PARISH RETREAT | SEPTEMBER 21-23
ORDINATION
Have you registered for our our fourth annual parish retreat at Stillwood Camp? It’s going to be a great weekend to make new friends and deepen existing friendships. Chris Ley will be speaking throughout the weekend from 2 Peter on the topic of “Following Jesus in a World that doesn’t.” Registration is open on the website.
The Ordination of Arnold Mayorga to the diaconate will take place at St. John’s on Sunday August 26th at the 6pm Evening Service. Over the last several years Arnold was an Artizo student and then an intern at St. John’s working with men’s ministry and family ministries. He, his wife Michelle, and his children Amara and Augustine will be moving to Ottawa in September to take charge of two small ANiC churches in Blackburn Hamlet and Limoges, Ontario. You are all are invited to attend Arnold’s ordination and to pray for the Mayorga family as they begin this new ministry.
DIVORCE CARE | STARTING IN SEPTEMBER We will be starting a new DivorceCare group this fall. It will run on Thursday nights between 7:00 and 9:00 pm. The first session will be on September 20 and all sessions will happen at St. John’s Vancouver, 5350 Baillie Street. DivorceCare helps people recover from the pain of separation and divorce and is a support group that meets weekly for 13 weeks. Would this be helpful for you or someone that you know? ONLY 18 DAYS LEFT! On Sunday, September 9 we will celebrate David Short’s 25th, and Dan Gifford’s 20th anniversary at the 10:00 am service. As part of the celebration, we invite you to write notes of congratulations and musings that we will deliver to them on the day. Please put your cards in a sealed envelope and either send it to the church office by mail or drop it off during Sunday services in August. Your envelope should indicate whether it is for Dan or David and marked “anniversary celebration.” We need notes/cards/ect. before September 5. Photos are welcomed.

CONDOLENCES On July 27 Betty Chandler died after incurring a stroke. After her husband (Bill’s) death Betty moved to Chilliwack from the North Shore to be close to family. Betty’s memorial service will take place on August 25, at 11:00 am at Henderson’s Funeral Home: 45901 Victoria Ave, Chilliwack. If you plan to attend please email your intentions to Jack and Irena Tippett (jctippett@shaw.ca). Please pray for Betty and Bill’s children including Liz Oberholtzer, Paul Chandler and family. On October 7 at 9:00 AM, St. John’s Learner’s Exchange will remember the life and service of Bill and Betty Chandler.

This September we are launching a new initiative to reach out into our community. We are partnering with the Marpole-Oakridge Community Centre to run a weekly drop-in program called Little Years. The program is for children between birth and five years and their caregivers. It is open to caregivers, with the desire to have anyone caring for small children to attend: moms, dads, legal guardians, foster parents, grandparents, or nannies. Each week there will be activities for children, as well as coffee and baked goods for adults. Little Years has been intentionally designed as a social space for the people of St. John’s to engage in a deeper relationship with one another and to purposefully connect with families in our community. If you are interested in partnering with us, we have a few ways for you to participate! • We need volunteers to bake goods each week • We need volunteers to act as a St. John’s host each week • If you are a parent or caregiver of a child five or under, we want you to come We would also ask for your prayers in the following areas: • For a good relationship and open communication between St. John’s and the Marpole-Oakridge Community Center • For a core group that will consistently attend and help create a welcoming environment for those who are not part of the St. John’s family • That families from the community would feel loved and cared for through this group and come to the knowledge of Jesus Christ Little Years will be starting Monday, September 17.
