SUCCESS STORIES!

FUTURE PURSUITS

DAY RECAP Students learn about careers during the 2nd Annual Future Pursuits Day

I

On March 4th, the Friends of Archbishop Ryan High School hosted its second annual Future Pursuits Day. FARHS welcomed back over 25 Alumni, including ESPN broadcaster, Brian Jaskelewicz (Class of ‘93). Jaskelewicz enjoyed seeing Ryan again after several years and re-connected with Mr. Robert Clothier the inspiration for his successful career in broadcast journalism at ESPN. Future Pursuits Day began with a keynote address from Jaskelewicz as well as City Councilman Dennis O’Brien. Councilman O’Brien spoke about his career in state and city politics. Most notably, Councilman O’Brien discussed the public service aspect of his career and a cause dear to his heart--his advocacy for children with disabilites, particularly autism. He highlighted the efforts that he has spearheaded over the years to increase funding and awareness for disabled individuals.

Future Pursuits Day was re-developed in 2013 by FARHS and chaired by FARHS Board Member Sean P. Killion (Class of ‘94). Killion joined the alumni panel of presenters in the following fields: finance, education, medicine, the arts, law enforcement/practice and business. Together, both Killion and the panel facilitated over 30 classroom discussions. In addition to presenting information on specific careers, Future Pursuits Day also encourages students to consider post-secondary education to fulfill their career aspirations.

2015 Future Pursuit Day will incorporate some changes to improve the program for future years. The goal will be to select a day when all juniors and seniors will be scheduled off from school for retreat. FARHS, as well as school administration, will work together to implement a full day program for students to attend, targeting each student’s career interests. Killion credits the commitment of the administration and faculty in their willingness to allow Alumni back to Ryan to speak to the students to the success of the program.

According to Killion, early discussions with the administration regarding plans for the SPRING 2014

SCHOOL UPDATE Dear Friends of Archbishop Ryan High School, In November, Pope Francis wrote, “We are living in an information-driven society which bombards us indiscriminately with data—all treated as being of equal importance—and which leads to remarkable superficiality in the area of moral discernment. In response, we need to provide an education which teaches critical thinking and encourages the development of mature moral values.”

Our focus on Catholicity is paramount at Archbishop Ryan. Mass is offered daily in our Chapel, the center of our school, at 7:10 am as well as monthly for the entire Archbishop Ryan Family. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is offered every Friday during lunch periods. Our students participate in a fouryear retreat plan that culminates with a Kairos retreat for over 200 students during their senior year. In addition to a service component during junior year, our students live their faith through deed by volunteering at the Sarnelli House twice a month serving meals to the homeless or by volunteering here at school and our surrounding neighborhood. Last, but certainly not least, our Community Service Corps is both the largest and the most active group in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

“IN ADDITION TO AN ACTIVE FAITH EXPERIENCE FOR OUR STUDENTS, ARCHBISHOP RYAN HIGH SCHOOL IS MEETING THE CHALLENGE OF PROVIDING A FIRST-CLASS 21ST CENTURY EDUCATION THAT MEETS THE NEEDS OF A VARIETY OF OUR STUDENTS.” Due to the support of the Friends of Archbishop Ryan High School, we are able to meet this challenge here on Academy Road. We are grateful that you truly “remain on the Vine” so our current students can experience the challenge of critical thinking that develops their moral compass.” To echo the Holy Father, the Secretary for Catholic Education in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, Mr. Christopher Mominey reminds us that central to our mission as a Catholic school is that “We equip saints for life in this world and in the next.”

8 SPRING 2014

In addition to an active faith experience for our students, Archbishop Ryan High School is meeting the challenge of providing a first-class 21st Century education that meets the needs of a variety of our students. Our partnership with the University of Pennsylvania and its Penn Literacy Network is developing literacy strategies to improve the academic performance of every student in the building. In advance of the changing SAT for the Spring of 2016, we believe we are ahead of the curve with this endeavor. This year our new comprehensive partnership with Holy Family University has provided more than 50 seniors the opportunity to earn six college credits by the end of the school year by taking college courses in our campus for dual credits. Our school’s Library Media Center features both “books and bytes” by presenting students with the opportunity to not only read books from the stacks but also access to scores of digital databases for scholarly works around the world.

Once her children were out of grade school, Coleen became involved with Villa Joseph Marie High School where she chaired the Mother Daughter Tea for 700 women. This is the largest event Coleen has coordinated to date, but she hopes to top this at some point in time! In addition to her involvement with the Friends of Archbishop Ryan High School board, Coleen is part time caregiver to her grandsons, an active member of the Donegal Association, and a committee member for the Philadelphia Mary from Dungloe Pageant.

About 10 years ago, Coleen started a fashion show and auction for the alumni. This eventually evolved into the Comedy Night and auction. She has also been on the committees for the shore reunions, Blackthorn Rocks Ryan, and many other SPRING 2014

FACULTY PROFILE Father Rene Barczak Written by John Langan, ‘78

In Archbishop Ryan High School’s 47 years of existence there has been only one constant presence... Father Rene Barczak.

went to Bishop Neuman in South Philly where his first assignment was to teach Economic Geography to seniors. “Never heard of it in my life, and I’m supposed to teach it to these guys who couldn’t give a darn about it! They were driving me up a wall!” Father Rene was part of the original faculty when Ryan opened its doors in 1966, and taught Religion. During the early years, he also earned a Masters Degree in Sociology and began to teach everything in social studies – World Cultures, Western Civilization, etc. Together with Terry Ryan, who was teaching in the girl’s school, Father Rene started teaching an elective called Social Justice. They would teach together on both sides of the school, inspiring students to get involved in the issues of the day. One story he tells is about a speaker who addressed the class about Cesar Chavez and the plight of the farm workers in California. Father Rene’s lesson to the class was, “Now you’ve heard the situation, we need to do something. Now we have to act on it!” He led a protest at the Acme on Academy Road with students trying to persuade the store to stock only union farmer’s lettuce. After a few weeks the stores were complaining to the school. Many former students still relate their memories to Father Rene about the great lettuce protest.

We know him as the smiling face at alumni functions, always so glad to see you and have a chat. Behind that image is a highly educated man with a history of service that many know nothing about. In June, Father Rene will be celebrated for his Golden Jubilee. Fifty years in the priesthood ministering to the students and alumni of Ryan, and the parishioners of Queen of Parish. He’s been described by contemporaries as a man of endless energy, from the first day he arrived at Ryan. That energy is contagious, and exudes from him today as he delights in relating stories from the early years – the history, the students and a faculty full of priests who were called by their first names “because no one could pronounce their Polish last names”. Father Rene was born on June 9, 1937 in Saginaw, MI. Like most Ryan alumni he was educated in Catholic schools. In his final year at St. Bonaventure Prep he was accepted as a member of the Franciscan Friars of the Assumption BVM Province. He earned a B.A. in Philosophy in 1960, then on to Christ the King Seminary where he completed a M.A. in Theology. One year after leaving the seminary in 1964 he got a call from Father Noel Wall, who told him to come to Philadelphia because they were going to be staffing a new high school. Before Ryan opened, he

There are hundreds of stories that Father Rene will gleefully relate. All of them contain great memories about his time with students. Ask him about the Black Panthers speaking in his class… that’s a good one! In the mid-eighties, the Archdiocese wanted the schools to revitalize relationships with their alumni. Father Leonard, principal at the time, offered the job to Father Rene. He was glad to take on the assignment, but did not want to give up teaching. After he

Ed Ulmer To last as a coach for a half-century, you have to learn to adapt. For Ed Ulmer, in his 50th year of coaching track and field and cross-country in the Catholic League, one of those times came way back in 1980. Ulmer had headed the Archbishop Ryan boys' program since the school opened in 1966, and 14 years later he was asked to take over the four-year-old girls' team. Ulmer had never coached girls. He assumed he would coach them the same way he had coached the boys. Then came the first bus ride to Belmont Plateau for a cross-country meet. On the bus, Ulmer found decorations and singing, chanting girls. They didn't have that same vitality on the course. The first Ryan finisher came in about 60th place. Ulmer was livid.
