Vuelta La Luna Circus

Wednesday-Saturday Show Times: 1:15 p.m., 4:15 p.m., & 7:15 p.m. Grounds entertainment: middle grass zone just north of the carnival area For the first time ever the Vuelta La Luna Circus is coming to the Skagit County Fair, all four days! Audiences will be entertained with character driven shows including clown skits, shadow puppetry, and experimental acts with a family forward focus on fun! The cast is made up of local artists from the Pacific Northwest region. They will perform three shows daily, about 20 minutes each. After each performance, the circus ring will be open for poses and pictures, as well as teaching a first move or lesson! Costumed jugglers and entertainers will be doing roving acts in between performances. There will be an interactive Kids Zone next to the tent with big games like Jenga and cornhole, custom-made hula hoops, and a box of costumes and props for a dress up “selfie” circus. Said Ring Master Jason Barker, “As a traveling circus, we love to meet new people as we inspire and teach kids (and big kids too) the skills it takes to have fun at the circus. The Skagit County Fair is a great place to do that.” Vuelta is a traveling variety circus made up of a curious collection of aerialists, dancers, fire-breathers, clowns, acrobatics, jugglers, stilt walkers, and more! Every show is always a little different and constantly evolving. Each entertainer is tasked with creating new performance 26

material every season to ensure that the show stays fresh and interesting. This includes costumes, props, music, story line, etc. Original scores and world music compliment all the performances and tantalize the senses. Vuelta La Luna began as a love story in 2012, when a touring musician and a fire dancer fell in love. Jason met Deanna Riley and began working with a team of entertainers to do city and municipal shows -mostly music/fire performances throughout the Puget Sound area. For a Christmas present, Jason bought Deanna a one-month gift certificate to fly on a trapeze and learn circus aerials at a local place in Seattle. Deanna fell in love with it and after investing in an aerial rigging, they started performing in small shows throughout the greater Seattle area.

mances per year…. Until 2019 when the world went on “vacation.” The Circus was forced to put its gear in storage and refund tickets for all the cancelled shows. Now as the world has been returning to normal, the festivals and shows have returned. Said Jason, “The Circus is once again thriving and we are excited to be out doing what we do best: inspiring everyone to follow their dreams, taught through the love of our dream called Circus! Vuelta la Luna means to turn or to carve the moon in Spanish. The moon has always been associated with creativity and also craziness! If anyone dreams of running away to join, or in our case create, the circus,

In 2016, the couple received a phone call asking if they could put together a circus. They had everything but a circus tent but after a little negotiating and a lot of searching, they worked out a three-year deal to buy a tent. Presto! Vuelta La Luna was born! By summer 2018 the group was performing their little circus throughout the greater Pacific Northwest with over 150 perforgoskagit.com

they have to be very creative…and also very a little crazy! Our circus is about the path of how to follow your dreams! All too many times in life, we are taught about what we should do but we have collected a curious group of people who dared to develop their natural talents and gifts to do something they love. In today’s struggles, our circus is designed to help teach and inspire how anyone can work toward following their dreams!” With most of the shows happening spring through fall, Jason

and Deanna spend 70-80 hours per week preparing for circus performances in the first several months of the year. Said Jason, “Deanna and I are building toward a full-time career. Many of the 20 performers we work with are full-time entertainers, working with Vuelta La Luna along with other outfits or jobs in the industry.” Jason and Deanna have big dreams for Vuelta La Luna. “Vuelta is not a fly by night operation, we work hard to build relationships that will help us reach our goal of becoming a full moving year-round circus. We started in Seattle, then branched out to the suburbs, then

down south to Olympia. This year, Vuelta is moving into conventions and county fairs across Washington with plans to branch-out multi state. Mostly on the West Coast but also into Texas, Idaho, and Nevada.” Barker said. The group has performed at many corporate and community events in the Seattle and Pacific Northwest region over the years. Don’t miss them at the Fair! Upcoming shows include Kitsap Fair and Stampede, August 24-28, and Othello County Fair, September 14-17. Learn more at https://vueltalaluna.com/

We will have a booth in the food court where fairgoers can see look at old scrapbooks from the Fair and share their own Fair Memories via the podcast series, “Share Your Fair,” hosted by Don Wick. In addition, Don will co-host a series of interviews with people whose history with the Fair gives them unique insights into the role it has played in our community. These interviews, which are open to the public, will take place at noon and 3:00pm daily, and will be broadcast through Meyer Sign’s “Tales of the Magic Skagit” series on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.

We want to “stirrup” some memories, so come Share Your Fair with us!
