Welcome T
here are many reasons to celebrate SedroWoolley, which manages to retain its lumber-era charm while continuing to be a vital center of recreation. The downtown business community works hard to make the town’s core welcoming, and the historic downtown has seen some revitalization in the past few years. Sedro-Woolley’s identity is still tied to its timber roots — witness the immensely popular (and uniquely Sedro-Woolley) Loggerodeo, held during the
days surrounding the Fourth of July. Sedro-Woolley gives visitors a reason to come to town most months of the year. September brings Founders’ Day, in which the Sedro-Woolley Museum honors a founding family, and residents re-enact a famous 1914 bank robbery. Springtime events include Blast From the Past and Woodfest. In early December, the town hosts a huge Christmas parade and tree lighting. And in this old timber town, you can be sure the Christmas tree that stands in
the center of the main street is a beauty. Riverfront Park, on the south side of town on the Skagit River, is a popular spot with a covered picnic area, two shelters, barbecue pits in each shelter and throughout the park, more than 50 picnic tables, four restrooms and an RV park. There is also a boat launch with restrooms and a picnic table. In 2012, the city’s Rotary Club raised money to build a new state-of-the-art skate park that now attracts skateboarders from all over the state.

Blast from the Past
T
he good old days come alive again, during the annual Blast from the Past from May 31-June 2 in downtown Sedro-Woolley. Blast from the Past thrives on its 1950s theme, with numerous activities and attractions. There’s a classic car show, contests for the kids, cycling events, food vendors and much more. Visitors can celebrate the warmer weather with festivities that include local shopping, a sidewalk sale, arts, crafts, food from more than 50 vendors, an open house at the Sedro-Woolley Museum, a quilt show, “murder mystery” day at the SedroWoolley Library, a children’s costume parade on Saturday, live music and a pancake breakfast. It’s all free family fun, with hula-hoop, jump-rope and pieeating contests on Saturday and other activities and games.

Loggerodeo
S
edro-Woolley’s trademark celebration of its logging history has combined with its love of equestrian pursuits for more than 75 years. Something unique seems to happen every year, such as the Beard and Whisker Contest in 2009. It’s anyone’s guess what will pop up this summer in the annual Loggerodeo festivities, held this year June 28-July 4. One of the prime attractions is
the carnival, which holds courts in town for the several days at Riverfront Park at the south edge of town. Visitors can stop along the way at the rodeo grounds on Polte Road, take in the classic car show off Township Street, or shop at the craft bazaar in the park. Downtown, folks participate in the street dance and live music at Hammer Heritage Square, visit the chain-saw carving and

logging demonstrations, and watch the kiddie and grand parades. A tour of the Sedro-Woolley Museum, across from the old City Hall on Murdock Street, is an informative way to learn about the area’s early history. And a Fourth of July celebration without fireworks? Not a chance. The annual fireworks display is at Riverfront Park. Then there’s the Pro West Rodeo, with bareback riding, barrel racing and more. There is perhaps no tradition in Sedro-Woolley — or the region, for that matter — as well established as Loggerodeo. Like every great event, it continues to evolve; watch out for surprises this year! Chainsaw Carving I t’s quite the metamorphosis, from ordinary chunks of wood to works of art. That’s exactly what takes place at the Loggerodeo Chainsaw Carving Competition. For nearly 20 years, carvers from around the United States and the globe have carved competitively at the corner of Murdock and State streets in Sedro-Woolley during a fourday competition. Showpieces are carved that must stick to particular themes, including logging, rodeo or Northwest wildlife. Cash awards are given to the top three carvings. People’s Choice and Woodcarver’s Choice awards are also given. Quick-carve competitions, where carvers have one hour to create a carving, will be from 10:30 a.m. to noon. The quick-carve auction will begin at 5 p.m. each day. Carvers will have from 12:30-5 p.m. to work on more showpieces. On July 4, carvers will have from 8 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. to complete their showpieces. The quick-carve will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., with the auction to follow.

Firefighters Competition T here’s a lot that goes into the profession of firefighting, and spectators can get a glimpse of what that job entails at that annual Firefighters Competition, starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 29, at the SedroWoolley High School football field. The competition, part of the yearly Loggerodeo community celebration, demonstrates the variety of jobs firefighters are required to do on a daily basis. The competition will test firefighters’ mental toughness and physical stamina, as firefighters run hoses, climb ladders and more, all in full bunker gear. Additional tasks include climbing four stories, chopping, dragging hoses and rescuing a life-sized, 165-pound “victim” as they race against themselves, their opponent and the clock. There will also be a live fire demonstration as well as a ladder truck demonstration. The 2013 Washington Firefighter Competition is presented by the Sedro-Woolley Fire Department. A suggested donation of $5 will be accepted at the entry gate. All proceeds from this event will go towards firefighting equipment. Other exhibit spaces are filled with old saws and other equipment. They showcase the community’s military members, its main streets and the infamous bank robbery of 1914, complete with photographs of the robbers. House Decorating T hose who enter the house and business decorating contest, held during the Loggerodeo celebration, show their patriotism in many ways. Entrants are limited only by their imagination, and how they display their visions of patriotic red, white and blue. Flags, Fourth of July - or the celebration thereof - are the main topics, but be creative! About a dozen houses and a handful of businesses participate each year. Judges will stroll the streets, looking for the best use of the patriotic colors. Judging begins at noon on Friday, June 28. Anyone with a Sedro-Woolley address is invited to participate. Winners receive gift certificates and a placard. To enter the contest, pick up an application at the Sedro-Woolley Chamber of Commerce, 714-B Metcalf St.,or download one at www.loggerodeo.com. An announcement with the winners and addresses will be posted on the Chamber of Commerce door after the judging. For more information, call the chamber, 360-855-1841 or Loggerodeo, 360-770-8452.
Historic Homes M any communities in Washington state display a part of their history by the structures that visitors and residents drive past each day. Sedro-Woolley is no exception, and visiting the city’s historic home is a highlight of the holiday season. The 2013 Holiday Home Tour is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 14. The tour has been held since 1988, showing off some of SedroWoolley’s most treasured homes.
Organizers try to showcase older homes, focusing on those built in the early 1900s. Attendees will be given a map with addresses of the decorated homes; the tour is self-guided, so visitors should bring a flashlight and dress for winter weather. Tickets can be purchased in advance or on the day of the tour, which typically features 6-8 homes and draws upwards of 300 visitors.
For more information, call the SedroWoolley Museum at 360-855-2390.

Founders’Day S
edro-Woolley celebrates its wild, whoopin’-it-up past with a re-enactment of a famous robbery, games, a museum open house and an honoring of one of its pioneering families during its annual Founders’ Day event, to be celebrated this year Sept. 7-8. The event kicks off Saturday morning with a community breakfast served up at the SedroWoolley Community Center at 715 Pacific St. Pancakes, eggs, biscuits and gravy are usually on the menu, but the volunteers often add surprises! After breakfast, visitors can watch the heart-pounding action of a shootout by the “Loco Players,” the “bandits” in early-20th century cowboy gear at the SedroWoolley Museum at 725 Murdock St. The re-enactment pays homage on the October 1914 robbery of the Sedro-Woolley First National Bank downtown. The robbers got away with $12,000 but were later gunned down by a local posse. So be warned: the streets may be full of gamblers, miners, saloon floozies and lawmen! The Museum also opens its doors to visitors and holds a ceremony to honor a chosen pioneer family that helped shape the city into what it is today. Sunday’s events include a car show at Riverfront Park, with some 350 classic cars from Canada to Seattle. Owners begin arriving with their wheels around 7 a.m. Also on Sunday, the community picnic is a highlight, with hot dogs, drinks, desserts and kids’ games and activities. 16 • Celebrating Sedro-Woolley • May 2013

Childrens Halloween Parade I s there anything kids love more than trick-or-treating? How about showing off their costumes in a yearly Halloween parade? Sedro-Woolley gives children the chance to do both this year. Ghosts, goblins, superheroes, vampires and more emerge on Halloween night - Thursday, Oct. 31 - at 5 p.m. at the municipal building at 325 Metcalf Street. This marks the start of the parade route, where revelers are invited to show off their costumes. That’s followed by trick-ortreating, for which downtown businesses provide the treats. Boo!
