What ’s up at St. John’s CATECHISM // THE WAY OF LIFE
LEARNERS’ EXCHANGE
What is the “Good Life”? Ask anyone this question and they will have an opinion. This week in Catechism we ask “What is the Way of Life”? Our discussion will take us to the crucial overarching question of all Scripture, where do we find LIFE, in the fullest sense of that word?
Every Sunday in the Café Room at 9:00 am, Learners’ Exchange offers stimulating speakers and engaging discussions.
Join us downstairs in the Fellowship Hall during the 11:00 am service as we seek answers to this vital question.
February 10 // David Falk The Egyptian Context of the Ten Commandments
GRIEF: GOD’S HELP IN TIMES OF LOSS
SENIORS TEA // FEB 19
Grief – What can we say? Grief is complex and complicated, but a time where we can experience God’s comfort. Sometimes it is difficult to recognize the comfort of the gospel, and other times you find Jesus’ compassion similar to a renewal of your conversion. At St. John’s we want to walk alongside you in your grief along with the Psalmists.
Join us Tuesday, February 12 at 1:30 pm in the church chapel for tea and coffee. Our speaker will be Rev. Jeremy Graham who will share his “love story” in honour of Valentines Day. RSVP to Margaret Wilson, margaret@sjvan.org or 778-838-7400.
Beginning February 14 we will begin a six-session grief group/bible study meeting bi-weekly. Please contact james@sjvan.org for more information. Registration is on the website (sjvan.org/events). How many times have you pulled out your phone in the last week and wondered if it was making you more or less human? Have you asked yourself the same question about your coffee maker? These are technological advances that help us function on a daily basis, but we don’t always question technology’s impact on our humanity. For three weeks we would like to come together and discuss technology with the help of Craig Gay. He recently published a book on this topic – Modern Technology and the Human Future: A Christian Appraisal and the back cover asks: “From the plow to the printing press, technology has always shaped human life and informed our understanding of what it means to be human. And advances in modern technology, from computers to smartphones, have yielded tremendous benefits. But do these developments actually encourage human flourishing?” Join us for Tech Not Neutral, where Craig will address the following topics and lead us into discussion. Session 1 Our typically modern (largely mechanical) way of looking at things and why this is a problem Session 2 A biblical theology of creation and what this means for thinking about technology Session 3 A biblical theology of human vocation within created order and what this means for thinking and using our technologies Tech Not Neutral will happen at St. John’s Vancouver, 5350 Baillie Street in the Fellowship Hall (downstairs) from 7:30-9:00 pm. They will run for three consecutive weeks starting on February 26.
