The William C. Rives Collection: Lots 42-60, 95, 158 William C. (Bill) Rives is a career teacher. He has taught in secondary schools in the United States, Athens, London, Paris, and Singapore. Rives lived in Southeast Asia for twenty-two years, 1987–2009, and taught history, art history, psychology, and English at the Singapore American School, also acting as chairman of the History and Social Sciences Department. At the National Museum of Singapore, he lectured on “The History of India and Its Influence on Religion in Southeast Asia.” From the crossroads of Singapore, Bill traveled throughout Southeast Asia and the world beyond. Born in Charlottesville, Virginia, Rives is a graduate of Portsmouth Abbey School, Williams College, and Wesleyan University. His great-grandfather was Dr. Thomas Walker, who explored and named the Cumberland Gap, founded the town of Charlottesville, and served as the legal guardian of Thomas Jefferson; his grandfather was his namesake, William Cabell Rives, a United States Senator and Ambassador to France. Later generations of the Rives family have also been involved in the foreign service. During his two decades in Singapore, Rives followed the annual Christie’s and Sotheby’s auctions and came to love the Southeast Asian art genre, with its blend of Eastern and Western influences. He is pleased to offer this collection through Skinner.

The reserve is a confidential minimum price agreed upon by the consignor and Skinner, Inc. below which the lot will not be sold. In most cases, the reserve will be set below the estimated range, but in no case will it exceed the estimates listed. A representative of Skinner, Inc. will execute such reserves by bidding for the consignor. In any event and whether or not a lot is subject to a reserve, the auctioneer may reject any bid or raise not commensurate with the value of such lot. 2.
