ASCENSION DAY SERVICE & SUPPER | MAY 10 The Bible tells us that Christ’s ascension took place 40 days after his resurrection, and while our celebration of Easter is an important and joyful time, it is important for us to remember also our Lord’s ascension to his throne in heaven. Jesus’ ascension assures us that he rules over all creation with the Father and by the Holy Spirit. Were it not for his ascendancy, chaos would ensue throughout the earth, but through his shepherding in heaven, world order is in his hands. Join us on May 10 at 6:00 pm for a special Ascension Day Service with a children’s program for ages four to grade six, followed by a wood fired pizza supper to celebrate and commemorate Jesus’ ascension into heaven. The cost of the meal is $5 per person and $20 per family. Please register at sjvan.org/events. WOMEN’S EVENING BIBLE STUDY Women’s Ministry is running a six week study in the book of Philippians on Thursdays at 7:00 pm through May 31. Email katy@ sjvan.org for more information. MISSIONS LUNCH | TODAY We will be hearing from Canons John Mchakama and Will Madi from Malawi! Lunch will be held in the fellowship hall after the 11:00 am service ends. The cost of the meal is $5/individual or $10/family.

SENIOR’S MINISTRY | MAY 15 Join us for tea and coffee in the church chapel on Tuesday, May 15 at 1:30 pm. Sharyn Thompson has been working in West Africa since 1989. Over the years, she has seen how lives are transformed when people have access to God’s Word in a language they understand well and will be sharing some of these stories. Please RSVP to Margaret Wilson at margaret@sjvan.org or call 778 838-7400. EVENSONG | MAY 8 Join us for Evensong this Tuesday at 5:30 pm, followed by supper together. Our Malawian visitors, Canons Will Madi and John Mchakama, will be with us. Of all the services at St. John’s, the monthly Evensong is probably the best kept secret. Come and pray, sing God’s praises, and enjoy the best meal in the neighbourhood with good friends.

CONDOLENCE

Ambassadors: Christ in the Public Square

On April 30, Gloria Short died at 92 years old in Katoomba, near Sydney, Australia. The funeral will be held at St. Thomas’, North Sydney on May 7. Please pray for David as he travels to preach at his mother’s funeral, as well as for Bronwyn, Ben, Josh, Kelsey, and the extended Short family as they give thanks to the Lord for Gloria’s life of faithfulness and service to Christ and gospel ministry.

Over three days hear wise voices from many sectors of society—from medicine to politics, disaster relief to urban geography—as they share their challenges and successes in representing Christ in their public lives. Hear also from Christian leaders as they explore the role of the church in pursuing the common good. God is at work in society. Let’s learn together how we can join in his work skilfully and graciously. For more information visit regent-college.edu/about-us/events

MEET A COUPLE OF SUPER CANONS! In an era of superheroes, real-life champions can be overlooked, which is one reason the title “canon” helps us honour Christians who go above and beyond. St. John’s is delighted to welcome two distinguished guests from our partner parishes in Malawi, Canon John Mchakama and Canon Will Madi. Canon John Mchakama was trained at Zomba Theological college (the seminary where St. John’s sponsors students each year.) Since his ordination in 2001, Canon John has done just about everything. As a parent, he and his wife Ruth have five daughters. As a priest, he’s overseen multiple parishes and at one point was responsible for fourteen congregations! He’s been the Diocesan HIV and AIDS Coordinator as well as the Malaria Prevention Project Coordinator. He has been the hospital administrator at St. Martin’s and managed the Malindi Community Skills Development Centre, an employment training program for young people that teaches carpentry, welding, tailoring, and computer skills. Oh yes, and he loves to sing! Canon Will Madi is young for a Canon, but he’s done a lot in his ten years as a priest, serving as Bishop’s Chaplain and Diocesan Training Chaplain. He currently serves as Clergy representative and board member for St Luke’s College of Nursing, where his wife Lucia has just finished her studies in nursing and midwifery. Together they have two sons. And guess what? He also likes to sing. Over the next week, join us in our sightseeing and ministry activities and as you chat with these men, ask what Christian faith looks like in Malawi, versus Vancouver. And consider joining the Summer 2019 team who will visit Africa!
