24 David Hockney (British, b. 1937) Pembroke Studio Interior, 1984, edition of 70 plus proofs, printed and published by Tyler Graphics, Bedford Village, New York, 1985 (Tyler, 277:DH64). Signed and dated “David Hockney 84” in pencil l.r., numbered “65/70” in pencil l.l., publisher’s dry stamp l.r., publisher’s label affixed to the backing. Color lithograph on paper, sheet size 41 x 49 3/4 in. (104.2 x 126.3 cm), in the original frame handpainted by the artist. Condition: Deckled edges, rippling, floated within the frame, not examined out of frame.
N.B. Hockney is considered one of Britain’s most dominant Pop artists, although it is a categorization that he denies. He is a virtual jack-of-all-trades, embracing new media— from acrylic paint to PhotoShop—and working as a painter, printmaker, photographer, and even set designer. Pembroke Studio Interior employs simple lines and a narrow color palette dominated by primaries. This, in conjunction with a special experience that is both an homage to Picasso and bears a close kinship with the results of his own photocollage work, creates a Pop sensibility. $15,000-25,000

N.B. This multiple was created by Koons to reference his colossal work Puppy of 1992 that sits at attention at the entrance to the Guggenheim Museum Bilboa. The Guggenheim Puppy depicts a West Highland terrier covered in flowers, reminiscent of both an 18th century formal garden and a parade float. The Puppy presented here isn’t covered with flowers, but it is a vase meant to hold them. $8,000-12,000

N.B. Lichtenstein’s Cathedral series was one of two created in homage to French Impressionist Claude Monet. The other was his Haystack series, also of 1969. Like Monet, Lichtenstein depicts the façade of Rouen Cathedral. Unlike Monet, each of Lichtenstein’s prints uses precisely the same image printed in different colorways. Both artists ultimately create a series of façades depicted at different times of day. Where Monet uses his ubiquitous loose Impressionistic brush strokes, Lichtenstein replaces these with his ubiquitous Ben-Day dots. $6,000-8,000

38 Claes Oldenburg (American, b. 1929) Profile Airflow, 1969, edition of 75 plus proofs, published by Gemini G.E.L., Los Angeles (Axsom & Platzker, 59). Signed and dated “Oldenburg 69” in pencil l.r., titled in pencil l.c., numbered “60/75” in pencil l.l. Cast green polyurethane relief over lithograph in black and gray on paper, image/sheet size 32 3/4 x 65 in. (83.2 x 165.1 cm), in the artist’s original aluminum frame. Condition: Surface grime, dust to interstices. Provenance: A private Massachusetts collection.
N.B. Oldenburg’s approach to Pop Art was to choose everyday—often mundane— objects like typewriter erasers, clothes pins, and screws. These were often blown up to colossal proportions. In Profile Airflow he starts with a familiar object: a Chrysler Airflow which was first produced in 1934, and featured a new, streamlined design. Here Oldenburg scales the object down. The green polyurethane overlay accentuates the aerodynamic form of the car and references its mass production. Beneath this, the lithograph adds shadows to the vehicle’s sleek contours. The grid alludes to Oldenburg’s rescaling of the car while reminding us of the technical plans that would be used in the car’s modern manufacturing. $15,000-20,000

N.B. Florence Henri studied art in Rome, Berlin, and Paris before arriving in 1927 at the Bauhaus in Dessau where she learned the basic technical and visual principles of photography from László Moholy-Nagy and Lucia Moholy. Henri is best known for her self-portraits, many of which employ mirrors to evocatively manipulate reflections and spatial relationships. In 1931, she adopted the technique of collage which became an effective substitute for the mirror in creating fragmented spaces and perspectival and planar incongruities. She then rephotographed the resulting compositions. Henri’s dream-like reimaginings of architectural and sculptural ruins in the ancient city of Rome are suffused with a deep longing for the past. $5,000-7,000

Ansel Adams encouraged Porter to work with a large-format camera, and when his brother, painter Fairfield Porter, introduced him to Alfred Stieglitz, he shifted careers. While he was successful with his black and white work in the 1930s, it was the dye transfer work he began in the 1940s that was pioneering. N.B. James Casebere’s photographic work has established him at the forefront of artists experimenting with constructed imagery. He was associated with the “Pictures Generation” of post-modern artists who emerged in the 1980s, which included Cindy Sherman, Robert Longo, Richard Prince, and others. Casebere creates two-dimensional representations of three-dimensional models that he builds in his studio and photographs using evocative lighting and suggestive angles to create worlds that blur fact and fiction. He is best known for his focus on institutional buildings, and, as evidenced in this Home and Prison pair of lithographs, his exploration of the fraught relationship between social structure and social control. $2,000-3,000
