Additionally, rain gardens and rain barrels can be used to reduce the amount of water you use outside (Skagit Public Utility District, www.skagitpud.org, has more information). Landscaping
Can Make or Break Home’s First Impression By Thom Richter, Chair SICBA Home and Garden Show Your front yard is the “face” of your house: the first thing people see when they visit you. Whether you plan to landscape your front yard for your own pleasure, or to prepare your house for sale, make sure it looks its best. After all, you never have a second chance to make a good first impression. Before you make the first trip to the nursery, determine what your long-term goal is for the front yard. Would you like trees for shade, grass for the kids to play on, or flowers and plants to cater to your gardening hobby? Once you have your yard’s purpose in mind, do some homework. It is important to monitor the cycles of light and moisture in your yard. Take note where the sun is at different times of the day. Watch for areas of daylong shade or sun so you can match the plants to their lighting needs. Also, take a sample of the dirt in your yard to a lawn and garden center and ask them to determine the pH and chemical composition of your soil. Your soil’s characteristics will have a significant impact on what you will be able to grow successfully. 4
December 2, 2011
Think locally. Choose trees, flowers, shrubs and other plants that are common where you live. By choosing plants that are native or are tolerant of our weather, your yard will require less work and give you better results. Find out what is native to your area by contacting the WSU Extension Service in Mount Vernon. For a garden, keep in mind two key elements — shape and texture. To give character to your garden, select a variety of plants of different shapes and sizes. For example, combine hostas which have large, coarse leaves with small flowery shrubs such as azaleas. Also, keep architectural details in mind when you choose plants. Rough, textured plants will highlight stucco walls, but a picket fence will look better with soft flowers and gentle vines. Finally, keep it simple. Make sure your landscaping complements the structural details of your home instead of overwhelming it. By taking a few additional steps in the planning process, you’ll spend more time enjoying your yard instead of working in it. And, if you are preparing your house for sale, you’ll see an added benefit since a wellplanned landscape adds value to any piece of property.

Put simply, the Fed is locking in today’s rates. Like homeowners, if rates continue to go down it can refinance, if rates rise the Fed will simply continue to pay off current loans at today’s low cost. While low rates are certainly desirable for borrowers, in the general scheme of things it would actually be better if rates began to rise. The reason is that rising rates suggest more capital demand, more capital demand would likely mean more jobs and more jobs could lead to increased real estate demand. By Peter G. Miller

A Plan to Prevent Home Problems
It’s an unfortunate part of homeownership - things break down. Heating and cooling systems have limited lifespans and can cost thousands to replace. Home appliances go on the fritz or the plumbing system shuts down, and before you know it, you’ve had hundreds of dollars worth of unexpected repairs to deal with. leaky faucets, and so on. However, the to-do list of preventaOne thing that can help with unexpected costly repairs is preventive maintenance. In fact, think of it as giving new meaning to the phrase “home health.” Just like your annual physical, preventative maintenance can play a critical role in keeping your home’s systems and appliances running smoothly and efficiently. Unfortunately, without a professional preventative maintenance program, most home systems and appliances never get a thorough check-up, leaving them vulnerable to costly and often avoidable - problems. Along with the convenience and confidence of regularly scheduled check-ups, homeowners can also realize other benefits, too, such as reduced energy costs, improved system reliability and lower repair costs over the life of their covered items. “Preventative maintenance is an investment in the health and well-being of your home’s systems and appliances,” said Matt Wendl, director of American Home Shield’s new preventative maintenance service, which the company recently launched in 45 markets across the nation. “Early detection of problems can help eliminate the need for more costly re-

Top 10 Kitchen Remodeling Considerations Remodeling your kitchen can seem like a daunting task at first glance. You want your new space to function well for your needs, accommodate your lifestyle, and reflect your personal design style. But how to get started? Sarah Reep, KraftMaid director of designer relations and

education, recommends considering the following before you begin a kitchen remodel.
1
Determine the remodel scope. Projects can range from replacing the kitchen countertops to completely reconfiguring the kitchen’s floor plan.
2
Identify ways your kitchen remodel can complement your lifestyle. Do you want an open floor plan with room for entertaining? Do you enjoy cooking? To make your kitchen functional, all of these elements should play a part in the layout of a room.
3
Choose your involvement. Is this a do-it-yourself project or do you need to call in the pros? If you plan on doing it yourself, seek guidance from designers.
4
Find the remodeler or design firm right for you. When looking for a remodeler, seek

LED Holiday Lights: 6 Need-to-Know Tips Should you chuck all your good old holiday light strings and buy new LED holiday lights? Here’s how to decide.
1. LED holiday lights save you money. LED lights use at least 90% less energy than traditional holiday lights, according to the U.S. government’s Energy Star program. 2. But LED lights typically cost more than old-fashioned holiday lights.
Shop around because a growing number of retailers are offering sales on LED holiday lights and, if you can’t find a sale before the holidays, you can certainly find one after. 4. You can string a BIG strand of LED lights. Safety wise, you shouldn’t connect more than three traditional light strings, but you can connect up to 87 LED holiday light strings, totaling a whopping 1,500 feet! So blow your neighbor’s display away by cocooning your house in lights: 5. LED lights reduce the risk of fire. They stay cooler than incandescent bulbs, according to Energy Star.
6. How about that hue?
Colored and color-changing LED holiday lights are more vibrant than conventional lights, making your display easier to see from the street.
