Thai Restaurant Prides Itself on Delivering Quality, Flavorful, and Healthy Cuisine to the Community

Congratulations to Naung Mai Thai Kitchen on being nominated for Best Asian Food and Catering!

Owned by Issaree Clevenger and Michael Clevenger, Naung Mai Thai Kitchen specializes in authentic Thai cuisine, featuring popular dishes such as Pad Thai, Pad See Ew, and fresh summer rolls.

The business traces its origins back to Issaree’s tenure in the U.S. Navy when she received the order to station at NAS Whidbey

Island. Driven by her passion to care for her parents, she envisioned starting a Thai restaurant to support her parents’ relocation to the United States. Building on the success of Ma and Pa’s successful 20-year stint in the restaurant industry in Thailand, the trio established a thriving small-business in Anacortes in June, 1999, driven by their collective expertise and appreciation for their Thai heritage.

To ensure an authentic taste, Ma and Pa travel to Thailand twice a year

to import high-quality curry pastes directly from the source. “We strongly emphasize using the finest and healthiest ingredients in crafting our dishes. Our goal is to treat every customer as

if they were part of our own kitchen, so our nickname is “Thai Kitchen.” Our commitment to excellent customer service, top-notch ingredients, and innovative employee technology

reflects our dedication to providing an exceptional experience for both our patrons and our team,” shared Issaree. “Additionally, we are actively working toward becoming more sustainable, emphasizing our commitment to environmental responsibility.”

Naung Mai Thai Kitchen is open every day, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

De Asian Brings Passion for Asian Cuisine to Anacortes

Congratulations to De Asian Restaurant on being nominated for Best Asian Food and Best New Business!

De Asian Restaurant specializes in Asian cuisine, offering a wide variety of dishes, including sushi (nigiri, sashimi, and sushi rolls), Japanese cuisine (ramen, Japanese curry, Yakisoba, and Teriyaki), and Thai food (Pad Thai, Thai curries). Additionally, they serve fusion Asian options like Wonton soup and Tom Yum Ramen.

Sittichok Taweeplengsangsuk and Jantarat Aranyabhumi

opened De Asian in January, 2023, with their shared love for Japanese cuisine and first-hand knowledge of the restaurant business to guide them. Their numerous travels to Japan have deepened their appreciation for Japanese food and culture, leaving them with a persistent sense of nostalgia after each visit. This nostalgia and passion for Japanese cuisine inspired them to establish De Asian.

De Asian boasts the culinary expertise of Chef Art, who brings over 20 years of experience in Japanese cuisine to the table. The team’s creative approach to the menu aims to provide the Anacortes community with a fun and unique dining experience, blending the best of Japanese and Asian flavors

under one roof. “It is the perfect spot for date nights, birthday celebrations, and family dinners,” said Jantarat.

Sugar Mama Cafe: Speak friend and enter

Three years ago this summer, Natalie and Wendy Clark decided it was time to leave Texas, where Natalie had operated a tech company for nearly 20 years. They eventually decided to settle in Anacortes along with their son. They weren’t sure about what they wanted to do as a next act (except that it wouldn’t involve a keyboard), but Natalie had once dreamed of opening a coffee shop back when grunge and the coffee culture of the PNW found its way to Dallas.

“My wife and I are lifelong cooks who travel on our stomachs,” says Natalie, “so we figured we would go with what we know.” Their goal for a culinary venue in a town with no lack of great culinary venues was as straightforward as their love of food. “I love making party food, so we came at it thinking, ‘If we were throwing a party, what would we want to eat?’”

Natalie and Wendy set out to create a space that was welcoming, casual, and included the opportunity for outdoor dining during the fantastic summer months in Anacortes. “When this building went up for sale with its huge yard in the downtown corridor, we knew this was the place,” says Natalie. “We bought the building in late 2022 and fully renovated the dining space.” They also created a killer

patio — and the nucleus of a true neighborhood hang out. “We built a place that we wanted to come to,” Natalie says proudly.

Sugar Mama Cafe’s website describes its bill of fare as “elevated home cooking.” Both Natalie and Wendy cook and bake, and each has her own culinary flair. Natalie’s background tends toward the “heartier, starchier dishes,” and Wendy (who Natalie describes as “the better cook”) smokes her own meats. Both have delved deeply into the TexMex traditions of their home state.

Sugar Mama Cafe hung its rainbow welcome banner in June 2023, offering sandwich options and sharable plates of scratch made cooking, along with dessert and PNW wine pairings. The menu has since expanded into brunch and lunch entrees that include the scrambled egg grilled cheese sandwich with hot tomato jam (“A great acid and sweet combo with the blended cheeses,” says Natalie) and the puff pastry mini quiche, which comes topped with a savory fresh tomato whipped cream.

They key ingredient that

permeates the Sugar Mama Cafe menu and premises isn’t hard to discern. “Food is my love language,” says Natalie, “so we want to spread love with food that we find delicious and that enhances the time spent with loved ones. What makes my day, no matter how long I’ve been in front of the grill, is when I hear people laughing and enjoying themselves. That’s what we’re doing this for.”

To view Sugar Mama Cafe’s menu, go to www. sugarmamacafe.com. You can listen to an interview with Natalie Clark on the “Tales

of the Magic Skagit” podcast channel, available through Spotify, Apple, Google, and other podcast channels.

Sugar Mama Cafe is open Wednesday & Thursday, 11am-8pm; Friday 11am9pm; Saturday 10am-9pm; Sunday 10am-6pm. The cafe is closed Monday and Tuesday.

Be healthy: be sure to eat and drink your Cosmic Veggies

In 2015, Elizabeth Weaver began serving nutritional juices and smoothies to Anacortes Farmers Market customers under the name “Drink Your Veggies.” Such was its popularity that a storefront location on Commercial Ave. followed just four years later.

Today, operating as Cosmic Veggies, Weaver’s business has expanded its nutritional offerings to include primarily organic, vegan and gluten-free breakfasts, lunches and dinners with a raw juice bar, a huge selection of whole-food smoothies, cleanse packages, cooking classes, nutritional

consultation, and a cooler with dozens of grab-and-go salads, beverages, desserts and meals.

“We want to connect our guests to the resources they need to live their best life,” says Weaver. “Sometimes that means providing a quick, healthy meal to fuel their day.

Other times it’s working with them over several months or years to heal major health issues. We love inspiring others to change their lives with small, consistent changes.”

Cosmic Veggies’ staff include an in-house nutritionist with 25 years of experience in menu

development and custom meal plans. It’s best-selling item is its 5-Day Detox Meal package, and almost all of its products are locally sourced. Along with healthy and delicious food, Cosmic

Veggies plans to offer more nutrition classes this spring that will include resources for people who want to add more plants into their diet. In addition to its Anacortes location, the company

recently franchised a Cosmic Veggies location in Oak Harbor.

Cosmic Veggies is open Monday-Friday, 9-5pm and Sunday, 10-3pm. Sign up to receive exclusive discounts, promotions, coupons, recipes and event info at cosmicveggies.com.

The Wishing Rock is where the magic happens

In 2014, Lori Maul opened her first shop in Anacortes, Classic Style and Company. Her shop evolved into what is now Fidalgo Artisan Yarn & Clothing. Her latest endeavor, The Wishing Rock, was born of a love of outdoor, patio, and garden spaces. In June last year, she opened her new business just across Commercial Avenue from her first shop. She also had the good fortune of finding and hiring Jan and Riley, and talking husband Dan into becoming one of The Wishing Rock’s staff.

True to its inspiration, The Wishing Rock specializes in gifts and items for the home and garden. “It’s a store for garden lovers, plant lovers and much more,” Lori says. “Our top priorities are bringing another beautiful shop to downtown Anacortes and filling the need for quality gifts, plants and decor. And then there is the magic and fun of it all!”

Lori confesses that she, her husband, and their staff are probably having as much fun as their customers. Along with building terrariums and running errands, Dan regularly dispenses his shop’s namesakes. “Wishing rocks are the rocks we find with an unbroken circle around them,” Lori explains. “These

are special rocks, shrouded in legend and folklore, and bring good fortune and wishes to those who find them.”

With its first anniversary

coming up in June, Lori and Dan are especially grateful to customers and friends, and to the community that has embraced them. “We look forward to the shop maturing

and the future opportunities as we build on our first year.”

The Wishing Rock is open Sunday-Monday, 11-3pm; Tuesday-Saturday 10-4:30pm. Experience the magic online at www.wishing-rock.com

Jeweler continues three generations of tradition in Anacortes

Burton Jewelers has had a wonderful tradition of fine jewelry and gifts in Anacortes for over 94 years.

They specialize in custom jewelry design, drawing from their extensive collection of diamonds and colored gems. They feature expert jewelry repair and restoration with their goldsmith in-house or through a vast network of high-quality workshops. In addition, the store offers inhouse jewelry appraisals for insurance purposes, estate, and fair market value. The store features fine diamonds, white and fancy natural colors, and an extensive

selection of fascinating colored gemstones. They have an immense selection of engagement rings, birthstone jewelry, earrings, and pendants. Additionally, they have a vast selection of fine tableware, barware, and art glass. Inside the store is the Burton fine art gallery, with rotating shows of local artists.

The store was founded on March 1, 1930, by Phil D. Burton and carried forward by his son Doug Burton and daughter-in-law Laura (Salmon) Burton. Today

the legacy continues even stronger with 3rd generation Philip G. Burton and his wife, Holly (Roskelley) Burton. Philip Burton took gemological training in

the late 80s, gem cutting in Germany in 1991, and achieved his title of Registered Jeweler of the American Gem Society in 2003. Only 5% of finer independent jewelers are members of the AGS, and Philip takes continuing education and testing annually to retain the title. In addition, AGS members sign a code of ethics pledge yearly to uphold honesty and transparency in the industry for consumer protection.

Natural Way Chiropractic

Since opening its first clinic in Bellingham, WA in 1995, Natural Way Chiropractic has introduced its “Natural Way Healing System” across eight clinic locations in Western Washington, and each month thousands of patients rely on its services to get back to and maintain an active lifestyle. In 2014 Natural Way Chiropractic opened Its Anacortes office which since 2022 has been under the direction of Dr. Lynn Sellyei. “Your brain controls absolutely everything that happens within your body, and that communication takes place through the spinal cord

and the nerves that come out of it,” says Dr. Sellyei. “If there is any pressure or interference with that communication, your body can’t function. Chiropractic care just releases any interference within that system so the body and brain can function at 100 percent potential.”

Natural Way Chiropractic offers a variety of chiropractic methods tailored to the specific needs of its patients, but all approaches are based on rigorous science. “We start on day one of a patient’s visit with neural scans, x-rays, orthopedic and neurologic testing for a proper diagnosis on which to base our

treatment, “ Dr. Sellyei notes.

“We back everything we say with science.”

Over the years that she has practiced chiropractic medicine, Dr. Sellyei has observed a shift in how her profession has been perceived.

“Although there are some

people who persist in thinking of chiropractic as being only about pain management, it’s really about helping the body function the way it’s supposed to. We want all of our patients to feel amazing and perform the best they can in everything that they do.”

Natural Way Chiropractic is proud to be an employee owned business, and one that takes an active part in the life of its community — a point that Dr. Sellyei makes in citing the reasons for her clinic’s success. “I love living and volunteering in this community.”

Natural Way Chiropractic of Anacortes is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 8-12pm and 2-6pm; Tuesday 2-6pm; Thursday 8-12pm.

WE UNDERSTAND YOUR PAIN

Thank you to everyone who voted for us.

KJB Esthetics wants you to love the skin you’re in

Kenzie Blouin’s professional journey as an esthetician began in 2022 at Evergreen Beauty College in Mount Vernon — but her personal journey with skin health began many years before with her struggle to heal her own skin.

“At a young age I started going to my own esthetician,” Kenzie recalls. “The impact she had on my life was immense. She helped me to feel beautiful and confident in my own skin. It was at this moment that I knew I wanted to be able to do the same for others — to help people love the skin they’re in.”

After graduating from Evergreen in 2023 (at the age of 19, no less) she opened her own salon, appropriately named KJB Esthetics. The salon offers a wide variety of skin care services, including individually tailored facials, chemical peels, dermaplaning, microdermabrasion, nanofusion (an alternative to microneedling), eyelash extensions (classic, hybrid and volume), lash lift and tint, eyebrow lamination, brow tinting, and body waxing.

“I send each client home with post service instructions and post-procedure kits for

peels,” says Kenzie. “I also offer to send each client home with skincare samples to get them started on the right regimen.”

As a licensed esthetician, Kenzie offers free consultations to help clients

identify their skincare needs. The salon also offers loyalty cards, a referral program and gift certificates, with a clientele that extends throughout Skagit and Island counties.

“It’s a lot of hard work to

be a new business owner,” says Kenzie, “but at the end of the day the smile I bring to my clients’ faces is all worth it. I love what I do!” KJB Esthetics is open Monday - Thursday 8:00am - 5:00pm; Friday 8:00am4:30pm; Saturday - Sunday 8:00am - 11:00am — Custom scheduling is available by contacting Kenzie Blouin (360) 941-0932

Salish General Contracting is out of the gate and on the move

Salish General Contracting LLC took on its first project in April 2023; by the end of that year the residential and commercial construction contractor had completed 16 projects in total, ranging from bathroom and kitchen remodels to commercial space renovations. The company has since added new home construction to its list of upcoming projects.

Jared Douglas, the founder and owner of Salish General Contracting, is a man in a hurry…but he isn’t one to cut corners. He graduated from Anacortes High School before going to Oregon State

to get a degree in Mechanical Engineering. After working for large general contractor in Seattle and Denver here turned home to found

Salish General Contracting, teaming up with Scott Irving, who previously owned Irving Construction Corp., a well established company that served Anacortes for more than three decades.

Salish General Contracting places a premium on client involvement and elective communication throughout the construction process from planning to turning over the keys. “Transparency is also something we

pride ourselves on,”says Douglas.“We aren’t afraid to have difficult conversations when they are needed. Our clients deserve to know the specifics of their project and it is our job to keep them apprised.”

Douglas is rightfully

proud of his company’s success in the year since its founding, but he is also proud of its being a Native American owned business.

“Being a member of the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community, I am part of the original Coast Salish People,”

Douglas says. “Which is why I thought it would be fitting to incorporate that identity into the name of my company. We are just getting started but we’ve been fortunate to work with some amazing people in our community, including the Swinomish Tribe, and we look forward to many more years of serving Anacortes and the surrounding area.”

Salish General Contracting LLC’s hour of operation are Monday through Friday from 8-5pm.

Anacortes Arts Festival: celebrating a town through art

In 1962, a small group of Anacortes business owners and local artists decided to honor their hometown by hosting an art show. What started as displays of art in the back of trucks and hanging from clothesline along a few blocks of Commercial Avenue has since grown into a ten-block festival filled with arts, crafts, and activities for admiring throngs enjoying a summer day in beautiful Anacortes.

The Anacortes Arts Festival (AAF) is a non-profit organization that supports artists, art education and creative programs on Fidalgo Island, and has the distinction

of producing the largest threeday arts festival in the Pacific Northwest. This year’s Annual Anacortes Arts Festival (its 63rd) takes place August 2 – 4 and features more than 230 artist booths, a fine art show, food, beer and wine gardens, entertainment, youth activities, and much more.

AAF is a year-round organization, which is no surprise considering that it takes months to plan and produce the summer festival.

“We also have a number of other programs that many people don’t know about,” says AAF executive director Meredith Mcllmoyle.

“We typically plan several

springtime events to coincide with the Skagit Tulip Festival. This year, we will host the second annual Nautical Treasure Hunt and a Wine Tasting event in April.”

In collaboration with a number of arts partners, AAF opened the Art Center at Buxton’s in 2023. The historic

building at 1904 Commercial Avenue has become a hub of creative activity with concerts, art shows, music lessons, theatre rehearsals, fundraising events, art lessons and much more. Late last year the Anacortes Arts Festival also led the way in having Anacortes designated as a Creative

District by the Washington State Arts Commission.

“Through these efforts, our community will be able to grow our events and creative businesses for both residents and tourists alike,” Mcllmoyle says. “Watch for new murals downtown and several creative collaborations later this year.”

Anacortes Market Celebrates 35-Year Anniversary

Congratulations to Anacortes Farmers Market on being nominated for Best Event!

The Anacortes Farmers Market was founded in 1989 and is currently celebrating its 35th anniversary! The Market has been located in the Depot Plaza since its inception, launching with just four vendors. Today, the Market has grown to over 100 rotating vendors, and currently attracts up to 4,000 visitors per Market from all over the world!

Anacortes Cannabis carries on the legacy of its veteran founder

James Stevens and Eugene Leonard first opened Anacortes Cannabis as a medical dispensary in November 2013. With the legalization of recreational marijuana three years later, their store consolidated its status as Anacortes’s best and largest medicinal and recreational source for THC, CBD, and newly popular CBG, CBN and CBC cannabinoid products. Starting with just four employees at its founding, Anacortes Cannabis now has a staff of ten and a sister store in Freeland on Whidbey Island.

“We pride ourselves in

always providing the best customer service to our customers,” says Leonard. “Our staff is always going above and beyond to help ensure customers are happy with the products they receive and help educate when needed.”

Anacortes Cannabis’ customer service philosophy is an outgrowth of its commitment to cannabis and its benefits, going back to James Stevens promotion of its legalization with lawmakers in Olympia. A US Navy veteran, James also founded a company that helped people obtain their medical marijuana cards in

Washington State prior to the legalization of cannabis for recreational use. Stevens passed away in 2019, but his legacy lives on with his partner and staff.

“We are a medically endorsed dispensary with

several team members that are certified and ready to help our customers with their cannabis needs,” says Leonard. “Staying up to date is an ever present challenge in our industry, and we pride ourselves on keeping up with

continued change.”

Anacortes Cannabis offers a wide variety of daily promotions through its Facebook and Instagram accounts, including an on going discount for veterans with proof of service. The latest specials as well as a menu of products can viewed on the store’s website: www. anacortescannabis.com
