Letter from Sedro-Woolley Mayor Julia Johnson:
Welcome to Sedro-Woolley, gateway city to the North Cascades and home to the greatest Rodeo and longest running Loggerodeo™ parade in the State of Washington.
With the pandemic behind us, Sedro-Woolley continues to see new growth and development city-wide, with our population expanding to just over 13,000 over the past year. Our downtown business district has welcomed new stores and restaurants, as well as a beautiful library. We celebrate this growth, but also honor those businesses that have spanned generations: Rothenbuhler Engineering Co, Lemley Funeral Chapel, Stiles & Lehr Inc., P.S law firm, OliverHammer Clothes Shop, and Janicki Logging & Construction, just to name a few. All have served our community well and continue to do so.
Sedro-Woolley is a great place to live, and we enjoy sharing our heritage with visitors through the multiple festivals we celebrate throughout the year. From Blast from the Past to the Loggerodeo™, Founders’ Day, and the Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting, we have maintained a hometown feel and community spirit. Our community spirit is probably best experienced during Loggerodeo™ where you can take in the Chainsaw Carving Competition and Auction, Beard Contest, and Carnival. e Grand Parade and climactic fireworks are always a hit as well. e Loggerodeo™ provides something for everyone.
As Mayor, I have the wonderful opportunity to serve and work with a talented staff and conscientious city council, who, along with past city councils, has helped create several trails to explore at the SWIFT Center and Veterans Park, as well as the Cascade Trail that runs from Sedro-Woolley to Concrete, WA.
From spring to fall you will find families, friends, and class reunions hosting BBQs, and other events such as music festivals in one of our parks. In addition, we have several playfields that have hosted state tournaments; they are always in use, whether it be little league, softball, pee-wee football, or soccer teams, our spring and summer afternoons resound with much activity in our playfields.
We are a progressive city, and I would be remiss if I did not mention the continued innovation in technology, aerospace, and other related fields we are achieving. All this while maintaining our small-town Americana feel. ere is much to be proud of and celebrate here in Sedro-Woolley and we welcome all to join us. I am honored to have this opportunity to serve as Sedro-Woolley’s mayor and I hope to see you around town or at one of our city events.
Julia M. Johnson Mayor of Sedro-Woolley

What Makes Sedro-Woolley Unique?
City of Sedro-Woolley
Sedro-Woolley has always been a special place. Originally, the area was two separate towns called Sedro and Woolley, officially becoming “Sedro-Woolley” when the towns merged into one on December 19, 1898. The town is deeply connected to its history through the descendants of its founding families and through its many historical buildings and wood carvings. In fact, Sedro-Woolley is the official Chainsaw Carving Capitol of Washington State and
the Pacific Northwest and has the longest running 4th of July celebration/parade in the state!
Sedro-Woolley is known as the “Gateway to the North Cascades” because of its location between the scenic Cascade Loop drive to the east and Puget Sounds’ San Juan Islands to the west. The North Cascades recreation area attracts 750,000 visitors every year. The Cascade Loop, which is over 400 miles long, has designation as a National Scenic Byway.
The city is situated just minutes from Interstate-5 on Highway 20, midway between Vancouver, Canada and Seattle, Washington.
Sedro-Woolley offers a high quality of life with a small-town atmosphere. The growing community is brought together through year-round events including Loggerodeo™, Blast from the Past, and the Lighted Christmas Parade; all located near the charming downtown. The city is continuing its evolution from timber to tech, which has brought a younger, more modern feel to the downtown scene.
For many, it’s the easy access to beautiful parks, fishing, skiing, the San Juan Islands, and over 100 miles of trails that are the biggest draw. Families are also eager to move to Sedro-Woolley because of the well-rated school district that has built a reputation for strong public-private partnerships that serve the community and local businesses. Sedro-Woolley is simply a great place to visit and live!

Murals and Wood Carvings
Tourists come to see the beautiful wood carvings and murals spread through the downtown area of the city, mostly along Metcalf Street. The carvings come from the annual chainsaw carving competition - part of the Loggerodeo™ festivities. Many of the painted murals were inspired by world-famous photographer Darius Kinsey, who had a photo-studio in Sedro-Woolley in the late 1890s. He was known for his emphasis on Western scenery, logging, and railroads.
Community Demographic and Economic Profile
Sedro-Woolley’s 2024 population is 13,368, making it the 106th largest city in Washington State. Sedro-Woolley has experienced a 7.62% population increase since the most recent census, which recorded a population of 12,421 in 2020. The median household income in 2022 was $72,281. Transportation
Sedro-Woolley is served by the Skagit Regional Airport in Burlington (owned and operated by the Port of Skagit, it offers corporate, business, and recreational flying services), the Burlington Northern Santa Fe and Union Pacific freight rail lines, Amtrak passenger rail service, and a regional transit system. The city is also a one-hour drive to the Paine Field Airport in Everett, a half hour drive to the Bellingham International Airport, and a one-and-a-half-hour drive to the Sea-Tac International Airport. With city growth expected to occur mostly north of SR20, the Jones/John Liner Trail Road Corridor projects will provide an important east-west corridor for relieving traffic congestion on SR20. The projects will also provide pedestrian and non-motorized facilities to enhance connections between neighborhoods.

The Foundations K Program is designed for students turning five between September 1 and August 31, who show need in academics, emotional/social development, fine and gross motor skills, and language development. The program, located at Big Lake, Central, Lyman, and Mary Purcell elementary schools, aims to provide tailored support to ensure a
successful transition to kindergarten. Parents or guardians interested in enrolling their child are encouraged to complete the application process promptly for the early October start date. Visit www.swsd.k12. wa.us/page/foundations-k.

CASCADE MIDDLE SCHOOL
As students transition to Cascade Middle School, they embark on a journey of growth and exploration. At CMS, high levels of learning and collaboration lay the groundwork for success, preparing students for the next chapter of their educational journey.

clear: to prepare them for success in life beyond the school gates.
With a commitment to student success, SWHS offers a diverse array of class options spanning all subject areas. From Advanced Placement (AP) courses to College in the High School (CiHS) classes, in partnership with Skagit Valley College and Central Washington University, SWHS provides students with the tools they need to thrive in an ever-evolving world.
The CiHS program allows students in grades 9-12 to seamlessly integrate college coursework into their high school experience, all at a minimal cost. With opportunities to earn college credits while still in high school, students can leap confidently into their future endeavors, equipped with both knowledge and experience.
STATE STREET HIGH SCHOOL
As an alternative to SWHS, State Street High School’s core program
places an emphasis on preparing students with the skills needed to earn and pass the state mandatory testing and earn a high school diploma. SSHS combines small class size with a very caring environment to support students both academically and in personal growth. State Street’s HomeCentered Program is designed for students who work best independently. To be successful, students must be competent in basic skills, especially reading and math. Students work at home for 24 hours a week. Log sheets that document the hours worked must be turned in each week and students must complete a minimum of one credit every six weeks.
Whether you’re considering a move to the area or simply seeking educational excellence for your child, the SedroWoolley School District invites you to embark on a journey of discovery and growth. From its scenic surroundings to its unwavering commitment to student success, they’re more than just a school district — they’re a community dedicated to empowering futures and shaping destinies. The Sedro-Woolley Museum has been a special part of the Sedro-Woolley community for more than 30 years. The museum celebrates the city’s evolution from its frontier origins to the present day, making it a beloved resource for both Sedro-Woolley locals and visitors from around the country and the world. The museum is operated by an all-volunteer staff of Sedro-Woolley residents and most exhibits were built with materials donated by members of the community. JoEllen Kesti was elected as museum board president and executive director in November, 2022. She, alongside her equally passionate board members and volunteers, aims to keep the museum alive for many generations to come.
The museum volunteers work to refresh and add new exhibits every year to keep things interesting. This year, the team is celebrating the expansion of the Northern State Hospital exhibit. “We’ve created an operating room with an operating table from Northern State. There will be new artifacts and stories, along with the history of our local doctors and hospitals,” said JoEllen.
This winter and spring, the museum’s exterior was updated and repainted and the exterior artifacts were organized and moved to the south side of the building to make them more accessible for viewing.
The museum’s entrance is decorated with Carnegie light pillars and other memorabilia salvaged from the old library. Exhibits include the Cokedale Mine and the replica of a frontier town, with a barn, blacksmith shop, and school house. The Main Street exhibit has a life-like post office, jail, saloon, bank, and newspaper office. Other exhibits feature railroads, logging,
tributes to the military and the town’s “Founders, Movers, and Shakers”, and the Skagit Steel gallery that highlights one of the city’s major local industries. In August, 2023, the museum collaborated with the Upper Skagit Tribe to create a large exhibit featuring the rich history of the people of the Upper Skagit Tribe.
The Research Library is always growing with new archival collections, photographs, maps, newspapers, and other materials that help researchers and families find answers to their questions about the area’s history and past community members. The Gift Shop offers a fun, fresh selection of books and postcards about local history. Locally made gift items such as candles are available, as well as museum T-shirts, travel mugs, and hats. There are also a variety of historical treasures available for purchase, including tea towels with recipes from the 1921 Sedro-Woolley Women’s Club, a historical map from 1913, and a historical Northern State Hospital calendar
(available in August, 2024).
The Sedro-Woolley Museum’s annual membership drive is in January, but people are welcome to join in person or on-line throughout the year.
