Lady Washington to visit dock
A reproduction of a historic ship is sailing into Anacortes just in time for the Waterfront Festival.
The Lady Washington, from the Grays Harbor Historic Seaport, was built in 1989 but is a full-scale version of the original Lady Washington.
The pre-Revolutionary War original took a trading voyage around Cape Horn and in 1788 was the first American vessel to dock on the West Coast of North America, according to the historical sea-
port's website.
The boat traveled all over the world in its time.
At the Waterfront Festival, people will have the chance to board the ship and take a look around. There are also opportunities to purchase tickets to go on sails.
The ship will be in town from June 1-4. Dockside tours are at 1-3 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Club offers kids chance to build boats
There is a longtime annual tradition for Anacortes children of building doll-sized boats at the Anacortes Waterfront Festival and then fl oating them in a pool to check their seaworthiness.
The Fidalgo Island Rotary Club starts early, working with area businesses to cut hulls out for more than 1,000 small wooden boats.
Last year, the club handed out 1,300 hulls and actually had 400 left over. Leftovers are uncommon, but wind and rain greatly reduced crowds on the second day of last year’s festival.
Each youngster fi rst picks up a hull.
Then they gather in a building area, often with parents in tow, to nail fi xtures and decorations to their boats, which include the mast, a sail, corks and other decorations.
Once built, they can test their newly created vessels in the nearby pool.
The booth is always one of the biggest draws of the festival.
Donations toward next year’s supplies are happily accepted.

Visitors to the Fidalgo Island Rotary Club booth have the chance to pick out decorations for their wooden boat, put them together and then launch them nearby.
Teams build boats they hope float
The annual Quick and Dirty Boatbuilding Demonstration is one of the biggest draws of the Waterfront Festival, especially for adults.
The little kids come to build miniature boats. The grownups come to watch other adults build much bigger boats by hand and then try to race
them.
Inevitably, not all prove to be seaworthy.
It’s not only good fun, but also a way to raise money for local charities.
The contest challenges teams to build the best boat they can using only six hours and a limited number of supplies.
Then, the teams launch in the marina and see which vessel can make it to the end of the dock and back ... without capsizing, sinking or falling apart.
Some sail cleanly across the fi nish line; others have been known to make it a few feet.
Teams will build the boats from
9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and then decorate them from 3-5 p.m. A parade of the boats from the stage down to the water will start at 5 p.m., followed closely by the demonstration on the water.
Awards include Best Design, Best Use of Mystery Material and Wettest Feet.
Visitors can donate to different teams to earn them a People’s Choice Award.
Yes, it’s an award where the votes
are money. The winning team will donate its earnings to a nonprofi t of its choice.
The others will donate half of the money to their chosen nonprofi t and half to the Waterfront Alliance.

Yacht club offers free boat rides
There may be 17,000 residents on Fidalgo Island, but a lot of them never get a chance to ride a boat.
The odds improve each year during Anacortes Waterfront Festival. Anacortes
Yacht Club members host free rides on their boats during both days of the festival, with options for both power and
sailboats.
But the spots fill up fast.
Visitors should look for the yacht club near the entrance to the marina to sign up for a time slot.
Boat riders should wear closed-toe shoes and must sign a waiver before heading out. There are age limits.
Rides are typically about 45 minutes.
