Skinner, Inc. - Conditions of Sale 1. Some of the lots in this sale are offered subject to a reserve. The reserve is a confidential minimum price agreed upon by the consignor and Skinner, Inc. below which the lot will not be sold. In most cases, the reserve will be set below the estimated range, but in no case will it exceed the estimates listed. A representative of Skinner, Inc. will execute such reserves by bidding for the consignor. In any event and whether or not a lot is subject to a reserve, the auctioneer may reject any bid or raise not commensurate with the value of such lot.

2. All property is sold “as is,� and neither the auctioneer nor any consignor makes any warranties or representation of any kind or nature with respect to the property, and in no event shall they be responsible for the correctness, nor deemed to have made any representation or warranty, of description, genuineness, authorship, attribution, provenance, period, culture, source, origin, or condition of the property and no statement made at the sale, or in the bill of sale, or invoice or elsewhere shall be deemed such a warranty of representation or an assumption of liability.

3. Except as provided in paragraph 1 above, the highest bidder as determined by the auctioneer shall be the purchaser. In the case of a disputed bid, the auctioneer shall have sole discretion in determining the purchaser and may also, at his or her election, withdraw the lot or reoffer the lot for sale.

4. All merchandise purchased must be paid for and removed from the premises the day of the auction. Skinner, Inc. may impose, and the purchaser agrees to pay, a monthly storage charge of 1.5% of the purchase price of any lot or portion of a lot not removed by the purchaser within three (3) business days after the date of sale. Skinner, Inc. shall have no liability for any damage to property left on its premises for more than three (3) days after the date of sale. At the option of Skinner, Inc., the merchandise may be transferred to and stored at a bonded warehouse and the purchaser agrees to pay all transfer and storage expenses. Skinner, Inc. may impose, and the purchaser agrees to pay, a monthly interest charge of 1.5% of the purchase price of any lot or item not paid by the purchaser within thirty-five (35) days of the date of sale.

5. Skinner accepts cash or check for payment. Personal checks will be acceptable only if credit has been established with Skinner, Inc. or if a bank authorization has been received guaranteeing a personal check. Skinner, Inc. reserves the right to hold merchandise purchased by personal check until the check has cleared the bank. The purchaser agrees to pay Skinner, Inc. a handling charge of $25.00 for any check dishonored by the drawee. Please contact Accounting for additional payment methods. Skinner does not accept payment by credit card for merchandise purchases.

6. If the purchaser breaches any of its obligations under these Conditions of Sale, including its obligation to pay in full the purchase price of all items for which it was the highest successful bidder, Skinner, Inc. may exercise all of its rights and remedies under the law including, without limitation, (a) cancelling the sale and applying any payments made by the purchaser to the damages caused by the purchaser’s breach, and/or (b) offering at public auction, without reserve, any lot or item for which the purchaser has failed to pay in full the purchase price, holding the purchaser liable for any deficiency plus all costs of sale.

7. In no event will the liability of Skinner, Inc. to any purchaser with respect to any item exceed the purchase price actually paid by such purchaser for such item.

8. Shipping is the responsibility of the purchaser. Upon request, our staff will provide the list of shippers who deliver to destinations within the United States and overseas. Some property that is sold at auction can be subject to laws governing export from the U.S., such as items that include material from some endangered species. Import restrictions from foreign countries are subject to these same governing laws. Granting of licensing for import or export of goods from local authorities is the sole responsibility of the buyer. Denial or delay of licensing will not constitute cancellation or delay in payment for the total purchase price of these lots.

9. All purchases are subject to the Massachusetts 5% sales tax unless the purchaser possesses a Massachusetts sales tax exemption number.

Exemption numbers from other states are accepted in Massachusetts if presented with a business card or letterhead. Dealers, museums, and other qualifying parties can apply for a Massachusetts exemption number prior to the auction by contacting the Massachusetts Department of Corporations and Taxation at 100 Cambridge Street in Boston.

10. Except for property purchased via on-line Live Auctions, a premium equal to 18.5% of the final bid price up to and including $200,000, plus 10% of the final bid over $200,000, will be applied to each lot sold, to be paid by the Buyer as part of the purchase price. The buyers premium on property purchased via on-line Live Auctions will be in the amount equal to 22.5% of the final bid price up to and including $200,000, plus 15% of the final bid over $200,000.

11. Bidding on any item indicates your acceptance of these terms and all other terms announced at the time of sale whether bidding in person, through a representative, by phone, by Internet, or other absentee bid.

12. Skinner, Inc. and its consignors make no warranty or representation, express or implied, that the purchaser will acquire any copyright or reproduction rights to any lot sold. Skinner, Inc. expressly reserves the right to reproduce any image of the lots sold in this catalogue. The copyright in all images, illustrations and written material produced by or for Skinner, Inc. relating to a lot, including the contents of this catalogue, is, and shall remain at all times, the property of Skinner, Inc. and shall not be used by the purchaser, nor by anyone else, without our prior written consent.

13. These conditions of sale shall be governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (excluding the laws applicable to conflicts or choice of law). The buyer/bidder agrees that any suit for the enforcement of this agreement may be brought, and any action against Skinner in connection with the transactions contemplated by this agreement shall be brought, in the courts of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts or any federal court sitting therein. The bidder/buyer consents to the nonexclusive jurisdiction of such courts and waives objections that it may now or hereafter have to the venue of any such suit.

As a complement to its auction preview, Skinner invites you to participate in its Jewelry Clinic, hosted by Mr. Hagop Matossian from Bostonian Jewelers.

Mr. Matossian, an antique and period jewelry restoration expert, is viewed by his peers in the industry as a pioneer in laser restoration techniques.

For the past 25 years, he has collaborated with dealers and private collectors on restoration and alteration projects. He will be available for individual consultations concerning items in the auction throughout the afternoon.

Bostonian Jewelers & Manufacturers, Inc., located in downtown Boston in the Jewelers Exchange Building, specializes in estate and period restoration, and custom design and manufacturing of jewelry. Family owned and operated since 1969, Bostonian Jewelers uses the latest in laser technology, and can restore even the most intricate of antique and period jewelry in platinum, gold, sterling silver, and base metal, as well as complicated enamel work.

Lots 155, 163, 184, 191, 192, 197, 242, 502, 509, 521, 658, 664 Helen Lee Caldwell was a leading designer of children’s clothes in Manhattan for three decades under the name Helen Lee. In 1953 she became the first children’s designer to win the Coty American Fashion Critics Award, for her designs for Youngland Inc. The award cited her “significant influence in the development of good taste and charm in children’s fashions.”

For the next three decades, Miss Lee designed clothes for infants, girls, boys, and teenagers. She also created designs for Sears, Roebuck & Company; Saks Fifth Avenue; Alyssa, a children’s fashion concern; and for her own company, Designs by Helen Lee Inc. As designer and partner at Alyssa, she received a Neiman-Marcus Award in 1958 and the Ethel Traphagen Award in 1970.

She retired in the late 1970s.

Miss Lee was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, and was a direct descendent of General Robert E. Lee. She attended the University of Tennessee before coming to New York, where she studied at the Art Students League and at the Traphagen School of Art. She died on March 13, 1991 in Knoxville; she was 82 years old and had lived in Knoxville since 1981.

Note: Madame de Stael (1766-1817) was a Swiss/French woman of letters, a wealthy adventuress, and a liberal thinker who moved in the highest circles of society and government during the period of the French Revolution and Directory. Her outspoken opposition to Bonaparte resulted in her exile from Paris, after which she spent an interim period studying German culture, keeping company with Goethe, Schiller, and von Schlegel. In her day, DeStael was well known for her aphorisms, such as “To know all is to forgive all.” Despite her intellectual interests, de Stael had a romantic belief in mysticism, and may have frequented the parlor of the tarot card reader Madame Lenormande (17721843), who was considered an oracle by many prominent figures of the period. Lenormande was reportedly consulted by Louis XVIII, Empress Josephine, and Czar Alexander, as well as by revolutionaries Robespierre, St. Just, and Marat. Although imprisoned multiple times, Lenormande managed to evade the guillotine. Given the inscription, it is assumed that this ring may have been presented to the medium as a token of Madame de Stael’s appreciation. $800-1,200 371.

Portrait of Réjane, by Paul Albert Besnard (1849-1934), exhibited in the Paris Salon of 1900

Réjane (1865-1920) was a great actress of the Belle Epoque, and an early international celebrity. She was a star of the popular theater, the queen of French comedy, Vaudeville, and light drama. Her personality and intelligence also inspired the admiration of contemporary artists and intellectuals. She was the ideal Parisienne, a woman of inexplicable charm, elegance, and wit, and a leader of fashion. A muse of the great Parisian couturier Doucet, Réjane was one of the best dressed women in Paris. Aubrey Beardsley sketched her at least six times in his brief career, and no less than three portraits by her friend, the celebrity portraitist Giovanni Boldini, survive. Albert Besnard’s 1900 Salon portrait of Réjane, in a flowing pink gown (above), was considered “epoch making” by contemporary writers, and was “continually surrounded by groups of worshippers and detractors.” Her likeness was also painted by John Singer Sargent, James Jacques Tissot, and Toulouse-Lautrec. Although not a conventional beauty, Réjane inspired her admirers with what one theater critic called a “fascination” that went beyond admiration of her vivacity, animation and lovely voice. Her close friend and counterpart in the field of tragedy, the actress Sarah Bernhardt, considered Réjane a genius.

Marcel Proust was first among the intellectuals who were friends and supporters of Réjane. She was an influence in the character of “La Berma,” the actress in Proust’s novel The Remembrance of Things Past. Proust told a contemporary journalist: “I have a cult for Réjane, the great lady who has worn by turns the twin masks (of comedy and tragedy), who has put all her intelligence and all her heart into her innumerable magnificent roles…” He claimed that the memory of her tragic performances sent him into fits of depression.

For many, Réjane represented the spirit of the age and what was best in French theater. When planning a flamboyant 18th centurythemed costume ball, James Hazen Hyde, the heir to a vast New York fortune, made Réjane the centerpiece of the occasion. The Hyde Ball, heavily attended by high society, was perhaps the most lavish party of Belle Epoque America. Architects redesigned Sherry’s restaurant on Fifth Avenue to resemble the gardens at Versailles, complete with an orangerie, turf, armies of flunkies in period livery, several orchestras, and the dancers of the Metropolitan Opera. Réjane appeared as Marie Antoinette, alighting from a sedan chair, and performed a skit written for the occasion. Hyde toasted her as “The Queen of the French Theater.” The social pages’ reviews of the party were very favorable, even if the revelation of its cost, and the source of those funds, ultimately set off the Wall Street scandal of 1905. See page 64 for a period photograph of the ball.

Among her admirers was Tsar Nicholas II, a person of broad education relative to monarchs of the time. He was fluent in four major European languages and loved French drama. When the Tsar visited Paris in 1896 after the signing of the Franco-Russian Entente, the French government asked Réjane to perform for him at Versailles. In 1897, she traveled to St. Petersburg on the Tsar’s invitation to play at the Imperial Theater, which was usually off-limits to foreign theater companies. The Tsar’s diaries, housed at the Alexander Palace, contain an entry mentioning his enjoyment of her performance. Through emissaries, the Tsar presented her with the ruby and diamond brooch offered as lot 395. This was not the only gift Réjane received from European royals. Queen Isabella of Spain and the King of Portugal both made presents to her; the diamond watch given her by Queen Isabella is offered as lot 401. She was also on friendly terms with the Prince of Wales; when he finally acceded to the throne as King Edward VII, more formal etiquette required that he curb his enthusiasm for Réjane’s acquaintance.

Lots 393, 395-407, 412, 415-417 (brooch), 418-420 were the personal property of the actress, and descended in her family. Lots 394, 408, 409, 410, 411, 413, 414 (ring) belonged to her daughter.

Note: The Delaware Art Museum curators of the 1976 exhibition were of the opinion that this dog collar was “almost certainly designed by C.R. Ashbee.” Around 1900, Ashbee began producing more formal pieces, having taken on a number of trained jewelers and enamellists to execute his designs.

Records show that he designed about a dozen brooches and pendants with the peacock theme in the early 1900s. At the same time, according to Alan Crawford’s work on Ashbee, Guild of Handicraft documentation does not refer to any dog collars.

Also, though Ashby’s jewelry from this period was indeed less austere in color harmony, and more sumptuous in the use of gold wirework and gemstones, these stylistic features can also be generally applied to a number of makers in England at the time. $25,000-35,000
