HELPING POINT TRIP 2018 | APPLICATION DEADLINE TODAY This summer St. John’s plans to send a team of four to six people to Helping Point in India. The primary purpose of the trip is to continue developing our relationship with our brothers and sisters in India. We also hope to grow in our knowledge and understanding of God’s work among all nations. If you would like an application to join the team please send an email to team@sjvan.org. CELEBRATING DAVID & DAN On Sunday, September 9 we will celebrate David Short’s 25th, and Dan Gifford’s 20th anniversary at the 10:00 am service. As part of the celebration, we invite you to write notes of congratulations and musings that we will deliver to them on the day. Please put your cards in a sealed envelope and either send it to the church office by mail or drop it off during Sunday services in June. Your envelope should indicate whether it is for Dan or David and marked “anniversary celebration”. Photos are welcomed. The address for the church office can be found on the back page.

BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENT
In 1998 the leadership of St. John’s identified that in Canada there was a distinct absence of suitable programs for the training of future clergy and ministry leaders for the Canadian Anglican Church. In response, St. John’s developed a training program called Artizo with a vision to identify, recruit, train, and equip young men and women for Christian leadership and vocational ministry.
Robin and Joyce Logan welcomed their baby girl Magdalene Eva Logan into the world last week. Mom and baby are doing well. Please pray for them as they adjust to a life with three!
In early 2018 The Artizo Institute Board completed an in-depth review of its operations and recognized that the curriculum required a wholesale review and refresh of the delivery of the program. To achieve this, both St. John’s and the Artizo Board decided that for at least the next two years its training program will be focused within St. John’s, and that the new Director of Training will be a staff member of St. John’s. Artizo will continue to perform fundraising for intern bursaries and to raise funds for curacy scholarships to successful Artizo graduates. The St. John’s Trustees and the Board of Artizo are very excited about this development and believe it will strengthen the quality of training, as well as our ability to identify and equip exceptional leaders in the Anglican church who are deeply committed to Jesus and His Gospel. CONDOLENCE Teri Howell, the sister of Glenn Howell and Maureen McCully, died from complications of lung cancer on May 30, 2018. She was surrounded by family and friends when she passed away, in Nanaimo, BC, as the song Hallelujah played. Memorials will be planned in Vancouver and Nanaimo in July. Thank you for your prayers for the family at this time. God is our hope.
CONDOLENCE On April 21, Brendan Hipp (19 years old), grandson of Donna and Peter Hipp, died in a tragic ATV accident on his parents’ property in Kelowna. The family moved from Vancouver to Kelowna one year ago. Brendan hoped to attend UBCO in September to study engineering. Please remember the Hipp family in your prayers, including grandparents Donna and Peter; parents David and Kinga; sister Paige; and aunt Linda Hipp. The memorial service for Brendan will be held on June 12, 3:00 pm at St. John’s (5350 Baillie St.) with a reception to follow in the hall.

– GAFCON 2018 – Proclaiming Christ Faithfully to the Nations This week four delegates from St. John’s will head to Jerusalem, as representatives of our church at Gafcon. Our delegates are David Short, Bronwyn Short, Dan Gifford, and Jeremy Graham; and David has been invited to be the final of four plenary speakers. He will be speaking on “God’s Strategy” which he sees as bringing God’s gospel to God’s world through God’s church. The conference this year will be the largest international gathering of Anglicans in fifty years with nearly 2,000 delegates from over fifty countries. The theme is “Proclaiming Christ Faithfully to the Nations” and the main goal is for delegates to engage with brothers and sisters from around the world, building Kingdom relationships to strengthen the mission of the Church and bring us closer together in fellowship.
What is Gafcon? Gafcon (the Global Anglican Future Conference) first gathered in 2008 at a time when the Anglican Communion was in crisis. They came together to guard the orthodox faith. Since that time it has matured into a global family of Anglicans focused on “proclaiming Christ faithfully to the Nations” together. Gafcon meets every five years, and this year is its 10th anniversary.
Please pray
• for our delegates as they travel and meet with fellow Anglicans in Jerusalem
• that God would do something fresh, which would have lasting good effect for the gospel through this conference
• for unity, equipping, and evangelism (for more information on this look at gafcon.org/news/chairmans-june-2018-letter which gives a good overview, and there is a link to a prayer sheet)
• for David to wisely pull together the threads of the conference for his plenary talk. That he will able to give focus, encouragement, and a challenge going forward.

David’s plenary session will be at 11:00 am (GMT+3) on Thursday, June 21 which means we can watch it in Vancouver at 1:00 am on Thursday, June 21.
