s we began planning for you, the Leadership Skagit Class of 2022, we looked forward to being in real space together after a year and a half of virtual meetings due to the pandemic. Rather than re-create Leadership Skagit as it always had been, we combined the best of our tools and resources from virtual offerings with the rich experiential days and leadership projects that have always been a part of the program to create a vibrant and collaborative learning experience. It was not quite business as usual though as we managed the limitations and awkwardness of social distancing and masking while trying to build connections. I was so happy to get to see your smiling faces for the first time this winter! We also needed to learn how to offer the program in hybrid in-person and online mode to accommodate everyone who was quarantining. A big shout out to Locke Elder, LS ’20, who saw us struggling and stepped in to manage this new form of delivery. Many of you had to shoulder extra responsibilities caring for family, adding responsibilities as workplaces adjusted to post-pandemic workforce shortages and other demands. You have inspired us by staying committed to the demands of Leadership Skagit. We knew you were leaders before you even began and your resilience, engagement, and joy have been a testimony to that all year long.

your program days: Ecology Skagit (Alison Studley, LS ’05 Day Chair, Kevin Jackman, LS ’20, Carol MacIlroy); A Sense of Place (Janie Beasley, LS ’07 Day Chair; Mary McGoffin, LS ’13, Elinor Nakis, LS ’07); Communicating as a Leader (Mary Hudson, LS ’17 Day Chair, Danielle Baird Russell, LS ’14, Amanda Hubik, LS ’16, Brad Tuininga, LS ’18); Building a Healthy Community (Jammie Novak, LS ’21 Day Chair, Ben Thompson, LS ’21, Alan Muia, LS ’05); Law & Justice (Jennifer Sheahan Lee, LS ’17 Day Chair, Michelle Cook, LS ’15, Andy Dugan, LS ’21, Rosemary Kaholokula, LS ’17, Paul Nielsen, LS ’18, Eddie Rogge, LS ’19); Economic Vitality (Jarrod Ball, LS ’20, Heather Carter, LS ’21, Ellen Gamson, LS ’14); Community Services and Steward-

Leadership Skagit Class of 2022!

Our program would not be possible without the commitment of many of our graduates and other community volunteers. Our stellar volunteer facilitator who showed up every program day for the past two years is Jorge Estefan, LS ’20. We had 30 amazing leaders engaged in planning LEADERSHIP SKAGIT 2022

ship (Debra Lancaster, LS ’05 Day Chair, Peter Donovan, LS ’18, Isabela Ordonez, LS ’16, Kelly Reep, LS ’18); Arts & Culture (Anne Basye, LS ’18 Day Chair, Damond Morris, Spencer Pope, LS ’18, Andrea Vallee, LS ’07). These planning committees engaged 73 volunteers as guest speakers. In addition, our hard-working curriculum design team continued to refine the essential leadership learning for our program, introducing this content in the opening retreat, then weaving and deepening the learning across the program. The four themes that carry across all program days and the volunteers responsible for developing this content are: Reflection (Kara Stamback, LS ’12 & Kevin Jackman, LS ’20); Transformational Justice (Morgan Curry, LS ’20 & Locke Elder, LS ’20), Leadership & Teams (Laura Flores Cailloux and Danny Hagen, LS ’18) and Community Engagement (Mary Dumas, LS ’04 & Britta Eschete, LS ’06). As we prioritized curriculum content, our central question was, “What knowledge and tools do community leaders need in order to be inclusive and wise in these times?” With this shift in focus, your Leadership Skagit 2.0 journey began, online in Canvas for background materials on important issues and concepts, in small groups for project work, and in-person for challenge days. You began with a look inward

to clarify your values, and build on your strengths, knowing that ultimately leadership development IS self-development. Then you built on this self-awareness with reflection on the ways your experience and identity might have shaped and colored the lens through which you understand the world. You prepared to explore ideas that might challenge your worldview through awareness of your physiological reactions, and building stamina and curiosity to hang in there through discomfort, and to listen and learn.

Now each of you has claimed a leadership challenge that you will continue to work on after our program year ends. You used powerful storytelling to connect your values and vision into a story that is memorable and inspires action. You are approaching the work that is needed in our community as an inclusive listener who can embrace difference and engage adaptive and servant leadership frames to co-create change. I am certain as you apply this knowledge and skill you will be making your home, workplace, and community a better place. “The mission of Friends of Skagit Beaches is to protect Skagit shorelines and marine waters through education, citizen science, and stewardship. A major focus is reducing plastics in our waste streams by promoting reduced consumption, recycling, or finding alternatives. We are thrilled to work with Leadership Skagit on their plastic film recycling project since it integrates nicely into our organizational objectives. The relationship between Friends and Leadership Skagit is mutually beneficial. In return for providing them with the benefit of our collective knowledge and experience, they are helping us to connect with a wide variety of business interests. Over the past few years, Friends has worked closely with the Skagit County Solid Waste Division, local governments, state agencies, and other like-minded organizations to reduce plastics in the waste stream. We are pleased to welcome Leadership Skagit as another partner in our goal to reduce the plastics winding up in landfills.” - Chris Wood, Friends of Skagit Beaches

PROJECT NAME: Opioid Awareness and Narcan Training A free community forum to join forces with county treatment agencies and Skagit County professionals to help educate the public on the opioid epidemic in the Skagit valley. Provide information of signs and symptoms of overdose. Participants will be trained on how to administer nasal Narcan. Free Narcan and medication lockboxes will be provided during the event. In addition, county resources in prevention, intervention and recovery will be present to provide information and materials.

PROJECT NAME: Where does all that plastic go? The Wild Blue Yonder project helps address issues with thin film plastics recycling. We will provide community outreach and education using a tangible object that will last for years to come, a bench! This shows that the end goal of recycling can be to give materials a second life. The need within the Skagit County recycling community is urgent to clarify what can be recycled or reused and how. If it cannot be reused, it winds up in landfills or – worse – our waterways, oceans and natural lands where it persists forever. We collected 600 pounds of thin film plastic, turned it into a bench through a recycling program, created signage, and built an educational webpage.

PROJECT NAME: Oasis Teen Shelter Backyard Overhaul The Rising Tide team goal was to work with the Oasis Teen Shelter, listen to their needs and put it all into action as a team project. The shelter’s wishes centered around the enhancement of their outdoor space to compliment the amazing work that goes on inside. The project included adding elements of safety, security and privacy, a must when working with youth. The team installed landscaped fences of arborvitae trees, cedar split rail fences and custom wood entrance gates. These improvements offered improved functionality but also an aesthetic value to the backyard space. The team also wanted to add to the inviting respite qualities, fun and recreational side of the backyard too. This included some gardening elements, a propane fire pit, and a portable gaga ball pit. We were grateful to have the opportunity to put in the hard work of some much-needed grounds maintenance, to beautify the backyard space and give it a spring tune up. Overall, it was our hope to create a more safe, welcoming, and functional space for teens, a value central to Oasis Teen Shelter’s mission.

The mission of Leadership Skagit is to strengthen and transform our communities by developing individual, business, and community leadership that is informed, inclusive, and connected through shared learning experiences.

PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES I have gained confidence talking about my vision for a just, healthy and sustainable community in Skagit County.

I have integrated leadership frameworks and developed a reflective practice for the leader I want to be.

I have claimed a leadership challenge and have started to identify the relationships, resources and skills I will need to impact this challenge.

I have applied reflection, transformative justice, leadership, team development and inclusive community engagement to make progress on a community issue.

I can describe how my values bring purpose and meaning to my professional, personal, and community work.

I know some frameworks and principles for planning an inclusive process to learn about, engage in, and make progress on complex social problems.

I have practiced communicating values and vision using compelling images and stories, and speaking with authenticity, vulnerability, courage and commitment.

I appreciate the diverse thoughts and experiences of others and inclusively engage anti-racism and anti-oppressive practices as a leader.

I know strategies to encourage development of strong teams, support inclusion of diverse voices, and promote trust. I have incorporated aspects of behavioral, collaborative, ethical, adaptive and serviceoriented leadership models into my leadership practice.

I increased my willingness to: listen deeply through discomfort; ask questions; think about design; and amplify the voices of marginalized populations. I have increased my comfort level: using my voice to seek support and influence issues that are important to me; and responding when I must take a stand. I am ready to think collaboratively with others in order to deepen my understanding and find ways to create a more just and resilient community.
