Welcome to Sedro-Woolley! W

elcome to Sedro-Woolley, where quality of life is the primary reason people love to call it home. A town steeped in hometown charm, a vital center of recreation, and a great place to do business; we invite you to stay and explore what makes us unique—besides the name. Downtown Sedro-Woolley offers art work carved as tribute to its logging past as each year new chainsaw carvings are added to the streetscape. The downtown is working on revitalization and many buildings are receiving facelifts as growth is anticipated. When local owners invest in buildings one can truly see the pride that goes into creating a distinct impression. Significant growth in jobs and the economy are anticipated thanks to the Janicki BioEnergy project, known as the Omni Processor, funded for development by the Bill Gates Foundation. Peter Janicki designed and has started production on a machine that will change the world by processing human waste into clean energy and clean water, exceeding the goals set by the Gates Foundation. (See janickibioenergy.com) Hammer Heritage Square near the center of town is the place to be for many events such as Blast from the Past and the home of Sedro-Woolley Farmer’s Market open on Wednesdays from May to October. The events in town are generally family oriented, from Woodfest during Tulip Festival which focuses on student woodworking projects; an Easter egg hunt; a kids’ fishing derby in May; hula hoop, jump rope, and eating competitions during Blast from the Past in June; the Loggerodeo with 4

its carnival and grand parade in July; Halloween parade and merchant trick or treating in October; and wonderful Christmas events in December. If you want your family to experience something genuine, Sedro-Woolley offers plenty for visitors and residents alike. For motor enthusiasts there are two car shows every year in June and September and a motorcycle show has been added to this year’s Blast from the Past. Hitting Highway 20 or Highway 9 in any rig reminds you to enjoy the drive as you pass through the forests, mountains, and small communities away from the hustle and bustle of the Interstate. The town has several local parks and is surrounded by outdoor recreational opportunities from the North Cascades to the San Juan Islands, all just a short drive from the heart of Sedro-Woolley. At Riverfront Park on the Skagit River one can find plenty of picnic areas and restrooms, city maintained shelters that can be rented for reunions or other events, a

dog park, boat launch, and RV park. New playground equipment has been recently added to both Riverfront and Bingham Parks. The Rotary Club built an amphitheater a few years ago and has been holding free summer concerts in the park. You can also enjoy concerts at our lovely local winery, Eagle Haven on Sims Road east of town during the summer months, culminating at summers end with our Uncorked wine celebration. In 2012 the Rotary Club also built a new state of the art skate park that now attracts skateboarders from all over the region and an annual competition in the fall.

J

anicki Industries opened a new division called Janicki BioEnergy. In 2013 it was granted funding by the Bill Gates Foundation to manufacture a machine called the Omni Processor that aims to change sanitation and water treatment in the developing world. Local officials are working to setup the state-owned land at the old

Northern State Hospital grounds as an incubator campus for the project for research, development, training and production. More than 35 percent of the world’s population suffers from a lack of proper sanitation. Open pits serve as latrines and when they are not cleared out quickly enough, raw sewage overflows into living spaces. Worse, many septic companies hired to remove sewage dump untreated waste in local rivers, streams and bays that are used as drinking water. The sewage then contaminates the water which kills more than 800,000 children each year. The opportunity here is to turn sewage into clean drinking water. Janicki BioEnergy builds machines of many different sizes that use biomass energy for sanitation, making clean water, and making electricity. The Model S100 can produce up to 10,800 liters of clean drinking water per day, satisfying all United States FDA and WHO clean water requirements. Emissions also meet or exceed all applicable United States EPA requirements. The Model S100 was shipped to Dakar, Senegal, in mid-February 2015 which is considered the perfect location for continuing development and measuring real-world performance. The goal is to furnish countries all over the world with this machine; at this time more than 50 countries have voiced their interest in the product. To keep up with demand, Janicki BioEnergy hopes to be producing one unit per day within five years. Peter Janicki’s goal is to create a system that is simple enough to be used by a layman and where the village could earn money to accept waste from surrounding communities.

Sedro-Woolley School District

S

edro-Woolley has a long and proud tradition of supporting its schools, teachers, and students with a focus on student-centered learning. Phil Brockman took over as the school superintendent in summer, 2013 and has continued the work of his predecessors. The school district mission states that “Every student graduates with the knowledge and skills for future learning and success.” This means using targeted strategies such as increasing K-12 focus on career, college, and life readiness; building assessment literacy and systems to support learning; increasing the use of quality student assessments; strengthening district programs and systems that support learning; and expanding communication about programs, services, and systems. Beginning in spring 2015, the school district began assessing students using the more rigorous Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA), which will create solid baseline data. The results of these efforts will be better preparation of career and college readiness skill. We are very proud of our schools; several of them being recognized as being “Schools of Distinction” based on sustained student achievement. The district has highly qualified and dedicated staff with over 70 percent of teachers holding masters degrees and many holding national board certifications. The district is ranked first in the county and has a 92.2 percent high school graduation rate, the highest in the county and one of the highest in the state. Sixth grade reading and math achievement levels are exceeding statewide assessment trends. Middle school students are showing progress skagitvisitor.com

Farm & Field Winery With growing conditions similar to France’s Loire Valley and the Northern Rhine Valley of Germany, Skagit County is home to a growing number of wineries. While Skagit’s winemakers import grapes from Eastern Washington growers, many have begun growing estate varieties in Skagit soil. White wine grapes such as Madeleine Angevine and Siegerrebe are known to grow well in Skagit’s mild climate, while Pinot Noir grapes are being grown at an increasing number of area vineyards. The valley grows 100 acres of wine grapes valued at more than $1 million, according to data from Washington State University.
