-to-date hours.

Peer Health Education (PHE) sjsu.edu/wellness/peer_health_education Description: PHE promotes health and well-being at SJSU through outreach events and delivery of evidence-based workshops addressing topics such as: nutrition, sexual wellness, violence prevention, alcohol, marijuana and other drugs, body image, and rest and relaxation. The Breakfast Club and Food for Thought peerconnections.sjsu.edu/breakfastclub Description: Free bread and pastries donated by Spartan Shops. Location: Food for Thought is available all day in the Student Wellness Center Lounge on 7th St. Plaza. Hours: Both programs operate Monday through Friday. The Breakfast Club is available from 10:00am - 1:00pm in the Peer Connections Office in the Student Services Center.

CALFRESH/ Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) sjsu.edu/wellness/foodresources/oncampus Description: This program provides financial assistance to purchase food at grocery stores and farmer’s markets. Appointment: Go to mybenefitscalwin.org to see if you are eligible. Find out where to receive assistance with the application process online. CHEW (Cooking Healthy Eating Well) sjsu.edu/wellness/foodresources/oncampus Description: Hands-on learning experience where students learn how to prepare cheap and healthy meals. Sign-up for a free session online. Location: Student Health Center Free Food at Events @SJSUFreeFood on Twitter Description: Follow @SJSUFreeFood on Twitter to find out where food will be given out on campus. Take pictures of food you see after events that is accessible to students, get the organizer’s approval, and tweet it to @SJSUFreeFood. Online Resources sjsu.edu/wellness/foodresources/eatingwell “Eating Well on a Budget” How to cook cheap, easy, and healthy meals. Videos on how to cook items found at the food shelves. RECREATION Sport Club (Recreation Center) Description: The Sport Club provides free gym membership for all SJSU students. Amenities include: multipurpose room, weight room, aerobics room, dance studio, racquetball courts, mini-gym, cardio equipment, and locker rooms. Location: 7th Street Plaza (next to the Event Center) Group Fitness http://www.sjsu.edu/spartanrec/programs/Fitness/GroupFit/ Description: Over 40 hours of free group fitness classes are offered per week. Some of these classes include, but not limited to; boot camp, Insanity, UJam, yoga, and zumba. Outdoor Adventures sjsu.edu/spartanrec/programs/Adventures Description: Low cost day-long and overnight trips including hiking, backpacking, camping, rock-climbing, and surfing.

Intramural Sports sjsu.edu/spartanrec/programs/Intramurals/index Description: Student-run casual and competitive sports teams. Some IM sports include volleyball, soccer, basketball, and dodgeball. Club Sports sjsu.edu/studentunion/clubsports/index Description: Club Sports consists of over 20 highly competitive teams that travel and compete regionally. Teams include soccer, volleyball, ultimate frisbee, salsa, and quidditch. Towel and Locker Rental sjsu.edu/kinesiology/locker_rental Description: Access a locker and receive one clean towel per visit for only a $10 fee per semester. Location: Spartan Complex Building (SPX) Appointment: Pay the fee online at commerce.cashnet.com/kinsjsu SAFETY AND EMERGENCY RESOURCES Blue Light Phones Description: The blue telephone poles across campus connect you with the University Police Department (UPD). Use these phones to report an emergency or suspicious activity, to request an escort, or get motorist assistance. SJSU Safety Escort Program sjsu.edu/police/programs/escort Description: If you feel unsafe on campus and need help getting home, Police Service Assistants (PSAs) provide escorts for up to two blocks off-campus. SJSU Safe Ride Program sjsu.edu/police/programs/shuttle Description: The SJSU Safe Ride Program provides safe rides further than the Safety Escort Program. SJSUCares sjsu.edu/sjsucares Description: This program directs students to emergency, food, housing and medical assistance. Financial Aid and Scholarship Office sjsu.edu/faso/ Description: The Financial Aid and Scholarship Office provides quality educational financing options, while delivering consistent, equitable, and timely services to student aid applicants at San JosĂŠ State University. In addition to federal and state funding, the Financial Aid and Scholarship Office connects students with campus scholarship opportunities and other off campus resources. Services include assistance in applying for FAFSA, California Dream Act, and Calfresh (food stamps); information on aid options (grants, work-study, loans, middle-class scholarship); administering scholarships (SJSU Campus, Department, Private based); and financial literacy workshops. SJSU Handshake https://sjsu.joinhandshake.com/login Description: SJSU’s official job and internship database that includes on and off-campus, part-time, full-time, internship, and career positions. Currently enrolled SJSU students and registered alumni have access to this 24/7 online resource. In addition to your Handshake application, remember to submit an application for Work Study or Student Assistant position form to the designated hiring department. Involvement Opportunities STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS Getting involved with a club or an organization is the best way to meet new people and expand your network. Look out for student organizations tabling during the first few weeks of school. Chavez Community Action Center (CCCAC) as.sjsu.edu/cccac Description: Mentoring K-12 students, tending to the community garden, conducting campus Legacy Tours, providing community service opportunities, fighting student hunger, and much more. Associated Students Child Development Center as.sjsu.edu/ascdc Description: NAEYC accredited childcare and educational program for children of SJSU students, faculty and staff. Offers part-time jobs, internships, and volunteer hours for students majoring in child development. Location: 460 South 8th Street (by the A.S. EQUIPMENT RENTAL Associated Students Equipment Rental Program as.sjsu.edu/asevents Description: You can rent equipment for your activity or event. Tents, folding tables, folding chairs, and carnival games available for rent. Carts and dollies may be available but renters should be prepared to transport equipment without them. How to Reserve: All equipment is reserved on a first-come, first-served basis. Visit the website and click on ‘Equipment Rental’ to fill out the form. Frequently Asked Questions What’s the best way to meet new people? Dozens of events take place on campus each week. This gives you an opportunity to reach out to different organizations on campus. If you want to join an organization, a great place to start is through Student Involvement. You can also download the Sammy Mobile App to have all campus opportunities just a click away. How do I save money on textbooks? Chegg, Amazon, and the “SJSU Textbooks for sale” FB page. If you qualify for Financial Aid, the voucher for the Affordable Textbook Program from the A.S. General Services Center is available for a limited amount. The “Friends of the Library Bookstore” on the First level of the MLK library also offers discounts and deals. How do I find off-campus housing? For a more student-oriented webpage than craigslist, check out the public Facebook page ‘SJSU Student Off-Campus Housing.’ Students post daily on this page looking for roommates or offering rooms to rent by campus. What if I’m having thoughts of suicide or self-harm? You don’t have to feel alone. Nearly half of all college students experience thoughts of suicide at some point. Call the 24/7 County Suicide Prevention hotline (855) 278-4204. Make an appointment with a Counseling and Psychological Services counselor by calling (408) 924-5910. Where is the best place to hang out on campus? Associated Students House, grassy areas on campus such as the A.S. Lawn, Tommie Smith and John Carlos statues and Tower Lawn, the Diaz Compean Student Union and Duncan Hall Quad. What should I do if I think I’m going to fail a class? Don’t be afraid if you’re falling behind, it happens to most students. Go to the Advising Hub at sjsu.edu/advising/. Reach out to Associated Students directors during their office hours for help, this information can be found at as.sjsu.edu. Peer Connections is also a great place for academic help. What If I get put on a waitlist for a class? If you’re on a waitlist, you should show up during the first couple weeks of class and wait for an add code. Students who are enrolled in the class are dropped if they don’t show up. 25


A.S. Departments How do I navigate campus policy and Administration? Each A.S. Board of Director student has 3 office hours per week. They can help you find the proper channels to address an issue you have with a policy or the University Administration. Start by visiting as.sjsu.edu or the Government Office in the Diaz Compean Student Union to schedule a meeting with a director. What do I do if I witness or experience a crime or suspicious activity? To send an anonymous tip about a crime or suspicious activity, call or text University Police Department at (408) 337-2919. How do I avoid the “freshman 15”? There are nutritionists in the Health Center who can help you manage your food habits. Where can I go to see the list of all current clubs at San Jose State? Go to the Student Involvement webpage at sjsu.edu/getinvolved/studentorgs and click on the Registered Student Organization (RSO) Directory. How can I graduate on time or perhaps even earlier? If you are able to handle it and your schedule permits, take at least 15 units per semester, or 12 in the Fall/Spring and a Winter/Summer class. You need 120 units to graduate. 15/semester x 2 semesters/year = 30 units/year. 4 years = 120 units.
