Provenance Gene Krupa (1909-1973) Universally acknowledged as the first “superstar” drummer, Gene Krupa was in many ways the most significant drummer of the half-century of modern music spanning the style of New Orleans jazz to Swing and Bebop. He made history throughout his 50-year career with huge contributions to the drummer’s role in music and to the design of modern drums and cymbals. From an early association with Chicago musicians including Bix Beiderbecke, Jimmy McPartland, and Eddie Condon, he went on to achieve universal fame in the bands of Benny Goodman and with his own orchestra and small groups. His immortal performance in the 1938 Benny Goodman concert at Carnegie Hall remains one of the most widely recognized and iconic classics of jazz. After becoming perhaps the world’s most famous Swing drummer, his music continued to progress; his Bebop collaborations with arranger Gerry Mulligan and trumpeter Roy “Little Jazz” Eldridge are considered timeless masterpieces. Krupa’s lifelong collaboration with Zildjian Cymbals and Slingerland Drums contributed to the evolution of the modern drum set, and his exuberant showmanship and masterful style helped to spread the popularity of American music.
Harry Fleisher (1907-c. 1995) A mechanical engineer, teacher, and inventor, Harry Fleisher began a second career making bows in 1946. He studied many historical models of French bows, and became associated with many of New York’s finest musicians and fellow bowmakers. Lots 204-216 are from his personal collection of wood selected from cargo arriving directly from Brazil into the Port of Brooklyn during the 1950s and 1960s.
Clint Black (b. February 4, 1962) Singer and songwriter Clint Black has enjoyed an ever-growing reputation since 1989 as a major figure in American music, garnering more than 20 million record sales worldwide. His awards include Male Vocalist of the Year from the CMA and Favorite New Male Artist from the American Music Awards.

Gene Krupa had a lifelong association with the Slingerland Drum Company and Avedis Zildjian. This was the last kit that he used from c. 1962 until 1972, when he presented the kit to the school of St. Paul the Apostle in Yonkers, New York, where he was a parishioner and where his children had attended school. The set includes a 20-inch floor tom-tom that was custom built for him by the Slingerland Company, and a Slingerland “Centennial” rack tom given to him in 1971. Mr. Krupa was also presented many cymbals by Avedis Zildjian, with whom he collaborated on the design of modern hi-hat, crash, and “swish” cymbals. All were handstamped with his initials by the Zildjian family. Gene Krupa playing with his Big Band, c. 1938.
