Through the work of the Refugee Committee and Refugee Welcome Team, St. John’s Vancouver is reaching out to refugees in a couple ways: 1. Sponsorship. We have made an application to bring a Christian Afghan family to Vancouver which has been accepted and are awaiting their arrival. 2. Assistance to claimants in Metro Vancouver. Our members are working to assist displaced families that arrive in our city without sponsorship or support. As Christians, we are eager to help refugees because it is part of our DNA. Throughout the Biblical narrative we see how God’s people are expected to welcome the stranger and times when they are the stranger themselves: • The Old Testament requires God’s people to welcome and provide for the stranger. • God’s people were enslaved in Egypt. • Jesus began his life as a refugee in Egypt. • Jesus teaches that we are to care for those who are vulnerable. Whatever we do for others, we do for him. REFUGEE SUPPORT - BASIC TRAINING DAY To help us fulfill our calling, we want to encourage any adult members of St. John’s to consider a day of training where we will learn how to welcome and care for displaced people. Whether you have experience sponsoring refugee families or have never been involved, this training is for you. Our partners in the Journey Home Community, experts in training for refugee assistance, will be presenting the workshop. Some of the things you will learn: • Introduction to the refugee community • Canada’s refugee protection system • Accompaniment and support for refugee families • Experiencing the refugee journey • Building healthy and supportive relationships with displaced people • Providing direct resettlement support The training will happen on Saturday, May 26, between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm at the church office (2325 Burrard Street).
