The Nan Edwards Art Glass Collection Mrs. Edwards, known for her charitable work in the social circles of Montgomery, Alabama, met Arthur Cook in 1954, a noted collector of antiques who was well into his seventies. He had made up his mind to sell his collection of glass and furnishings. Mrs. Edwards admired art glass, particularly Tiffany, and in their common interest he had found a good steward for his collection. The Edwardses expanded Mr. Cook’s collection during their travels abroad to include English and French cameo glass, lamps, metalwork, and furnishings. Nan commented in Naples Now in 1980 that her lifelong passion for collecting was a tribute to her teacher, Arthur Cook.

The thoughtful and particular choice of tree and the art of working the wood into a unique finished piece of furniture is evident in the George Nakashima cabinet seen at lower left. Studio pottery has been a fast-growing field of collecting, attracting a diverse demographic. Potters create handsculpted, functional objects using a variety of forms, finishes, glazes, and building and firing techniques. Artistry brought to life through clay.
