COVID-19 CORONAVIRUS & SUNDAY GATHERINGS In January 2020, Chinese authorities confirmed the presence of a new type of coronavirus known as COVID-19. The virus affects the lungs and breathing and looks a bit like the influenza or flu virus. It especially impacts the young, elderly and people already sick for another reason. It can be spread by touch if a person has used their hands to cover their mouth or nose when they cough. At this stage there is no vaccination. The BC Centre for Disease Control tells us this week that: “The risk of spread of this virus in B.C. communities remains low at this time. In B.C., Canada and many other countries, we continue to be in active containment mode to detect cases and respond to prevent the virus from spreading in the community” At St. John’s we want to help in this prevention and so we will temporarily not include a greeting time that often involves shaking of hands in our services. We encourage you each Sunday to greet visitors and one another warmly but to do this in ways other than a handshake. We will continue to offer the common cup at communion at this time but will monitor the situation. Over the years, the U.S. national Center for Disease Control and Prevention has several times answered inquiries regarding the risk of disease transmission from a common cup. As the American Journal of Infection Control has explained
(October 1998), within the CDC (U.S. Centers for Disease Control) there is a consensus that a “theoretic” risk might exist, but that “the risk is so small that it is undetectable.” And further, “no documented transmission of any infectious disease has ever been traced” to this practice. Nevertheless, all those serving communion will be very careful to sanitize their hands just before communion and to use sanitary procedures. You are also welcome to partake in communion with the small cups available at the front, or to simply receive a prayer of blessing by crossing your hands in front of your chest. It is important at this time to be aware of the situation as it develops, but not to become overly alarmed or panicked. Throughout history the church has been an agent of calm, reassurance, and compassion during times of uncertainty, and we believe that continuing to meet together for gathered worship of our Lord Jesus each Sunday is integral to healthy living. You can keep aware of this situation in BC by checking this website: http:// www.bccdc.ca/health-info/diseases-conditions/ coronavirus- (novel) Please pray for the eradication of this virus and pray for our brothers and sisters in Christ who are facing this virus right now in China, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Iran, Italy, and so many other places. As we pray remember that God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and love and sound judgment (2 Tim 1:7).
