Celebrating the Leadership Skagit Class of 2017!
I
t is truly rewarding to celebrate the Leadership Skagit Class of 2017. We are proud of your accomplishments and commitment to serving our community. Your dedication and energy are evidence that community leadership is alive and thriving in Skagit County! Thank you to Leadership Skagit’s founding partners, the Economic Development Alliance of Skagit County, Skagit Valley College and Washington State University Extension, for their vision to build a strong foundation of leaders. In addition, we are grateful to the individuals and businesses who give generously of their time, funding and in-kind donations and to the forward-thinking companies and organizations that support their employees’ participation. With their investment, the program’s success continues to grow. Over 400 Leadership Skagit graduates now make a difference throughout our communities. Through their service, they provide stewardship to agencies like the United Way, the YMCA, Community Action of Skagit County and many more. Graduates continue to advance their professional careers, pursue elective office and increase their service on boards, commissions and task forces. As a result, Leadership Skagit, a program of the Economic Alliance of Skagit County Foundation, is an ongoing, powerful resource for Skagit County and its communities. Members of the 14th graduating class, your role in this exciting work is just beginning. We look forward to your future achievements as community leaders.

PROJECT: The Landing
“S
henanigans in Action” formed with a trust in teamwork bound together by a sense of responsibility in service to our community. Our actions were guided by the values of caring, learning and flexibility. We agreed that our project must have an impact on the youth in our community and address mental health conditions. The Landing offers children a place to meet with other youth who are grieving as they are so they can learn healthy coping mechanisms. We worked there to remove decaying structures and added a fire pit, tetherball, ga-ga ball, labyrinth and other improvements to the outdoor environment. leadershipskagit.org

orking with Skagit County Parks and Recreation, and Skagit Land Trust, the goal of our project was to provide better awareness of the history, wildlife, and natural resources at Barney Lake along the Centennial Trail by building a sustainable Observation Platform with signage. Funding for materials needed was provided by Skagit County Parks and Recreation; design was SS6’s, and construction by the Team took two full days plus three evenings. Signs provide information about surrounding terrain, history, and wildlife living in this beautiful ecological site within our community..

PROJECT: “Community Arts
for
Healing Hearts”
A
n enhanced art program has taken shape at Secret Harbor in Burlington. The foster care agency now has more volunteer teachers, new supplies, and a remodeled art room with storage and work desks. Clients of the agency are partnered with local artists to explore music and visual arts, tapping into the healing rhythms of self-expression. Support from the community was strong and a fund for future supplies established. Our team identified roadblocks to the existing program, designed solutions, marshaled support, organized resources, and equipped staff to continue well into the future. Don’t be surprised when the next famous artist hails from Burlington!” 16

OOOOOAAAALLLL! Our team discovered a large community soccer league made up of 600+ youth that has been a part of our community for 10 years. They’ve managed to run the league with little to no help…Until our team stepped in! Our main goals were to help with supplying equipment for up to 20 teams, computerize administration work, and create awareness of the league. Our team succeeded, thanks to our wonderful Skagit County community! We were driven by the belief that team sports, such as soccer, provide Skagit County Youth with incredible team and leadership skills that will continue on into our community as they grow. These talented kids are our future!
