Hymns 1. My hope is built on nothing less
3. His oath, His covenant, His blood
than Jesus’ blood and righteousness;
support me in the whelming flood;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
when all around my soul gives way,
but wholly lean on Jesus’ name.
He then is all my hope and stay.
Refrain:
(refrain)
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand All other ground is sinking sand, All other ground is sinking sand.
4
2. When darkness veils His lovely face,
4. When He shall come with trumpet sound,
I rest on His unchanging grace;
O may I then in Him be found,
in every high and stormy gale
dressed in His righteousness alone,
my anchor holds within the veil.
faultless to stand before the throne.
(refrain)
(refrain)
1. A mighty fortress is our God,
3. That word above all earthly powers,
a bulwark never failing;
no thanks to them, abideth;
our helper He amid the flood
The Spirit and the gifts are ours
of mortal ills prevailing.
through Him who with us sideth.
For still our ancient foe
Let goods and kindred go,
doth seek to work us woe-
this mortal life also—
his craft and power are great,
the body they may kill;
and armed with cruel hate,
God’s truth abideth still:
on earth is not his equal.
His kingdom is forever.
2. Did we in our own strength confide,
4. And though this world, with devils filled,
our striving would be losing,
should threaten to undo us,
were not the right man on our side,
we will not fear, for God hath willed
the man of God’s own choosing.
His truth to triumph through us.
Dost ask who that may be?
The prince of darkness grim,
Christ Jesus, it is He—
We tremble not for him—
Lord Sabaoth His name,
his rage we can endure,
from age to age the same,
for lo, his doom is sure:
and He must win the battle.
one little word shall fell him.

This year they submitted an application to the federal government for sponsorship of an Afghan family living in New Delhii; 60 SJV members, headed by Jonathan Bayliss have joined the Refugee Welcome team who walk alongside new refugees in Vancouver providing guidance and support. They have provided financial support to two refugee organizations: Kinbrace and Journey Home. Some of the ways we reached out to these newcomers in 2016 include a Lunar New Year Party, Christianity Explored courses, ESL courses, and a book club. Jeremy Graham, Family Ministries – Jeremy described our approach to family ministries as a horizontal ministry that goes across the church into all areas. In 2016 we established several intentional intergenerational events including: Out and About, the Parish Retreat, Intergenerational Bible studies, all designed to bring people of all ages together. Nicole Inboden, Student Ministries – Nicole spoke about the importance of discipleship of young people and how St. John’s is working in this area. An important focus of the ministry is making faith the foundation of young people’s lives and serving the Lord with their whole life. She also described the intentional focus on evangelism that Senior Youth took part in 2016 which included outreach events in the form of house parties, and a mission trip to Fresno, California.

Building Update – Jeff Spruston
In 2016: the Property Committee pursued three specific options (two existing churches, and land owned by a church); we also pursued a leasing option on the Heather Lands. Two congregational meetings were held in 2016 to discuss our building search, and an informational booklet on the building search was published. Results from the 2016 Building Survey: 230 respondents, 93% believed St. John’s plays an important role regionally & nationally, 86% felt we would benefit from a permanent home. $3.7 million was informally committed to a new building project by respondents Plans for 2017 – we will continue to pursue eight live options, and will continue to look for leasing options for bringing our office and mid-week ministries together. 9.

2018 Gift
A long-time parishioner of St. John’s, in an act of great generosity and faithfulness, has given our church an amazing gift, bequeathing approximately $3,000,000 to St. John’s. The will was specific that ninety percent of the gift be used for “operations”, and ten percent go to missions. In late 2017, the St. John’s Trustees formed a sub-committee to consider how this gift might be used so that it aligned with both the donor’s wishes and the vision and priorities of St. John’s. Their recommendation was that it be used over a ten-year period to make a difference along the lines of our vision and priorities, equipping us and others in new ways so that the gospel would take deep roots and spread far beyond our parish. This money will be used over and above the regular donations St. John’s receives for the annual budget. Ninety percent will be designated to church operations and associated outreach programs to include near term, medium term, and long term (ten year) projects. This includes holding ten percent in an operating reserve to eliminate the need for an outside line of credit. The remainder, which represents ten percent of the total gift, will be designated to Missions. This generous gift is a great encouragement and a reminder that many of us can make a difference to the work of evangelism through bequests and special gifts. We are the stewards of this gift. We thank God for this donor and for the opportunity we at St. John’s Vancouver have to use this money wisely to equip, support and send out believers so that the word of the Lord will spread far and wide and others may come to know God. To God be the glory!
10
How will the bequest funds be used in 2018? We are allocating $270,000 of the bequest to be used in 2018. Ninety percent will used in operations, and ten percent will go towards missions. Operations Our vision remains the same: St. John’s is a community of contrast, gripped by the gospel of God’s grace, and reaching out to others with the gospel of Christ. However, over the last year, our priorities have become clearer. Our staff and lay leadership teams will be developing ministry plans this year according to our priorities. The three priorities are: 1. Gospel Proclamation: making evangelism a priority at St. John’s. 2. Gospel Formation: growing disciples towards maturity in Christ. 3. Gospel Application: equipping people to live as effective Christians in their culture. The bequest presents an amazing opportunity to develop and fund plans around these pillars so that the gospel moves forward in our lives and in our city. In 2018, with the oversight of the Trustees, staff will be developing ministry programs and plans with their lay leadership teams to explore concrete ways that the bequest will be used to these ends. Missions With input from the Trustees, the Missions Committee will explore how the bequest can best be used to advance the gospel outside of St. John’s.

Prayer Points Paul prays in his letter to the Colossians: And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy; giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Colossians 1:9-14 Let us echo Paul’s prayers as we pray for our church, and for one and other this year. Continue to pray for God’s help as we share the incredible story of how he delivers us from the domain of darkness to the kingdom of his beloved son. The space below is for you to write prayer points arising out of the meeting.
