n its sixth decade, the Festival offers the audience a landscape of artistic options. As you navigate the streets of downtown Anacortes, starting at 10th Street, you’ll find 250 juried booth artisans — the heart of the Festival. Interspersed is a new Wine Garden and adjacent KPLU Stage on Eighth Street and a vibrant, active Youth Area on Seventh Street. Heading north to Fourth Street, you’ll intersect the Food Court, which includes regional and ethnic foods. The Festival Beer Garden and Main Stage on Third Street present a great place to pause and recharge. The beer is cold and the music is fast-paced and energetic. The landscape from Second Street to the water includes the Arts at the Port Fine Art Exhibition in the rustic Port of Anacortes Transit Shed Event Center at the north end of the street. This unique space features the work of 87 regional fine artists, and the youth art show. Definitely worth the walk! Saturday and Sunday, the Experience Art Area creates plenty of excitement between Third Street and the Port. Steamroller block printing combining art and heavy equipment mixes right in with glass blowing, chainsaw sculpture, wood turning, weaving, painting, sculpture, and ceramics . . . creative juices will flow. Whether you come for a day or the weekend, we hope that you will successfully navigate the Festival and find some hidden treasure to take away with you. 4

Arts at the Port will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday during Festival week, and then during regular Festival hours Friday through Sunday. The Art Gate fiber installation at the entrance of the exhibition space will be expanded this year to include photo panels from Focus Gallery artists.

opening – now free

The show opens with a free Opening Event from 6 – 8 p.m. Saturday, July 28. Artists and guests will mingle at this evening event that includes no – host wine and entertainment.

Annual Juried Competition The Juror: Barbara Matilsky, art curator for the Whatcom Museum in Bellingham, selected the work in this year’s Juried Competition. She received a PhD of Modern Art from the Institute of Fine Arts in New York and worked extensively in the field before moving to Washington. Of this exhibition she writes: “The beauty of the surrounding environment continues to inspire artists and they, in turn, provide us with new ways of appreciating both the intimate and sublime aspects of nature. Through diverse approaches, singular interpretations, and a variety of materials, these artists celebrate the balance between people and the distinct landscape that defines our home.”

FO C US G ALLERY This year’s John L. Scott Focus Gallery pays tribute to two talented Skagit County photographers who died in 2011 – Dick Garvey and Lee Mann. Both men traveled, taught and expressed an intense connection to their environment. Though their vision created very different images, both were masters of their craft. Stretching the bounds of photography, the Gallery also features the exciting work of Kathy Hastings from Snohomish and Ruth Westra from Camano Island.

LEE MANN – (1935 – 2011)

F

rom his humble beginnings, Mann had a connection to the unique Northwest environment. He was the product of a self – sufficient rural family that logged, hunted and lived off the land. After serving in the military during the Korean War, Mann got a teaching degree and taught until 1970, when he made the decision to pursue photography full time. He had a passion for mountain climbing that led him around the world – yet he always remained connected to the unique landscape of Skagit County. goanacortes.com

FO C US G ALLERY DIC K GARVE Y – (1952 – 2011)

G

arvey grew up the son of a Great Northern Railway worker, but spent most of his life in Anacortes. After graduating from Anacortes High School in 1970, he took off across county with his camera in hand. His passion for the camera landed him at the Brooks Institute of Photography in California where he developed his technical skills. He spent his professional career teaching, mentoring and chasing the light that was such an integral part of his work. He is well known for his large—format photographs encompassing the western landscape. 22
