Highly desirable left and right bank Bordeaux from an impressive Boston cellar. Maintained in ideal climate-controlled conditions and picked up by Skinner staff. 1. Chateau Haut Brion 2000 Pessac Leognan, 1er Cru Classe u: all into neck, some with light bin abrasions to labels “It will always be tempting to compare the 2000 Haut-Brion with the perfect 2000 La Mission Haut-Brion. However, it is not as fat, unctuous, flamboyant, or voluminous as La Mission. Yet, like a great diplomat, it is a wine of intensity, authority, and measured restraint. A supremely elegant offering, its dense ruby/purple color, and burgeoning perfume of scorched earth, liquid minerals, plums, black currants, cherries, lead pencil, and subtle spicy oak are followed by a delicate yet powerfully flavorful, multi-layered, highly nuanced, and extraordinarily pure and seamless wine. There have been so many recent classics from Haut-Brion, it is premature to suggest the 2000 is better than the 1998, 1995, 1990, or 1989, but it is certainly a prodigious wine of dazzling persistence, length, and complexity. A blend of 51% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 7% Cabernet Franc, it should prove to be uncommonly long-lived, even by the standards of Haut-Brion. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2040.” R. Parker, 98 pts., 04/03 6 bottles $3,000-4,500 2. Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1982 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe u: one into neck, three bottom neck, two very top shoulder, small nicks to labels and small nicks to three capsules, two different importers “This is a denser version of the 1990 that stylistically reminds me of what the young 1959 probably tasted like. Still backward with a deep ruby/plum color revealing only a touch of lightening at the edge, the wine offers up an extraordinary nose of caramelized herbs, smoke, cedar, pen ink, black currants, and earth. The gorgeous aromatics are followed by a full-bodied, plump, rich, fleshy wine with low acidity. With 6-8 hours decanting in a closed decanter, it will offer beautiful drinking, but it needs another 5-8 years to reach full maturity. It is capable of lasting 50-60 years. This classic Lafite is not as fat and concentrated as the 1982 Latour, nor as complex or concentrated as the 1982 Mouton Rothschild, but it is a winner all the same.” R. Parker, 97 pts., 06/09 6 bottles $15,000-20,000 3. Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1982 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe u: very top shoulder R. Parker, 97+ pts., 06/09 1 magnum $4,000-6,000 4. Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1986 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe u: all into neck, light bin wear to some labels, light capsule wear, two different importers “The 1986 possesses outstanding richness, a deep color, medium body, a graceful, harmonious texture, and superb length. The penetrating fragrance of cedar, chestnuts, minerals, and rich fruit is a hallmark of this wine. Powerful, dense, rich, and tannic, as well as medium to full-bodied, with awesome extraction of fruit, this Lafite has immense potential. Patience is required. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2030.” R. Parker, 99 pts., 10/94 12 bottles $9,500-14,500
8. Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1996 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe u: all into neck “Tasted three times since bottling, the 1996 Lafite-Rothschild is unquestionably this renowned estate’s greatest wine. As I indicated last year, only 38% of the crop was deemed grand enough to be put into the final blend, which is atypically high in Cabernet Sauvignon (83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 7% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot). This massive wine may be the biggest, largest-scaled Lafite I have ever tasted. It will require many years to come around, so I suspect all of us past the age of fifty might want to give serious consideration as to whether we should be laying away multiple cases of this wine. It is also the first Lafite-Rothschild to be put into a new engraved bottle (designed to prevent fraudulent imitations). The wine exhibits a thick-looking, ruby/purple color, and a knock-out nose of lead pencil, minerals, flowers, and black currant scents. Extremely powerful and full-bodied, with remarkable complexity for such a young wine, this huge Lafite is oozing with extract and richness, yet has managed to preserve its quintessentially elegant personality. This wine is even richer than it was prior to bottling. It should unquestionably last for 40-50 years. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2050. The wine of the vintage?” R. Parker, 100 pts., 04/99 6 bottles $4,500-6,000
9. Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1998 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe u: all into neck “A blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Merlot, this wine represents only 34% of Lafite’s total harvest. In a less than perfect Medoc vintage, it has been spectacular since birth, putting on more weight and flesh over the last year. This opaque purple-colored 1998 is close to perfection. The spectacular nose of lead pencil, smoky, mineral, and black currant fruit soars majestically from the glass. The wine is elegant yet profoundly rich, revealing the essence of Lafite’s character. The tannin is sweet, and the wine is spectacularly layered yet never heavy. The finish is sweet, super-rich, yet impeccably balanced and long (50+ seconds). Anticipated maturity: 2007-2035. “ R. Parker, 98 pts., 04/01 6 bottles $3,000-4,000
10. Chateau La Mission Haut Brion 1982 Pessac Leognan, Cru Classe u: four into neck, two bottom neck “The greatest La Mission Haut Brion made between the 1975 and 1989, the 1982 is, stylistically, a dead-ringer for the ethereal 1959. One of the most massive wines of the vintage, it remains an adolescent in terms of evolution, but it can be drunk with great pleasure if it is decanted 2-3 hours in advance. A thick, unctuouslytextured wine with massive richness as well as abundant notes of black fruits, truffles, creosote, scorched earth, smoke, and camphor, a colossal mouthfeel, a layered texture, incredible depth of fruit and glycerin, and copious, but well-integrated tannins that are largely concealed by the incredible amount of fruit. An old school La Mission, it is a tour de force that should continue to age effortlessly for another 40+ years. A monumental wine!” R. Parker, 100 pts., 06/09 6 bottles $3,500-5,000
11. Chateau Margaux 2000 Pessac Leognan, 1er Cru Classe u: all into neck “Bottled in late November, 2002, the 2000 has turned out to be a colossal example of Chateau Margaux that is tasting even better from bottle than it was from cask. Only 40% of the crop made it into this 2000 Margaux, a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot. Stylistically, it is somewhat of a hybrid between the succulent, opulent, fleshy 1990, and the more delineated, structured, cooler climate-tasting 1996. The 2000 possesses a saturated ruby/purple color to the rim as well as an extraordinarily promising nose of crème de cassis intermixed with white flowers, licorice, and hints of espresso and toasty oak. There is great intensity, compelling purity, a multi-layered, full-bodied palate, and a finish that goes on for nearly 70+ seconds. Bottled naturally, with no filtration, it is a monumental example of the elegance and power that symbolize this extraordinary vineyard. A tour de force in winemaking, many of my colleagues predicted, far earlier than me, that it would be the “wine of the vintage.” It is certainly one of the wines of the vintage, but there is plenty of competition, even at this lofty level of quality. Absolutely awesome! Anticipated maturity: 2012-2050.” R. Parker, 100 pts., 04/03 6 bottles $4,250-6,250
12. Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1982 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe u: all into neck, light bin wear, slight capsule tears to two R. Parker, 100 pts., 06/09 6 bottles $4,250-6,250
13. Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1986 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe u: seven bottom neck or better, four very top shoulder, one top shoulder, some with light bin abrasions, one with light capsule nicking, and light capsule corrosion to some “Deep garnet-black colour. An incredible array of aromas on the nose: blackberry, black cherry, tobacco, espresso, leather, black olive and loam. The palate is absolutely seamless from first impression to finish, effortlessly building layers of complexity in the mouth and leading to a very long, earth and spice finish. I can’t see how this could possibly be improvement so have no alternative but concede perfection. Drink now to 2045+. Tasted March 2009.” Lisa Perotti-Brown for R. Parker, 100 pts., 05/09 12 bottles $6,000-8,000
14. Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1998 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe u: all into neck 6 bottles $1,200-1,800 Petrus - In the renowned village of Pomerol, pack-leader Chateau Petrus is unassumingly modest. Close by the road, lacking some formal alley, it is easy to overlook when contrasted with some architecturally grander neighbors. The robin’s-egg-blue shutters against the limestone creates a hushed and dignified exterior to the chai. Of course the hedonistic treasures crafted within are anything but reserved… On average, only about 4,000 cases are made each vintage. -PhM
15. Chateau Petrus 1959 Pomerol, Cru Exceptionnel u: all top shoulder, light wear to capsules 4 bottles $7,000-10,000 16. Chateau Petrus 1989 Pomerol, Cru Exceptionnel u: one into neck, one bottom neck, different importers “Multi-millionaire collectors will have fun comparing the 1989 and 1990 Petrus. The 1989 has a slightly more saturated color, and seems more tightly knit both aromatically and on the palate. However, this is splitting hairs, as this is another stunningly opulent, rich, fullbodied, amazingly concentrated, exotic, flamboyant Petrus that remains remarkably youthful, and in need of 7-8 more years of bottle age. Additionally, the tannins are slightly more elevated, at least from a tactile impression. However, the 1989 looks to be another 30-year wine, with extraordinary equilibrium between all of its component parts. An amazing effort! Last tasted 11/97” R. Parker, 100 pts., 01/98 2 bottles $3,500-5,000 17. Chateau Petrus 1995 Pomerol, Cru Exceptionnel u: all into neck “It is interesting how this wine continues to evolve. Unquestionably one of the vintage’s superstars, the 1995 Petrus is taking on a personality similar to the extraordinarily backward, muscular 1975. This is not a Petrus that can be approached in its youth (i.e., the perfect duo of 1989 and 1990). The wine exhibits an opaque ruby/purple color, followed by a knock-out nose of pain grille, jammy black fruits, and roasted coffee. On the palate, it possesses teethstaining extract levels, massive body, and rich, sweet black fruits buttressed by powerful, noticeable tannin. A formidably endowed wine with layers of extract, this is a huge, tannic, monstrous-sized Petrus that will require a minimum of 10 years of cellaring. Forget all the nonsense about Merlot producing sweet, soft, ready to drink wines, because low yielding, old Merlot vines made in the way of Petrus and other top Pomerols frequently possess as much aging potential as any great Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine in the world. Look for the 1995 Petrus to last for 50+ years. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2050.” R. Parker, 96 pts., 02/98 6 bottles $4,750-6,500
18. No lot. From the collection of a Gentleman of Massachusetts, stored in a climate-controlled cellar, and picked up by Skinner staff. 19. Beausejour Duffau Lagarrosse 1990 St. Emilion “One of the most singular Bordeaux I have ever tasted, it verges on being port-like, but it pulls back because of the extraordinary minerality and laser-like focus. The wine is massively concentrated, still black/purple-hued to the rim, and offers a nose of incense, blackberries, blueberry liqueur, acacia flowers, and forest floor. It reveals low acidity and high tannins, which are largely concealed by the sheer concentration and lavish glycerin the wine possesses. Aging at a glacial pace, it is approachable, but it will not hit its peak until 2020; it should last for twenty years thereafter.” R. Parker, 100 pts., 06/09 11 bottles $5,000-7,000
20. Chateau Cos d’Estournel 1986 St. Estephe, 2eme Cru Classe u: all bottom neck or better 6 bottles $550-800
21. Chateau Lynch Bages 1985 Pauillac, 5eme Cru Classe 2 bottles $200-300
22. Chateau Lynch Bages 1989 Pauillac, 5eme Cru Classe “Consistently backward and dense, with enormous potential, this admirable wine will not be ready for prime time drinking for another 57 years. The color is not quite as opaque as the 1990’s, but reveals more purple and no lightening at the edge. Hugely concentrated flavors have just begun to offer up a nose of cedar and crème de cassis. Powerful and muscular, with high tannin and superb concentration, this is Lynch Bages at its biggest and most beastly. However, everything is in balance for a stunning evolution. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2030.” R. Parker, 95 pts., 06/00 7 bottles $1,000-1,500
23. Chateau Lynch Bages 1990 Pauillac, 5eme Cru Classe “I have drunk many bottles of this wine in many different locations (Cayman Islands, Shanghai, Bordeaux, Paris, and London), including bottles from my own cellar, and I continue to be amazed by how remarkably consistent it is. One of my favorite Lynch Bages, the 1990 is a more forward, fleshier, and sexier version of the brilliant 1989, and represents a poster bottle of what Lynch Bages is all about. A dense ruby/purple color is followed by a sumptuously sweet bouquet of roasted meats, herbs, sweet crème de cassis fruit, a massive level of glycerin, and silky ripe tannins. It is a hedonistic as well as intellectual turn-on. There is not a hard edge to be found in this delicious 1990, which should last for another 15-20 years in a cold cellar. I would rank the 1990 and 1989 as the two greatest Lynch Bages made in the last 30 years.” R. Parker. 97 pts., 06/09 3 bottles $450-650
24. Chateau Tertre Roteboeuf 1990 St. Emilion 6 bottles $1,500-2,200
25. Chateau Troplong Mondot 1989 St. Emilion R. Parker, 96 pts., 01/98 4 bottles $450-650
26. Chateau de Beaucastel, Chateauneuf du Pape 1989 Southern Rhone R. Parker, 97 pts., 01/03 4 bottles $400-600
27. Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape 1990 Southern Rhone “Two great back to back vintages are the 1990 and 1989. The more developed 1990 boasts an incredible perfume of hickory wood, coffee, smoked meat, Asian spices, black cherries, and blackberries. Lush, opulent, and full-bodied, it is a fully mature, profound Beaucastel that will last another 15-20 years.” R. Parker, 96 pts., 01/03 4 bottles $400-600
28. Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape 1995 (2 bts) 1998 (5 bts) 2000 (4 bts) Southern Rhone 11 bottles $600-850
29. Jaboulet, Hermitage La Chapelle 1990 Northern Rhone u: all 3cm or better, one with possible seepage “The 1990 La Chapelle is the sexy and opulent. I had the 1990 at the Jaboulet tasting, and again out of a double magnum three months ago. On both occasions it was spectacular, clearly meriting a threedigit score. The modern day equivalent of the 1961, it deserves all the attention it has garnered. The color remains an opaque purple, with only a slight pink at the edge. Spectacular aromatics offer up aromas of incense, smoke, blackberry fruit, cassis, barbecue spice, coffee, and a touch of chocolate. As it sits in the glass, additional nuances of pepper and grilled steak emerge. There is extraordinary freshness for such a mammoth wine in addition to abundant tannin, an amazing 60second finish, and a level of glycerin and thick, fleshy texture that have to be tasted to be believed. Despite its youthfulness, the 1990 La Chapelle is lovely to drink, although it will be even better with another 5-6 years of cellaring; it should age for 35-40+ years. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2050” R. Parker, 100 pts., 06/00 6 bottles $1,500-2,000
30. Robert Mondavi Reserve 1985 (2 bts) 1987 (2 bts) 1990 (3 bts) Napa 7 bottles $350-500 More Gems from the pristine climate-controlled Massachusetts Cellar of a True Collector.
Sauternes 30A. Chateau Coutet a Barsac 1959 u: very top, top and high shoulder 3 bottles $500-750 31. Domaine de la Romanee Conti, La Tache 2001 Cote de Nuits “Strikingly extravagant nose of rose petals, oriental spices, pungent tea and leather notes plus ultra elegant pinot fruit. The powerful, chiseled, pure flavors are remarkably detailed, precise and fine with mind bending complexity yet for all the emotional drama of this wine, it remains understated and almost aloof at the moment. The finish is dense, structured and quite firm though there is nary a hard edge to be found and while this too cannot rival the other worldly 1999, 2001 will one day be thought of as a genuinely excellent vintage for La Tâche. In short, aristocratic in every sense. Drink 2018-36.” Burghound, 96 pts., 01/04 1 bottle $1,000-1,400 32. Domaine de la Romanee Conti, La Tache 2004 Cote de Nuits “This too is sublime in its subtlety and grace with ineffably pure aromas and it strikes a balance between the opulence of the RSV and the restraint of the GE with an expressive yet ultra fine nose of rose petals, violets and seductive spice notes that introduce unbelievably refined flavors that seem crafted from silk and lace, culminating in a linear, mouth coating finish that detonates like a bomb and lasts and lasts. At present, this is taut and precise with the lithe muscularity of a world class gymnast yet it is not lean or unduly tight as there is a generosity to the mid-palate that serves to buffer the underlying tannic spine that will permit this to age for decades. This is clearly a great wine that epitomizes the concept of power without weight. Drink 2018+.” Burghound, 95 pts., 01/07 5 bottles $4,250-5,750 33. Domaine de la Romanee Conti, Romanee St. Vivant 2005 Cote de Nuits Banded “This is also very primary and backward as hints of supremely elegant and seductive exceptionally ripe black fruit aromas replete with soy, hoisin, clove and anise nuances merge into wonderfully fine and refined linear and firmly structured flavors that culminate in a precise, pure and driving finish that goes on and on. This is a really impressive effort that offers terrific potential but fans of this wine should note that it is arguably more masculine than it usually is yet at the same time utterly seamless. A ‘wow’ wine that is perhaps the ripest of the DRC ‘05s. A true knockout that is sheer class. Drink 2023+.” Burghound 97 pts., 01/08 6 bottles (owc) $4,250-6,000

Lignier, Clos de la Roche 2006 Cote de Nuits 12 bottles (oc) $1,800-2,400
35. Meo Camuzet, Echezeaux, Les Rouges du Bas 2006 Cote de Nuits 12 bottles (oc) $1,800-2,400 36. Dal Forno Romano Amarone 1998 Valpolicella 6 bottles (oc) $1,500-2,000
37. Dal Forno Romano Amarone 2001 Valpolicella “The 2001 Amarone is on another level entirely. It exudes notable warmth and ripeness, with profound layers of Venezuelan bitter chocolate, herbs, licorice, smoke, dark fruit and toasted oak. Made in an explosive style, this palate-staining Amarone possesses remarkable detail and nuance for such a big wine. It has been phenomenal on the two occasions I have tasted it so far. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2021.” A. Galloni for R. Parker, 97 pts., 10/07 6 bottles (oc) $1,200-1,800 38. Gaja Barbaresco 1997 Piedmont “Gaja’s 1997 Barbaresco is undoubtedly the finest he has yet made. An exquisite effort, it boasts a dense ruby/purple color in addition to an extraordinary nose of black cherry liqueur, smoke, licorice, mineral, and floral aromas. The wine is full-bodied, opulent, and loaded with fruit. Despite its precocious nature, there is abundant tannin, and thus 3-4 years of cellaring is required. It should age effortlessly for 25 years.” R. Parker, 94 pts., 06/01 12 bottles (2 x owc) $1,500-2,000

40. Gaja Sori Tildin 2004 Piedmont “Gaja’s 2004 Sori Tildin floats on the palate. It is the most nuanced of these single-vineyard offerings, with gorgeous notes of tar, smoke, roses, violets, sweet toasted oak and earthiness that emerge from the glass in a counterpoint of sublime elegance and stunning purity. It possesses superb length and elegant, silky tannins to round out the finish. This extraordinary Sori Tildin will require at least a few years of bottle age, but it is destined to be one of the vintage’s legendary wines. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.” A. Galloni for R. Parker, 97 pts., 10/07 12 bottles (2 x owc) $2,700-3,400 41. Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Asili 2004 Piedmont 12 bottles (owc) $1,100-1,600
Port 41A. Cockburn 2000 6 bottles (owc) $150-250 Rare First Growth Highlights from an Extensive Massachusetts Cellar. Maintained in ideal climate-controlled storage. 42. Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1970 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe u: six very top shoulder, two top shoulder, evidence some label dampness (some labels with unadhered corners), light label staining and light bin wear to capsules 8 bottles $1,600-2,800 43. Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1982 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe u: six bottom neck or better, six very top shoulder, light capsule corrosion through four of the capsules in small areas, some label staining, bin soil and tissue adhesion to all labels “This is a denser version of the 1990 that stylistically reminds me of what the young 1959 probably tasted like. 45. Chateau Margaux 1961 Margaux, 1er Cru Classe u: one very top shoulder, one top-high shoulder, one top shoulder, some label wrinkling and staining (evidence prior dampness) one label slipped and affixed with tape with tissue adhesion to label, light capsule corrosion, 3 bottles $1,500-2,000
46. Chateau Margaux 1966 Margaux, 1er Cru Classe u: two top shoulder, one high shoulder, light capsule nicking, corrosion and wrinkling, light bin soil 3 bottles $300-450
47. Chateau Margaux 1971 Margaux, 1er Cru Classe u: four very top shoulder, two top shoulder, light glue striping and capsule oxidation 6 bottles $450-650
48. Chateau Margaux 1982 Margaux, 1er Cru Classe u: five into neck, five bottom neck, two very top shoulder, light label staining and capsule corrosion, some tissue adhesion “Consistently scoring between 98-100, the superb 1982 Margaux may be slightly bigger, bolder, and more masculine than vintages produced over the last 15-20 years. Its dark plum/purple color is followed by notes of melted tar intermixed with sweet cassis and floral underpinnings. Very full-bodied and dense for a Chateau Margaux, with a slight rusticity to the tannins, it boasts blockbuster power, richness, and impressive aromatics. It appears set for another 30-40 years of life” R. Parker, 98 pts., 06/09 12 bottles $6,000-9,000
49. Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1955 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe u: top-high shoulder, slight discoloration to label “The 1955 should be a vintage to buy at auction as I suspect the price is more reasonable than what such acclaimed vintages as 1959 and 1961 fetch. The color reveals no amber or rust, only a slight lightening of intensity at the edge. The nose offers up that explosive Mouton perfume of mint, leather, cassis, black olives, and lead pencil. In the mouth, there is stunning concentration, magnificent extraction of fruit, and plenty of tannin in the long finish. The wine still tastes remarkably young and could easily last another 20-30 years. Amazing!” R. Parker, 97 pts., 10/94 1 bottle $500-700

51. Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1982 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe u: eleven into neck, one bottom neck, some label staining, spotting and damp staining, slight nicks to one capsule “This wine remains one of the legends of Bordeaux. It has thrown off the backward, youthful style that existed during its first 25 years of life, and over the last 4-5 years has developed such secondary nuances as cedar and spice box. The crème de cassis, underlying floral note, full-bodied power, extraordinary purity, multilayered texture, and finish of over a minute are a showcase for what this Chateau accomplished in 1982. The wine is still amazingly youthful, vibrant, and pure. It appears capable of remaining fruity and vibrant in 2082! Thank God it is beginning to budge, as I would like to drink most of my supply before I kick the bucket. This is a great, still youthful wine, and, on occasion, one does understand the hierarchy of Bordeaux chateaux when you see the complexity and brilliance of this firstgrowth. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2050+.” R. Parker, 100 pts., 06/09 12 bottles $8,000-12,000 52. From a Discerning Gentleman of the Northeast, maintained in ideal cellar conditions. 53. Domaine de la Romanee Conti 2000 Assortment Case Cote de Nuits banded prior to inspection Echezeaux (Bottle Nos. 00859, 00860) Grands Echezeaux (Bottle Nos. 00859, 00860) La Tache (Bottle Nos. 00952, 00953, 00954) Richebourg (Bottle Nos. 00829, 00830) Romanee Conti (Bottle No. 00310) Romanee St. Vivant (Bottle Nos. 00919, 00920) La Tache – “Quite deeply colored with the classic La Tâche nose of dried rose petals plus a fantastic array of aromas and spices too numerous to even try to describe that lead to fine, detailed and beautifully textured flavors and terrific length. This is not a La Tâche for the ages as it simply doesn’t have the structure and density to enable it to age for two decades or more but it is remarkably complex and has sneaky finishing intensity. I like this a lot for its superb style, grace and penetrating minerality but those who expect the usual level of power and structure won’t find it in the 2000. This is actually approachable now though it should age for at least two decades simply on the incredible balance that it displays. A terrific effort for the vintage but this clearly does not have the freshness and precision of the 2001.” Burghound, 94 pts., 01/04 Romane Conti – “Brooding, backward and quite a bit more reserved and less expressive with subtly spicy black fruit aromas trimmed by a subtle hint of oak and followed by restrained, pure, gorgeously sappy and harmonious, completely seductive flavors that offer the best delineation of any of these wines. This is extraordinarily fine and detailed with length that lasts and lasts. Though this will undoubtedly add weight and complexity, it will likely always be understated and refined rather than powerful. This is a simply sublime combination of spice, silk and velvet delivered in a perfect sphere of impeccable balance. Incredible by any standard but especially so for the vintage and clearly the best of these 2000s.” Burghound, 95 pts., 01/04 12 bottles (owc) $10,000-15,000

55. Chateau Cheval Blanc 1964 St. Emilion, 1er Grand Cru Classe (A) u: two top shoulder, one top-high shoulder, label staining and bin soil The 1964 is a wonderfully rich, thick, powerful, and concentrated wine that is the most authoritative Cheval Blanc produced since the monumental wines made by this chateau in 1947, 1948, and 1949. Opaque dark ruby, with only some amber, and a powerful, yet restrained bouquet of roasted ripe fruit, cedar, herbs, and gravelly, mineral scents, the wine remains amazingly young and tannic, with layer upon layer of ripe fruit. This is a heavyweight, old-style Cheval Blanc that should be pure nectar for at least another 10-15 years. It continues to evolve at a snail’s pace. Anticipated maturity: now2010.” R. This huge, massively-endowed wine is packed with alcohol, glycerin, and high tannin. There is stupendous extraction of fruit and amazing length. The only criticism is that it is perhaps too big and robust for its own good. Lucky owners of wellstored bottles are advised to cellar it for a few more years. As they say, it’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it! Last tasted 11/95.” R. Parker, 97 pts., 01/98 1 bottle $1,000-1,500

The balance is near perfect and it wasn’t even necessary to drink this to enjoy it as the nose is dazzling in every respect. In short, knee bending. Domaine de la Janasse Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes 2005 Southern Rhone “Absolutely profound, and certainly one of the vintage’s great wines is the 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes. Inky plum/ruby/purple to the rim, with a big, sweet nose of melted licorice, smoked meats, blackberries, cassis, and earth, the wine is deep, powerful, fullbodied, with fabulous concentration, purity, and a multi-dimensional mouthfeel. The finish goes on for close to a minute. Forget this wine for 2-5 years and drink it over the following 25+ years.” R. Parker, 98 pts., 10/07 12 bottles (owc) $900-1,200
107. Domaine de la Janasse Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Vieilles Vignes 2007 Southern Rhone “The perfect 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes (tasted on four separate occasions) is composed of 85% Grenache, 10% Syrah, and the rest Mourvedre and other authorized varietals from 60- to 100+-year-old vines. The wine is aged in both tank (75%) and small oak barrels (25%). Its inky/purple color is followed by a phenomenal nose of spring flowers, crème de cassis, blackberries, boysenberries, licorice, truffles, and spice. Displaying massive body, incredible freshness, laser-like focus from the excellent acids, and a finish that goes on well past a minute, this prodigious Chateauneuf du Pape is the most extraordinary wine yet made at this estate. While accessible (as most 2007s are), ideally it needs 4-5 years of cellaring, and should keep for three decades.” R. Parker, 100 pts., 10/09 12 bottles (owc) $1,500-2,000
108. Domaine du Pegau Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reservee 2003 Southern Rhone “The magical 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reservee brings to mind a richer, more alcoholic version of their 1990. The 2003’s dense plum/purple color is followed by flamboyant aromas and flavors of roasted meats, spicy herbs, pepper, blackberries, and cedar-tinged kirsch-like fruit. Unctuously-textured, with low acidity, high glycerin as well as alcohol (16+%), and a monster finish, it displays enormous concentration, silky tannin, and no hard edges. This remarkable, traditionally-styled Chateauneuf du Pape will be drinkable young, yet should age effortlessly for two decades or more.” R. Parker, (95-98 pts.), 02/06 12 bottles (owc) $900-1,200
109. M. Chapoutier Ermitage Le Pavillon 2005 Northern Rhone “The biggest production cuvee, the 2005 Ermitage Le Pavillon (1,067 cases in this vintage) has a dense purple color, the classic acacia flower, graphite-based, smoky crème de cassis nose with a tremendous intensity and a full-bodied power and richness that is awesome. These are monumental wines, and when you think that this wine, much like most of its siblings, is made from yields of 12-18 hectoliters per hectare, the explanation for its concentration and extraordinary expression of terroir is obvious.” R. 113. Clos des Papes Chateauneuf du Pape 2007 Southern Rhone “Paul Avril was a bigger-than-life vigneron, a visionary, and a great teacher, but Vincent has been in charge for a number of years, and he has rewarded his father with what I believe is the greatest Chateauneuf du Pape made since 1978 and 1990, the 2007. I have not only tasted this wine at the estate, but I purchased it for my cellar, and have now drunk it on three separate occasions out of bottle. It is unquestionably one of the great Chateauneufs of my lifetime, and I suspect it will merit a three digit score after another 3-4 years of cellaring. The blend is generally 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre, and the rest small amounts of Muscardin, Vaccarese, Counoise, and Syrah. It exhibits what is probably the deepest color I have ever seen here, and the finished alcohol is a high (for Clos des Papes) 15.5%. Still slightly restrained because of its recent bottling, but wow, what potential complexity, mind-boggling richness, and compelling flavor profile are apparent. It is a sublime expression of the art of winemaking as evidenced by its dense purple color and big, sweet kiss of kirsch, framboise, blackberries, licorice, roasted herbs, and smoked meat. It hits the palate with a fascinating combination of substance, power, full-bodied authority yet extraordinary freshness, elegance, and precision. Give it 3-4 years of cellaring, and watch it unleash its glory over the next three decades. This is a prodigious wine of great quality from one of the most important reference point estates in Chateauneuf du Pape.” R. Parker, 99+ pts., 10/09 12 bottles (owc) $1,200-1,600

116. Pierre Usseglio & Fils Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve des Deux Freres 2005 Southern Rhone “The 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve des Deux Freres, which is aged in one-, two-, and three-year-old small barrels and larger demimuids, is 100% Grenache in 2005. Dense purple to the rim, the wine displays superb concentration, with notes of creosote, blackberry, coffee, pepper, earth, meats, and smoke. A wine of massive intensity, fabulous purity, and a thick, unctuous texture, the tannins do kick in at the end, so this wine will probably require 5-7 years of bottle age and drink well for close to three decades. It does have the requisite concentration to balance out the wine’s structure.” R. Parker, 95+ pts., 10/07 12 bottles (2 x owc) $900-1,200

The darkest of the three wines, it displays a classic Ginestra nose of menthol, pine, underbrush, spices and minerals. This superbly balanced and refined Barolo offers intense dark cherry fruit, with tremendous substance and persistence. Notes of tar and menthol become more pronounced as the wine sits in the glass. It is perhaps even more impressive than it was when I last tasted it a year ago. A great effort. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2021.” A. Galloni for R. Parker, 98 pts., 10/06 6 bottles $400-600

129. Bruno Giacosa Faletto Barbaresco Riserva Rabaja 2001 Piedmont “The 2001 Barbaresco Riserva Rabaja caps off this magical series of 2001 Barbarescos. It could not be more different from the Asili in its expression. It is a massively endowed, austere Barbaresco that fully captures the essence of the Rabaja vineyard in its explosive, deeply spiced balsamic nose, layers of sweet dark fruit and big, imposing structure. After 30 minutes in the glass, this magical wine is still opening up and my sense is that, even after having tasted this wine three times within the last year, it is still holding back a lot of its ultimate potential. With each successive tasting this wine continues to integrate its new oak (it was aged in a two-year old 55 hectoliter cask). The 2001 is a profound, breathtaking wine, although readers should note that stylistically it is a fairly contemporary wine from this estate. An Azienda Agricola Falletto di Bruno Giacosa bottling. Paolo Scavino Barolo Riserva Rocche dell’Annunziata 2001 Piedmont “The 2001 Barolo Riserva Rocche dell’Annunziata is the perfect way to cap off this strong series. The 2001 presents a multitude of aromas and flavors including roses, minerals, smoke, tar and sweet red fruit in a stunning display of sensual elegance. Today it comes across as open-knit and incredibly expressive. It is hard to say if it will shut down at some point or continue to offer the broad window of drinkability that is the hallmark of many wines from this vineyard. Regardless, it is a great privilege to get a glimpse of this monumental wine at such an early stage. If I hadn’t already tasted the superb 2004 from barrel I would be tempted to call the 2001 the greatest wine I have ever tasted from Enrico Scavino! Ribera del Duero Ribera del Duero - Once home to the Spanish capital, the expansive plain of Old Castile forges on. Rioja Rioja - There is no separating Rioja from its wine; it hums as a region built with knowledge gained from ancestral successes. Slopes of all angles, heights, and soils are dedicated to the vine. Old stone wineries now stand beside modern architectural marvels. All are eager to continue the pace. -LC 161. Artadi Grandes Anadas 2001 Rioja “The prodigious, inky/purple-colored 2001 Grandes Anadas marries elegance with tremendous power and flavor intensity. It represents Spain’s version of Comte de Vogue’s Musigny ... in a top vintage. Aromas of spice box, violets, raspberries, blackberries, plums, cherries, and an undeniable minerality are found in this structured, ripe, phenomenally intense red. The finish exceeds one minute, yet it gives the impression that it is not close to being mature. While it offers plenty of enjoyment now, ideally it should be given 3-4 years of cellaring and consumed over the following two decades.” R. Parker, 98 pts., 04/04 3 bottles $350-500 162. Artadi Pagos Viejos 2001 Rioja R. Parker, 97 pts., 04/04 6 bottles (owc) $425-600 163. Artadi Pagos Viejos 2004 Rioja “The 2004 Pagos Viejos is inky purple with a sublime nose of pain grille, spice box, cherries, raspberries, and wild blue fruits. This is followed by a dense, plush, full-flavored, sexy wine with perfect balance and remarkable elegance for a wine so powerful. Although it can be enjoyed now, it deserves a minimum of a decade of cellaring after which it should drink well through 2047. Kudos to Bodegas Artadi for this tour de force!” Jay Miller for R. 210. Pride Mountain Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2001 Napa “A potentially perfect wine, which is in bottle after having spent 30 or so months in a combination of old and new oak. The practice under Bob Foley is to first keep the wines in neutral wood as the selections are made for the different cuvees and then, once made, move the wines into new oak until bottling. The 2001 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (a 1,300-case blend of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged 27 months in oak) offers gorgeously fresh, lively, but superconcentrated fruit. Inky blue/purple to the rim, with a spectacular nose of crème de cassis, licorice, camphor, and a hint of vanilla, this wine is sensationally rich, has remarkable intensity, a multidimensional palate, and fabulous concentration and depth. It needs another 1-3 years of bottle-age, and should easily and effortlessly evolve for 20 or more years.” R. Parker, 99 pts., 02/05 3 bottles $450-650

A dark purple color is accompanied by a gorgeously powerful nose of pure crème de cassis, pain grille, flowers, licorice, and spice box. Cheval Blanc doesn’t scream out for attention, rather it is passionately pursued by a knowing few. Unquestionalby worthy of “First Growth” stature. In keeping with the Right Bank scene, the beautiful park-like setting feels surprisingly casual. Formal to a point, but not overly so. Cheval Blanc is comprised of cabernet franc and merlot. The vinous equivalent of grace and good taste. -PhM

223. Chateau Cheval Blanc 2000 St. Emilion, 1er Grand Cru Classe “This closed, backward blend of 53% Merlot and 47% Cabernet Franc boasts a saturated purple color along with a reticent but striking bouquet of blackberries, blueberries, truffles, and mocha. In spite of its tightness, aeration reveals scents of licorice, menthol, and saddle leather. Opulent and full-bodied, with low acidity, sweet tannin, and a 60-second finish, it is unquestionably as profound as the 1990 and 1982. I still believe the 2000 has the potential to be the most compelling Cheval Blanc since the mythical 1947 and 1949, but patience is required. It should merit a three digit score in 7-10 years, but it is closed at present. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2030+. Note: The score for this wine was 98 in The Wine Advocate but it is changed to 100 per Mr. Parker as of August, 2006.” R. Parker, 100 pts., 04/03 10 bottles $6,500-9,000

232. Chateau Haut Brion 2000 Pessac Leognan, 1er Cru Classe “It will always be tempting to compare the 2000 Haut-Brion with the perfect 2000 La Mission Haut-Brion. 234. Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1996 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe “Tasted three times since bottling, the 1996 Lafite-Rothschild is unquestionably this renowned estate’s greatest wine. Parker, 100 pts., 04/99 3 bottles $2,400-3,000
235. Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1997 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe 6 bottles $1,400-1,900
236. Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1998 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe “A blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Merlot, this wine represents only 34% of Lafite’s total harvest. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2035.” R. Parker, 98 pts., 04/01 6 bottles $3,000-4,000

239. Chateau Lafite Rothschild 2000 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe “Well, well, well - Lafite Rothschild does it again. Ever since manager Charles Chevalier was transferred from his beloved Sauternes property of Rieussec (also owned by the Rothschilds) to Lafite in 1994, there has been a succession of profound wines to emerge from this noble estate. The 2000 Lafite Rothschild, a blend of 93.3% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6.7% Merlot (only 36% of the crop made the grade) has an opaque ruby/purple color, followed by an extraordinary aromatic expression of liquid minerals/stones interwoven with the tell-tale graphite notes, mulberry, black currants, caramel, and tobacco. In the mouth, it is remarkably light on its feet, but somehow seems to pack intense flavors into layer upon layer of fruit and richness that cascade over the palate. A compelling wine, with extraordinary precision, great intensity, and a seamlessness in spite of what are obviously elevated levels of tannin, this wine was provocatively open and beautiful when tasted in January and February, but I am sure it will soon close down. The finish lasted a whopping 72 seconds! This is utterly fascinating stuff. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2050.” R. Parker, 100 pts., 04/03 2 bottles $3,000-4,000

243. Chateau Latour 2000 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe “There are only 14,000 cases (only 48% of the crop made it into the grand vin) of the 2000, which flirts with perfection. Truly great stuff, it reveals perfect equilibrium, great finesse, yet colossal size, with a thickness and density that rival the brilliant 1996. This saturated black ruby/purple colored wine seems almost discreet on first inspection, but with aeration, notes of vanilla, exceptionally pure, mineral-infused crème de cassis, and earth emerge. Full-bodied and tannic, it should come close to representing perfection. Latour’s 2000 is hard to compare with previous vintages. It obviously does not have the opulence of the 1990 and 1982, yet there is an extraordinary purity, delineation, seamlessness, and freshness to this wine that sets it apart from previous vintages. In any event, it is prodigious, with at least five decades of evolution ahead of it. Anticipated maturity: 20052050.” R. Parker, 98 pts., 04/03 2 bottles $1,400-1,900

250. Chateau Margaux 1996 Margaux, 1er Cru Classe “The 1996 Chateau Margaux, which was bottled in September, 1998, is undoubtedly one of the great classics produced under the Mentzelopoulos regime. In many respects, it is the quintessential Chateau Margaux, as well as the paradigm for this estate, combining measured power, extraordinary elegance, and admirable complexity. I tasted the wine on three separate occasions in January, and in short, it’s a beauty! The color is opaque purple. The wine offers extraordinarily pure notes of blackberries, cassis, pain grille, and flowers, gorgeous sweetness, a seamless personality, and full body, with nothing out of place. The final blend (85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc) contains a high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon. It tastes complete and long, although backward. My instincts suggest this wine will shut down, but at present it is open-knit, tasting like a recently bottled wine. The fruit is exceptionally sweet and pure, and there are layers of flavor in the mouth. I do believe this wine will develop an extraordinary perfume, and possess a high level of richness. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2040.” R. Parker, 99 pts., 04/99 3 bottles $1,200-1,600

254. Chateau Margaux 2000 Margaux, 1er Cru Classe “Bottled in late November, 2002, the 2000 has turned out to be a colossal example of Chateau Margaux that is tasting even better from bottle than it was from cask. Parker, 100 pts., 04/03 2 bottles $1,300-1,800

Fantastically pure with the classic spice box, hoisin and soy nose followed by big, rich, very structured flavors that display notes of earth, leather and tea. The tannins are big, ripe and are completely buffered by the sap with length that is simply phenomenal. This remains completely primary in character and seems not to have budged at all since it was bottled. A genuinely great vintage for La Tâche that is softer in the mouth than the ‘96 Grands Ech and this should improve for another decade and last for 50 years. Very classy juice. Note: while it’s happened only twice, the ‘96 can be intensely vegetal on the nose and not exhibit the purity that the wine is justifiably famous for; however, I have tasted so many outstanding bottles of the ‘96 LT that I view these two examples as outliers. Gaja Barolo 1997 Sori Tilden Sperss Piedmont “A virtually perfect effort is the 1997 Sperss (30,000 bottles), which represents the essence of truffles, earth, and black cherries in its striking aromatics and multidimensional, opulent, full-bodied palate. The acidity seems low because of the huge glycerin levels and prodigious concentration of fruit, but I suspect it is normal in the scheme of oenological measurement. This profound wine requires 3-4 years of cellaring, and should age well for 30-35 years.” R. Parker, 99 pts., 06/01 2 bottles $500-700

Diamond Creek Vineyards was one of the first “cult” wineries in California. Founder Al Brounstein began the winery in 1968 and grabbed acclaim after just a very short tenure. From a gorgeous site – there are informal gardens woven along and through the vineyards – a tiny morsel of three vineyard designated wines are produced. Under extremely rare circumstances, a fourth bottling, “The Lake” is added to the menu. -PhM

A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, with the rest Merlot and Cabernet Franc, this enormously-endowed, profoundly rich wine must be tasted to be believed. Opaque purplecolored, it boasts spectacular, soaring aromatics of vanilla, minerals, coffee, blackberries, licorice, and cassis. In the mouth, layer after layer unfold powerfully yet gently. Acidity, tannin, and alcohol are wellbalanced by the wine’s unreal richness and singular personality. The finish exceeds one minute. Anticipated maturity: 2001-2030.” R. The wine’s saturated, thick, inky, plummy color reveals slight amber at the edge. The magnificent bouquet of jammy black-raspberries, smoke, cloves, tar, and caramel is a knock-out. With dense, unctuous, thick, sweet, rich flavors loaded with glycerin and extract, this massive, full-bodied, stunningly rich, fully mature wine is capable of lasting for another 10-20 years.” R. It has been at its peak for nearly 15 years, yet it shows no signs of losing its fruit and drying out. The color is a dark garnet with orange/amber at the edge. The profound bouquet has the magnetic allure that leaves great Bordeaux unmatched for complexity. Sweet notes of dried fruits, herbs, tobacco, smoke, and roasted meats are followed by an opulently-textured, thick, nearly viscous wine with high glycerin, ripe, jammy fruit, and an intoxicating combination of glycerin, extract, and suppleness. The wine holds in the glass without cracking up, and has a good 40-45 second finish. There is no telling how much longer this 1961 will retain its magic, but it is still a classic. This is an inky/purple, beefy, broad, super-rich Pauillac revealing classic crème de cassis notes intermixed with hints of spring flowers and crushed rocks. Full-bodied with sweet tannin, shocking concentration, and layers of fruit, this irresistible 1982 is still an adolescent in terms of its evolution. Anticipated maturity: now-2035.” R. 339. Chateau Gruaud Larose 1982 St. Julien, 2eme Cru Classe u: all into neck, all with light bin soil “A massive wine that is clearly of first-growth quality in this vintage, the 1982 Gruaud Larose remains a youngster. More Old and New World Gems from the Cellar of a Discriminate Collector. Maintained in a climate-controlled custom-built cellar. 348. Chateau La Mission Haut Brion 2005 Pessac Leognan “There are slightly more than 5,000 cases of the 2005 La MissionHaut-Brion, a blend of 69% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and a touch of Cabernet Franc. While there is little difference between La Mission and Haut-Brion’s terroirs (their vineyards are only separated by a two-lane road), La Mission possesses more fat, texture, and intensity. An enormously endowed wine with huge tannin and structure, the 2005 offers a quintessential Graves bouquet of burning embers, charcoal, blackberries, truffles, black currants, and a meaty character. Reminiscent of the 1989, with more structure as well as a longer window of drinkability, the 2005 may be a modern day, improved version of a vintage such as 1955, which was wellendowed, very tannic, and took a long time to come around. While fabulously full-bodied and unctuous, the 2005 will not provide much charm in its youth. It needs 8-10 years of cellaring, and should age effortlessly for 30-40 years.” R. Parker, 97 pts., 04/08 1 bottle $300-450
349. Chateau Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage a Jacques Perrin 2005 Southern Rhone “The 2005 Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage a Jacques Perrin represents the essence of Beaucastel. A super-concentrated, somewhat over the top style of wine based on 60% Mourvedre, 20% Grenache, and the rest Counoise and Syrah, they only made 4,000 bottles in 2005. The wine has an inky blue/purple color, a more dramatic bouquet than the regular cuvee, consisting of asphalt, crushed pepper, fresh red beef, tar, truffle, and loads of blueberry, blackberry, and cassis. The wine is very full-bodied, extraordinarily powerful, frightfully concentrated, and very tannic and backward. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2050+.” R. Parker, 98+ pts., 10/07 2 bottles $500-700

351. Clarendon Hills Astralis Shiraz 2005 South Australia “At the top of the pyramid is the 2005 Syrah Astralis Vineyard. It is sourced from a vineyard planted in 1920 and is one of the Syrah cuvees in which 100% new oak is utilized (along with Brookman, Hickinbotham, and Piggott Range). It delivers an ethereal bouquet of smoky oak, violets, espresso, black pepper, blueberry, and blackberry liqueur. Densely packed and tightly wound, all it needs is time. The wine is totally harmonious, impeccably balanced, and exceptionally long. When it fully unwinds, even my high rating will appear conservative. Its only competition comes from the likes of Guigal, Chapoutier, Chave, Krankl, and Ringland.” J. Miller for R. Parker, 99 pts., 10/07 6 bottles $900-1,400

353. Chris Ringland (formerly Three Rivers) Shiraz 1998 Southern Australia “The Chris Ringland (formerly known as Three Rivers Shiraz), which is aged 42 months in 100% new French oak, and is rarely racked until bottling, represents an extraordinary expression of Barossa Shiraz. The perfect 1998, made from a single, 88-year-old vineyard cropped at one ton of fruit per acre, soaked up its wood component as if it is not even present. It boasts a sumptuous texture, great delineation, and a huge fragrance of bacon fat, blackberry liqueur, crème de cassis, toast, espresso roast, and hints of chocolate as well as pepper. Full-bodied yet remarkably well-delineated and fresh, this stunning wine is still a baby, but it promises to evolve for two decades or more.” R. Parker, 100 pts., 10/04 1 bottle $500-700
354. Chris Ringland (formerly Three Rivers) Shiraz 2001 Southern Australia 1 bottle (owc) $450-650
355. Harlan Estate 1997 Napa “The 1997 Harlan Estate is one of the greatest Cabernet Sauvignonbased wines I have ever tasted. Parker, 100 pts., 12/00 3 bottles $2,100-3,000
356. Levy and McClellan Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 Napa “Levy and McClellan’s 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon, which spent 26 months in new oak (mostly Taransaud), is developing at an incredibly slow rate. Its opaque ruby/purple color is accompanied by beautiful aromas of roasted coffee, melted chocolate, crème de cassis, burning embers, camphor, and a hint of cedar. On the palate, the wine combines considerable substance, power, and extract with a sense of harmony as well as elegance. Black currant, blackberry, and gamy, meaty notes are also present in this full-bodied effort with an incredibly long finish. The wine is just beginning to shed some tannin and become accessible. It will benefit from another 4-5 years of bottle age, and will easily last for three decades or more.” R. Parker, 95+ pts., 12/08 2 bottles (2 x owc) $400-600
357. Shafer Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select 2002 Napa “One of the world’s most extraordinary Cabernet Sauvignons is the 1,800-2,400-case offering of Shafer’s Hillside Select. It was a treat to re-taste the utterly perfect 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select. A dark purple color is accompanied by a gorgeously powerful nose of pure crème de cassis, pain grille, flowers, licorice, and spice box. Full-bodied with multiple dimensions, superb purity, layers of fruit, and a blockbuster finish, it is an amazing offering. This wine should drink well young yet evolve for 2-3 decades.” R. Parker, 100 pts., 12/06 6 bottles $1,800-2,400
358. Sine Qua Non Raven Series (Syrah) 2006 California “The 2006 Raven Series Syrah, a blend of 93% Syrah, 5% Grenache, and 2% Viognier that spends just under two years in French oak. Offering a dense purple color, gorgeous fruit, and a sweet perfume of graphite, blackberries, blueberries, charcoal, licorice, tar, and new oak, it is a dense, full-bodied, well-endowed, beautifully layered, pure Syrah that should drink well for 10-15 years.” R Parker, 96 pts., 08/09 3 bottles $600-900

A broodingly dense, thick, unctuously textured, inky/plum/garnet/purple color offers up scents of beef blood, steak tartare, cassis, herbs, tobacco, and underbrush. One of the most concentrated wines of the vintage (as well as one of the most concentrated Bordeaux’s I have ever tasted), it is a huge, full-bodied, weighty, rich wine whose tannins are getting silkier and silkier. Chateau Haut Brion 2000 Pessac Leognan, 1er Cru Classe “It will always be tempting to compare the 2000 Haut-Brion with the perfect 2000 La Mission Haut-Brion. Parker, 98 pts., 04/03 6 bottles $3,000-4,500 370. Chateau Lafite Rothschild 2000 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe R. Parker, 100 pts., 04/03 6 bottles $9,000-12,000 La Mission lies just across the road from Haut Brion. The descendents of American banker Clarence Dillon now run both properties (previously owning just Haut Brion). Given this fact, there exists an inevitable fixation to contrast the properties. Still, the arrangement between them is not really one of sibling rivalry at all. What is striking is how these wine estates and adjacent vineyards exist so close to the city center of Bordeaux (4 miles). Mercifully the unusually deep gravel soils so ideal for viticulture were never paved over! -PhM 371. La Mission Haut Brion 2000 Pessac Leognan, Cru Classe “A superstar of this great vintage, the 2000 La Mission Haut-Brion is as profound as the 1989, 1982, and 1975. It is more structured and tannic than the 1989, more civilized and refined, but not as thick as the 1982, and sweeter as well as purer than the 1975. The 2000 is neither flamboyant nor accessible, but what upside potential it possesses! In time, one might have to return to the prodigious duo of 1959 and 1961 to find a La Mission with this much potential. While still tight from bottling, its inky purple color is accompanied by extravagantly sweet aromas of blackberries, blueberries, toast, scorched earth, coffee, asphalt, graphite, and smoke. Super-intense and unctuously-textured, with a sumptuous mid-palate and finish, this is an explosively rich, layered effort that possesses everything I could ever want from a terroir that has given me as much hedonistic and intellectual pleasure as any other wine in the world. It is an amazing achievement for administrator Jean-Bernard Delmas, his son, JeanPhillipe, and the entire winemaking team. The phenomenal aftertaste goes on for over a minute. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2045.” R. Parker, 100 pts., 04/03 6 bottles $2,700-4,000

374. Chateau Leoville Barton 2003 St. Julien, 2eme Cru Classe “One cannot admire enough proprietor Anthony Barton and his classic, potentially long-lived wines that are models of power, elegance, and longevity – in short, these wines symbolize what makes Bordeaux so world-renowned! Probably capable of rivaling the 2000, the uncompromisingly made, formidably powerful, masculine, and highly extracted 2003 has an inky purple color to the rim, a big, deep personality with a tight but promising nose of forest floor, crème de cassis, smoke, charcoal, licorice, and perhaps even truffle. It is layered, rich, and set for an exceptionally long life, but don’t expect to get a lot of joy even in this somewhat overtly styled vintage for at least another 7-8 years. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2030+.” R. Parker, 95+ pts., 04/06 12 bottles (owc) $900-1,200

383. Harlan Estate, The Maiden 2004 Napa “I was blown away by the 2004 The Maiden, which out of bottle is even better than it was from barrel. This wine exhibits a rather flamboyant scorched earth, lead pencil, incense, licorice, and blackberry and cassis-scented nose and flavors. The wine has superb concentration and is opulent, fleshy, and very much in keeping with the style of the vintage. Despite its accessibility, I suspect this wine will drink well for at least two decades.” R. Parker, 95 pts., 12/07 3 bottles (owc) $300-450

415. Chateau Leoville Las Cases 1982 St. Julien, 2eme Cru Classe u: both bottom neck “I have had perfect bottles of this cuvee, but, perplexingly, the bottles from my cellar tend to be broodingly backward and require plenty of coaxing. This huge wine is, in many ways, just as massive as Leoville Barton, but it possesses a greater degree of elegance as well as unreal concentration. Classic lead pencil, cassis, kirsch, cedar, and spice characteristics are abundant in both the nose and full-bodied flavors. The tannins are still there, and, at least from my cellar, this 1982 does not appear to have changed much in the last 10-12 years. One wonders how much patience admirers of this brilliant St.-Julien will continue to exhibit. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2050” R. Parker, 95+ pts., 06/09 2 bottles $600-900

417. Chateau Lynch Bages 1982 Pauillac, 5eme Cru Classe “One of the most drinkable, complex, and tasty 1982s of the northern Medoc, this wine is beginning to reach its plateau of full maturity. Still a dense ruby/purple color with some lightening at the edge, it offers up classic aromas of cedar wood, fruitcake, tobacco leaf, and crème de cassis. This full-bodied, opulent, fleshy, sexy Pauillac can be drunk now with great pleasure and complexity, or cellared for another 10-15 years” R. Parker, 94 pts., 06/09 8 bottles $1,600-2,000

Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1982 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe u: four bottom neck, three very top shoulder, two top shoulder, small capsule nick to one and slight label discoloration This wine remains one of the legends of Bordeaux. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2050+” R. Parker, 100 pts., 06/09 9 bottles $6,000-9,000 424. The wine is at its apogee, with an extraordinary, sweet, complex nose with aromas of flowers, cassis, toast, and minerals. It is intensely concentrated, offering a cascade of lavishly ripe, full-bodied, opulent fruit, soft tannins, and a voluptuous finish. This is a decadent Palmer, unparalleled since in quality with the exception of 1983 and 1989.” R. Parker, 99 pts., 10/94 3 bottles 1 demi bottle $1,200-1,800

Pichon Longueville - The visually stunning Pichon Longueville could serve as the post-card-image one conjures up when imaging a chateau in France. A Second Growth for certain, but given Pichon’s lofty neighbors, their competitive juices must be constantly flowing. An intriguing aspect with many these older, established estates is how rigorously they embrace modernity – one could be forgiven for erroneously assuming that time has stopped inside the front door. In Pichon’s case, it was the first property to attain the ISO 14001 standard in the entire Bordeaux region! -PhM

473A. Torbreck Run Rig 2002 Australia “The 2002 Run Rig (97% Shiraz and 3% Viognier aged in 100% new French oak) represents the essence of old vine Barossa fruit. Extraordinarily opulent and rich, but playing it closer to the vest than the 2001, it gets my nod as one of the most remarkable wines made in either the Southern or Northern Hemisphere. An inky/purple color is accompanied by a sumptuous bouquet of apricots, honeysuckle, black raspberries, blackberries, licorice, and a hint of roasted meats. The wood has been soaked up by the wine‚s extraordinary concentration. Fashioned from four sectors of Barossa (Maranaga, Koonunga Hill, Moppa, and Greenock), it spent 30 months in primarily new oak, and was bottled without fining or filtration. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2020+.” R. Parker, 99 pts., 10/05 12 bottles $1,200-1,800

480. Harlan Estate 2005 Napa “Not unexpectedly, the 2005 Harlan Estate performed slightly better than it did last year. As these wines often do, it continues to put on weight as it is bottled very late by Napa standards, and there is no fining or filtration. The 2005 exhibits a gorgeous thick-looking, ruby/purple color in addition to a beautiful nose of burning embers interwoven with crème de cassis, roasted meats, sweet black truffles, and spring flowers. A hint of lead pencil shavings also emerges from this cuvee, which seems to want to be both a Pauillac and a ripe vintage of La Mission Haut Brion. Full-bodied, dense, pure, and revealing sweeter tannin than I remember, it can be drunk now, but it will no doubt display even greater complexity in 10, 20, and 30 years.” R. Ullage (Level of Wine) Illustration and Interpretations For Bordeaux, Port, and other shouldered bottles n. bn. vts. ts. hs. ms. lms. s.
ullage is into neck bottom neck very top shoulder top shoulder; usual level for Bordeaux older than 15 yrs high shoulder; usual cork reduction, often found in Bordeaux over 20 yrs, low risk mid shoulder; variation likely as indicates cork deterioration low mid shoulder; some risks, reflected in estimates shoulder; risky, reflected in estimates into neck bottom neck very top shoulder top shoulder high shoulder mid shoulder low mid shoulder shoulder
Ullage of wines of vintages fifteen years and younger may be assumed to be of bottom neck or better unless otherwise noted. Similarly, regarding older vintages, lack of notation indicates acceptable and appropriate ullage, clear label and sound cork; potential bidders must be prepared for reasonable variations in ullage in all vintages older than 15 years. Bidders with specific condition questions should contact the Fine Wines department. Conditions generally not noted on group lots. Bordeaux wines are catalogued referencing the 1855 classification. Chateau Petrus cataloguing reflects the practice of granting it 1er Cru Classe and other notable Pomerol Chateaux are designated Cru Classe. All Bordeaux wines may assume to be chateau bottled unless otherwise stated. It is standard practice for Skinner/Lower Falls Wine to open all original wooden cases (owc) for visual inspection. The opening of banded cases will be determined on an individual basis. For Burgundy, German wines and all other more gradually slope-shouldered bottles, the ullage measurement is taken in centimeters from cork base, e.g. 3cm, 5cm, 7cm. Bottle Sizes bottle (750 ml) magnum (2xbt) marie jeanne (3xbt) double magnum (4xbt)
jeroboam (4xbt); Burgundy, Champagne jeroboam (6xbt); Bordeaux imperiale (8xbt); Bordeaux methuselah (8xbt); Burgundy
half bottle (hbt) split (1/4 bottle) Champagne
Buyers’ Caution: Levels are as when catalogued; ullage may change due to cork deterioration; other bottle conditions may occur during storage and shipment. Risk of ullage variation and cork deterioration and/or failure is assumed by the buyer at time of sale and no sale cancellations, price negotiations, or bottle substitutions will be undertaken by either Skinner or Lower Falls Wine. Similarly, no substitutions will be made due to inaccurate descriptions. Flights of Lots: Are of the same type, vintage and bottle count and follow one after another numerically, though ullage and bottle conditions may vary. The auctioneer may exercise discretion to offer, in consecutive lot order and at that same price, the following lots in the flight to the first successful bidder of that flight. Subsequently, those lots not purchased will be offered anew and so on. Absentee bids placed on any lot in a flight will be applied to the next lot in the flight (if unsuccessful) until the flight concludes. Environmental Note: It has only been in the last 15-20 years that the wine industry has moved away from using lead capsules to cover the cork and neck of a bottle. When opening an older wine, if you do have a lead capsule, give consideration as to how you dispose of it.
