KEEPING COMPANY WITH GOD POTLUCK DINNER // MAY 27 All are welcome to enjoy a delicious meal and hear from Margaret Wilson. She has lived and worked in many parts of the world and will share how, over many years, she has kept “Learning to Trust in the Goodness of God.” Some of us had the privilege to hear Margaret speak at a St. John’s women’s brunch several years ago. But she has much more to share, and men can come hear from her this time! Feel free to invite friends who don’t usually come to St. John’s or Keeping Company with God. If you are able, please email Manya the dish you plan to bring, megerton@telus.net. Last minute guests are also welcome. Join us at 6:30 pm. SOUP SUNDAY // JUNE 2 We have a special treat for you for our next Soup Sunday: Joel’s Bread! Joel is a member of St. John’s who has been doing some serious bread making this past year. We will get to taste his homemade bread, eat soup, and hang out. Invite a friend, play some games, and chat with some great people. Soup and bread will be ready downstairs after the Evening Service. We will start winding down around 8:30 pm, but feel free to leave when you’re ready. If you are super keen on playing a game, bring one along!

June 2 // James Wagner The Christian and Anxiety PARKING We have received complaints from our neighbours who are unable to get out of their garages on Sunday as people are parking in the alley. Please do not park in the alley beside the church, but find spots on the street. Cars left in the alley may be towed. QUARTERLY PRAYER MEETING Join us on Monday, June 3 for our prayer meeting. We will hear from a guest speaker and will continue to think about reaching out to people with the gospel. We will start at 7:30 pm.

This is our last Soup Sunday before summer-break. But don’t fret, we’ll resume in September! If you would like to volunteer for the fall on the Soup-Making Team, Set-up Team, or Take-down Team, email Katy at katy@sjvan.org.

ASCENSION DAY SERVICE // THURSDAY, MAY 30 The Bible tells us that Christ’s ascension took place forty days after his resurrection, and while our celebration of Easter is an important and joyful time, it is important for us to remember also our Lord’s ascension to his throne in heaven. Jesus’ ascension assures us that he rules over all creation with the Father and by the Holy Spirit. Were it not for his ascendancy, chaos would ensue throughout the earth. Yet, through his shepherding in heaven, world order is in his hands. Each person who believes in Jesus is in the hands of our Good Shepherd who prays for us as He rules. As Jim Packer writes in A Concise Theology, In sovereignty he now lavishes upon us the benefits of his suffering won for us. He pleads for us by his presence on His Father’s throne. Our Lord’s life in heaven is his prayer. From his throne he sends the Holy Spirit constantly to enrich his people and equip them for service. Join us on Thursday, May 30 at 7:30 pm as we celebrate the gracious and powerful rule of Jesus in a special Ascension Day Service.
