he Leadership Skagit Class of 2020 will be defined by its ability to adapt and excel amid extraordinary circumstances unseen by the 16 classes before it. Indeed, a fair argument can be made that LS 2020 is definitely the Most Resilient Class Ever! This year’s class saw the long-planned December departure of beloved founding Leadership Skagit Director Kathryn Bennett. As she continues her own leadership journey, we are fortunate to honor her legacy with a new program scholarship in her name. Thank you for all you’ve done, Kate! In January, EDASC welcomed new Leadership Skagit Program Manager Mary Heffernan Trester who, together with Curriculum Manager Dr. Laura Flores Cailloux of Skagit Valley College, spearheaded the COVID-19 remote learning adaptations that awaited the final quarter of the class of 2020. Leadership Skagit, as you know, is a program of EDASC in partnership with Skagit Valley College. We are delighted to have Mary bring her talents and experience to enhance our efforts, and are very fortunate to have Laura’s expertise in updating and validatLEADERSHIP SKAGIT 2020

ing the curriculum, ensuring that the JEDI principles (Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) permeate every aspect of the program. Undoubtedly the program will continue to be meaningful, beneficial and enriching for all participants. I was proud to see how well the class and instructors adapted to video conferencing and other technology solutions, enabling participants to continue to meet for Challenge Days and complete the curriculum. The program pivoted impressively and the participants expressed how much they gained from the entire experience, both in leadership learning and a deep, holistic understanding of the community. Congratulations, Leadership Skagit Class of 2020. You have learned resiliency better than many and your next leadership journey awaits. We can’t wait to see what comes next. We know it will benefit our entire region! Congratulatory message to LS 2020 As we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns—the ones we don’t know we don’t know. -Donald Rumsfeld Here we are, wrapping up the most extraordinary year for Leadership Skagit and celebrating the most nimble, resilient and courageous class: the Leadership Skagit Class of 2020. Last fall we expected the normal Leadership Skagit challenges. A group of strangers comes together, builds common understanding, finds common passions and concerns, and works toward impacting the community for the better. This was known. You jumped in and embraced the traditions of Leadership Skagit, formed teams, identified community partners and started projects. The year was rolling along. We all knew it would be a year of transition as our most competent and beloved founding director, Kathryn Bennett, informed us she would be moving on to new leadership challenges. In December we said goodbye to Kate and in January we welcomed Mary Heffernan Trester as our new program manager. This was our known unknown, and the transition was smooth as Mary immediately began learning more about Leadership Skagit, working with the alumni committee and recruiting for the incoming class of 2021. Then just before Economic Vitality Day in mid-March our first unknown unknown hit, as we realized there would be no rapid return to normal in the face of COVID-19. As leaders in our homes, community and places of work, we were called upon to change work priorities and, in some cases, our very jobs or entire approach to working. The Class of 2020 reimagined ways of doing EDASC www.skagit.org

business, stepped into front line caregiving roles, and struggled to preserve organizations and businesses in our community. You did this while taking care of family and friends. You did this while continuing to engage in Leadership Skagit and serve the new realities of your community partner. Researcher Brené Brown describes vulnerability as “the greatest measure of courage,” and defines it as “having the courage to show up and be seen when we have no control over the outcome.” By this definition, the Class of 2020 modeled courageous leadership at every turn as you negotiated uncertainty on every front of our daily lives. Little did we know COVID-19 would not be our only crisis, and we soon had to grapple with what some are calling the pandemic of racism in our country made visible again after the

killing of George Floyd. We touched on the concepts of Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion on Challenges continued on pg. 6

Building Leaders Today to Shape Our Tomorrow Leadership Skagit is a program of the Economic Development Alliance of Skagit County (EDASC) in partnership with Skagit Valley College (SVC). The mission of Leadership Skagit is to strengthen and transform communities by developing individual, business, and community leadership that is informed, inclusive, and connected through shared learning experiences. Leadership Skagit is designed for new and emerging leaders and provides the opportunity to build new skills, gain unique perspectives and put leadership skills into practice. Leadership Skagit has been the premier leadership program in the county since 2003. In that time, it has graduated over 500 community leaders.

Building a Foundation

Leadership Skagit includes new perspectives, conversations for change and actions for the greater good.

Dedication, involvement, inclusiveness, and innovation are the expected hallmarks of Leadership Skagit graduates. This Leadership Skagit Class of 2020 brings the program graduates to over 500 adding to the growing diversity, talent, and blend of experience in business, industry, government, non-profit and education.

Program Excellence

Leadership Skagit is a winner of the Governor’s Leadership Award, has membership in the WSU Extension “Hall of Champions” and is an innovative example of an alumnidriven program with recognition at the Association of Leadership Program’s biannual conference. In 2018, the board of directors and staff of Brigid Collins nominated and selected Leadership Skagit for the Community Leadership Award. The award recognizes Leadership Skagit’s accomplishments

in developing leaders who achieve excellence in their professional field while giving back to the community through board leadership and participation in civic life. Brigid Collins commended the Leadership Skagit program for giving local Brigid Collins staff the confidence and enhanced skills to become leaders in the Latino community and Skagit County.

Bringing Leaders Together

Leadership Skagit participants work in industry, business, education, nonprofit and government. Participants represent all sectors, races and cultural backgrounds professions, age, and experience. These leaders also work or reside in all areas in Skagit County from Conway to Concrete and Anacortes to Sedro-Woolley. This diversity allows these leaders the training and contacts necessary to step up as professionals continued on pg. 10

Learning About Skagit County Leadership Skagit curriculum combines leadership skill development with in-depth information on topics important to the future of our region. Class members tour industry and corporations; get an in-depth view of agriculture, non-profit services, the education system and innovative small businesses; and study the critical issues that impact families, infrastructure and economic development. Participants examine the resources and needs in Skagit County and look for opportunities for leadership involvement to help address these issues and opportunities for leadership involvement. The results are a deep understanding of our community challenges and potential which creates increased civic engagement. Skagit County Commissioner Lisa Janicki, a graduate of Leadership Skagit in 2005,

has seen the growth of the program and states, “I’ve lived in Sedro-Woolley for more than 30 years, but Leadership Skagit re-introduced me to the rich and diverse community called Skagit County. More importantly, I walked away knowing the Leadership Skagit graduates were making a difference in their profession and in our world. I cherish the friendships I formed in Leadership Skagit.”

Building Leaders Today to Shape Our Tomorrow The Leadership Skagit Class of 2020 began their leadership journey in September 2019 and, like all of us, this class of 30 found itself facing the greater issues brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic and social distancing mandates. Harnessing lessons learned in the nine-month program, the class was able to pivot, mobilize and move the ever-impactful Challenge Days into the virtual world. In the meantime, the teams never lost sight of their

community commitments and the opportunity to make real impact by completing the service projects, listed below. The final retreat, presentations and graduation for the Leadership Skagit Class of 2020 have been moved to September 30 and October 1, 2020. Like all great leaders, this class is ready to commemorate and celebrate their accomplishments whether it be in

LEADERSHIP SKAGIT 2020

On behalf of the Marathon Anacortes Refinery, we proudly congratulate Krysta Fast on her Leadership Skagit journey. Krysta and her team the Kaizenauts partnered with the Pacific Northwest Trail Association and Friends of the Forest to develop plans for Trailhead Kiosks to provide essential information for the safety and enjoyment on the trails. “I was enrolled into the 2020 Leadership Skagit program before I even arrived in Washington! I am from a small town in West Virginia and moved across the country to work in HR at the refinery. I am very grateful to the leaders in my organization that saw leadership potential in me before they even met me! Leadership Skagit gave me the opportunity to develop relationships in the community that I would never have developed with only a year in the Skagit County. - Krysta Fast LS Class of 2020
