WH AT ’S UP AT S T. JOHN’S DIVORCECARE | STARTING IN SEPTEMBER CHANGE OF START DATE: DivorceCare will begin on September 27 We are starting a new DivorceCare group this fall. It will run on Thursday nights between 7:00 and 9:00 pm. The first session will be on September 27 and all sessions will happen at St. John’s Vancouver, 5350 Baillie Street. DivorceCare helps people recover from the pain of separation and divorce and is a support group that meets weekly for 13 weeks. If this would be helpful for you, please consider joining us. If this would be helpful for someone you know, please let them know they are welcome. JOIN OUR SUNDAY SCHOOL TEAM Join our Sunday School team for the new year! We’re welcoming new volunteers at the 9:00 am, 11:00 am, and 6:00 pm services. PARISH RETREAT SEPTEMBER 21-23 Our retreat speaker this year is Chris Ley. He will be speaking from 2 Peter on the topic of “Following Jesus in a World that doesn’t.” We are looking forward to a great weekend learning from scripture and deepening friendships with one another. If you haven’t yet registered and plan to come it is helpful for our planning if you can register sooner rather than later. Registration can be done through the website.
IN OUR COMMUNITY LITTLE YEARS: CHAT + PLAY
ESL DISCUSSION GROUP
A new group is starting Monday, September 17 at the Marpole-Oakridge Community Centre. Little Years is a weekly program for children between birth and five years and their caregivers led by our Early Childhood Coordinator Heather LaRoy.
We have a friendship group for ESL Learners that provides a great opportunity to practice speaking English while learning about Canadian culture and Christianity.
If you are interested in partnering with us, we have a few ways for you to participate:
• We need volunteers to bake goods each week • We need volunteers to act as a St. John’s host each week • If you are a parent or caregiver of a child five or under, we want you to come
Little Years will be starting Monday, September 17. We will meet weekly from 10:45 am to 12:15 pm at the Marpole-Oakridge Community Centre, 990 West 59th Ave, Vancouver. If you have questions or would like to volunteer, please contact Heather, heather@sjvan.org.
We invite you to bring your friends and neighbours to our first meeting on Friday, September 21 at 10:30 am. We will meet every second Friday. CONDOLENCE On August 30, Rhoda Morrison died and finished her course with joy. Rhoda’s husband would like to invite the St John’s family and friends of the Morrison’s to attend the memorial service on September 6, 2pm at Columbia-Bowell Chapel: 219 6th Street, New Westminster. Please remember George and Rhoda’s family in your prayers.

Celebration for David & Dan Celebrate David Short’s 25th and Dan Gifford’s 20th anniversaries We hope you will plan to stay immediately after a shortened 10:00 am service Sunday, September 9 for fun, reflections, and celebration as we mark David Short’s 25 years as our Rector and Dan Gifford’s 20 years. Light refreshments will follow. If you have not already done so, you can personalize your thanks with a letter to David and to Dan. Write a card or letter, including photos if you wish, and send it to the church office, 2325 Burrard Street, Vancouver, V6J 3J2 to arrive by Friday, September 7. Mark each envelope with Anniversary Celebration and indicate whether your mail is intended for David or Dan. Join in the celebration, write them your thanks.
